Music/songs that speak to your asexual soul?

Recommended Posts

I'd say for me the song that speaks closest to my asexual soul is Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill". It also speaks to me, because I'm always seeking to understand others by putting myself in their shoes. Whenever I find a partner, I want to play this song for whoever it is.❤️

Love Exists by Amy Lee

As a gal who loves romance without sex, this song speaks to me. 😭

Spoiler
It can be born anywhere
In the last place you'd expect
In a way you'd never dream
It can grow from nothing
And blossom in a second
A single glance is all it takes
To get inside you

Invading every thought
And every beat of your heart
Love can make you scream
And it can leave you speechless
Love has a thousand stems
But only one flower

It can grow alone 'til it turns to dust
It can tear your world apart or bind to you forever
It can grow in darkness, make its own light
Turn a curse into a kiss
Change the meaning of your world

Love makes no sense, love has no name
Love drowns you in tears and it sets your heart on fire
Love has no fear, love has no reason
So infinitely vast and we're standing at the edge
Take my hand, erase the past forever
My love is you, my love you are

Love makes no sense, love has no name
Love is never wrong and never needs a reason
I'm drowning in my tears but my heart's on fire

It can make you better, it can change you slowly
And give you everything you want, ask for nothing in return
In the blink of an eye, the hint of a smile
In the way you say goodbye, and everytime you find me

Love makes no sense, love has no name
Love drops you in tears and it sets your heart on fire
Love has no fear, love has no reason

Love makes no sense, love has no name
Love drowns you in tears and it sets your heart on fire
Love has no fear, love has no reason

My love is you, my love you are
My love is you, my love you are

Like so much of classic soul/R&B, Anita Baker makes use of romantic tropes nearly exclusively in all her songs. But then all of a sudden she throws this in as the final track on her "Compositions" album. I always think of this song as offering really wise advice, even if you are not ace or aro. Also brilliant vocals!

for me personally, music is a huge comfort and probably one of my favourite ways to relate to others and also im just lacking when it comes to new music currently.

sooo if you know any songs that are pretty relatable from an asexual standpoint, id love to know about them :]

right now one of my favourites would be "its only sex" by car seat headrest

Hello by Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette is one I recommend.

For Me by Dearlie is a straight up ace song, not just one with ace vibes.

I'd recommend an ace musician named "Arctica the Fox"

Personally for the ace vibes I'd recommend "Ain't the Kind of Loving I Do"

Enjoy the music :]

I don't mind love songs but I like lyrics about different things a bit more. Also, when I'm in good mood I prefer fast, joyful songs but when I'm upset or sad I like to listen to slower, sad/expressive songs about big troubles in life - it always comforts me somehow. For example "Red army blues" makes me feel like my problems are actually nothing, compared to what is described in the lyrics.

Off-topic question: how do you guys put youtube videos into posts?

I know some people might have differing opinions on this one, but to me- personally, "Take Off Ur Pants" by Indigo de Souza gives me a feeling of two friends or even romantic/platonic partners that don't want to be sexually active with each other, but feel like they have to because it's "the norm."

The lyrics talk about how everyone else does it, so when will they? The singer doesn't sound like she wants to, but more of wanting to feel normal in an irregular relationship. I'm pretty sure that's not what the song is about though haha. But lyrics and music is subjective just as any other art form. Different people see different means in different things. This is a tricky one, but that's just what I see in the song.

fun fact, I'm headed to see her in concert next week. I'm super excited.

highlighted lyrics:

"When am I gonna start being cool
Like everybody else is, everybody else is"

"Now that everyone's gone I can tell you the truth
I don't love you, I like you
Now that everyone's gone, I can tell you it hurts
Honey I am just like you"

"When am I gonna follow through with my plans
Like everybody else does, everybody else does"

"When are you gonna take off ur pants
Like everybody else does, everybody else does"

"All I want" - by Sarah Blasko

I don't want another lover So don't keep holding out your hands There's no room beside me I'm not looking for romance Say I'll be here, I'll be here But there's no way you'd understand

All I want All I want All I want When I don't even know myself

I don't want another partner So don't try and break the spell I can't even understand me So don't think that you can help When I say things and see things That's no way on earth to tell

What I want What I want What I want 'Cos I don't even know myself

No-one wants to be lonely But what am I to do? I'm just trying to be honest I don't want to hurt you too When I'll be there, I'll be there I know I sound confused

But all I want All I want All I want All I want All I want See, all I want All I want Is to one day come to know myself

What is everyone’s favorite ace spec songs/music? I love music but so so much of it is about love, relationships, dating and sex and it can be hard to find relatable musical content. So what is your favorite ace related music?

What's the obsession with being "ace-related"? Is it not enough to be non-sex-related? Why would I listen to The I Don't Care For Sex Song when I could be listening to Neil Cicierega enthusiastically describe the plot of Jaws over a catchy beat?

Non sexual is included when I say ace related I meant it in a very broad sense as in songs that can resonate with you because of your ace-ness which would include things like non sexual songs sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Never been in love by Will Jay is a very aroace song I enjoy.

And yes, songs not about relationships are great, but sometimes I do want a specifically ace song.

She's just dancing by David Wilcox is a nice, calm tune about a girl who's just dancing to the band and not interested.

I know there have been threads discussing ace music before... Search for those?

For completely unrelated songs, here's a smattering of random ones: one of the millions by XTC, My Medea by Vienna Teng is a creepy and gorgeous lullaby, blue lips by Regina spektor, bunkers by the vapors, hang on little tomato by pink martini, Saturday by the judybats, albatross by Judy Collins is lovely and a little mournful, look sharp by Joe Jackson, ordinary day by great big sea, may be a price to pay by the Alan Parsons project, no roots by Alice Merton, spinning wheel by blood sweat and tears, skeleton key by dessa...

There are more, but I'll leave your with those. They are all very, very different...

And for ace songs in particular, I recommend searching the forum for one of the previous discussions

I would love to recommend a certain song, but, most people would not say it is acespec, so I can't. However, I can recommend this song, Bones In The Ocean, by the longest Johns.

everywhere and nowhere

I wanted to share a longer piece I like a lot, and I thought that asexuals could even treat parts of it as an insider joke (although I don't think the musicians were asexual) because the lyrics reference amoebas. ;)

It's "A Very Cellular Song" by the Incredible String Band. Actually, I don't like them that much despite being a connaiseuse of 1960s psychedelic music. "I like my psychedelia well-fried" ;) and slightly weird folk - which is the case for most of their songs - just doesn't strike that feeling in me. But then, "A Very Cellular Song" rises to new levels of weirdness. In fact, I don't even like using this word in this context because it's also a spiritual song. Supposedly influenced by an LSD trip... and as a connaiseuse of this kind of music and a psychonaut (although as a belated psychonaut - 18 years and 10 days passed between "these words which produce visions" and my first trip - I was listening to such music long before actually trying psychedelic drugs) I can say that "I knew it!".

Lyrics below - I personally always find it hard to fully comprehend a sung text, not only in English.

Quote
Winter was cold and the clothing was thin,
But the gentle shepherd calls the tune.
Oh, dear mother what shall I do?
First please your eyes and then your ears, Jenny,
Exchanging love tokens, say goodnight.

Lay down, my dear sister,
Won't you lay and take your rest?
Won't you lay your head upon your saviour's breast?
And I love you but Jesus loves you the best,
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight,
And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
One of these mornings bright and early and fine,
Goodnight, goodnight.
Not a cricket, not a spirit going to shout me on,
Goodnight, goodnight.
I go walking in the valley of the shadow of death,
Goodnight, goodnight.
And his rod and his staff shall comfort me,
Goodnight, goodnight.
Oh John, the wine, he saw the sign,
Goodnight, goodnight.
Oh John, say, I seen a number of signs,
Goodnight, goodnight.
Tell A for the ark, that wonderful boat,
Goodnight, goodnight.
You know they built it on the land getting water to float,
Goodnight, goodnight.
Tell B for the beast at the ending of the wood,
Goodnight, goodnight.
You know it ate all the children when they wouldn't be good,
Goodnight, goodnight.
I remember quite well, I remember quite well,
Goodnight, goodnight.
I was walking in Jerusalem just like John,
Goodnight, goodnight, goodnight.
Goodnight, goodnight.
Goodnight, goodnight.
Goodnight, goodnight.

Who would lose and who would bruise,
Or who would live quite prettily?
And who would love what comes along,
And fill the air with joyous song?

Who would go and who would come,
Or who would simply linger?
And who would hide behind your chair,
And steal your crystallised ginger?

Nebulous nearnesses cry to me.
At this timeless moment, someone dear to me
Wants me near, makes me high,
I can hear vibrations fly.
Through mangoes, pomegranates and planes,
All the same.
When it reaches me and teaches me
To sigh.

Who would mouse and who would lion,
Or who would be the tamer?
And who would hear directions clear
From the unnameable namer?

Who would skip and who would plod,
Or who would lie quite stilly?
And who would ride backwards on a giraffe
Stopping every so often to laugh?

Amoebas are very small.

Oh ah ee oo, there's absolutely no strife,
Living the timeless life.
I don't need a wife,
Living the timeless life.
If I need a friend I just give a wriggle,
Split right down the middle.
And when I look there's two of me,
Both as handsome as can be.
Oh here we go slithering, here we go slithering and squelching on.
Oh here we go slithering, here we go slithering and squelching on.
Oh ah ee oo, there's absolutely no strife,
Living the timeless life.

Black hair, brown hair, feather and scale,
Seed and stamen and all unnamed lives that live.
Turn your quivering nerves in my direction,
Turn your quivering nerves in my direction,
Turn your quivering nerves in my direction,
Feel the energy projection of my cells,
Wishes you well.

May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide you all the way on.

I just noticed that nobody seems to have answered the question.

It's actually very easy: just copy the website URL, paste it here and the forum script automatically turns into an embedded video.

But, I'm not a guy... ;) "You folks", "you people", "everyone" is better.

This one has great disamorous  vibes

Especially love this verse:

"Abandon all your stupid dreams
About the girl I could have been, my dear
'Cause in the night I know you burn with feelings
I cannot return, my dear
Oh, my dear"
