Banning Policy First Draft

Yeah, but telling a troll they aren't wanted doesn't do anything but encourage them. I'm sure they *did* know they weren't wanted and got great joy from watching us get huffy.

Cate – I am in no way accusing you or the other AVEN elders of McCarthyism and I’m Frigid’s banishment was definitely long over due. However, in spite of all of Frigid’s condescending and disturbing posts they at least attempted to be cordial (probably not a good word). I don’t know what started this but I don’t recall ever reading anything that Frigid wrote that was outright vulgar or dangerous. Honestly I hear worse every time I take the city bus and I was surprised that Frigid was banned especially since I have read much more offensive threads and like I said before I think that we had made it clear to Frigid that they were not wanted here. No sense in kicking a dead horse.

Hmm. In my opinion, Frigid was outright vulgar in those posts about overweight. But I agree that most of her postings were mainly ridiculous.

However, I think that she was dangerous because she was such a super-diligent poster.

It would have helped a lot, if her posting had been restricted only to the Hotbox. There she would have become only a village idiot.

But she WAS a village idiot  didn't matter where she posted LOL

Anyway, yes a person can see/hear worse while riding a bus or watching a movie but this is neither bus nor movie and it's 100% up to the mods as far as the final ban goes. This is not a government service board, it is a message board. The mods don't HAVE to give warnings at all. Yes, people "have a right" to say and feel things but the mods and DJ "have a right" to tell them to say and feel it somewhere else. Mods also have the "right" and ability to lock threads. I think that's very useful, too but mostly I just think if everyone stays out of the thread, it needn't be locked.

Dealing with trolls, I think the best thing is for people to just not talk to them, like the bully in the playground. It starves them out and they vanish. Once a thread gets to be a big shit-slinging episode, I opt out of it. Same way as if it gets to be too much sex/masturbation talk. I'm not going to bitch about it because ... like Hawkeye - I can go in, I can go out, in, out, in, out.

My feeling is, anytime a person is creating chaos and disruption, and people insist on feeding it by arguing and getting upset, it causes a negativity on the boards that we try so hard to avoid. This is a *safe* place for us to gather and share and have fun in - when it does not feel safe to post (because a poster is apprehensive about the reception their post might receive, based on the nastiness they've seen in certain threads), it's time to take action to return the board to the welcoming and supportive atmosphere most of us love.

I'm here because I love this site. I know I can talk about anything that's bothering me and get helpful and caring replies. I know I can offer support as often as I'm able and when it's needed. If I no longer feel welcomed and accepted because trolls aren't being dealt with appropriately, I'll take a hike.

Imo, "I'm frigid", despite being ridiculous and idiotic, caused enough problems here to warrant being banned, and I'm glad the mods took action.

Yay mods!! :D

Looks good,

I agree

posting porn = instant insineration via flaming ban button

Warnings are good give those who just might be different or express themselves differntly, a chance to explain and make applogies. And it should also give the the Mods and other forum members a chance to explain too.

I say if you see trollish posts ignore them, or if you feel a need to say something about PM a Mod first, let them know where the post is so they can keep an eye on it, maybe move it to the hotbox.

I don't know if it can be done here, but maybe try something a little less severe than banning like a suspension - disable the account for for a week, couple weeks, a month and reopen it. They can come back after set period of time and if they behave thats cool if they start to really cause trouble again ...fiery ban button. Might be good so sort who is a troll and who is just a "village idiot"

It's coming along fine I suppose. Some scenes are more fun to research than others.

I just can't seem to concentrate on anything long enough to work on the next draft of the banning policy. I'll try to slap something together now...

This is what I have thus far:

AVEN Banning Policy

This board is an open board. Joining is free and a person doesn’t have to be asexual to be a member. All views are allowed, as is disagreeing with those views. The only thing we ask is posters respect the rest of the board. A person who insults the entire board by making sweeping generalisations will make no friends.

Trolls will be banned. Because it is sometimes difficult to discern if a person is a troll or simply lacking in tact, decisions will be based on the response of the board and a poll of the admods*.

Spam or Porn Posting: Banned with no warning [by ‘spam’ we mean ads for drugs, software, etc, not sidetracking threads with random comments.]

Blatantly Offensive, Attacking Post Content: One private warning then one public warning. If the poster continues being offensive/makes no reparations he or she will be banned.

Argumentative, Subjectively Offensive Content: One private warning, two public warnings.

Information on Trolls:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll

If you think a person is a troll (or if a non-troll topic is getting out of hand) please pm an admod—we like to have a tab on the general feeling of the site. That way when a person has to be banned or receive a warning the admod who issues the warning can say, ‘I’ve received several messages about this person etc.’

*Used by kind permission of SpockJr to denote admins and moderators

Anything to change/add/take into account?

It's going to depend largely on individual situations, but this should be a good jumping off point.

I'm going to ask DJ to put it as a link somewhere on AVEN 2.0 so anyone can see it.

Good to see the banning policy (draft?)

It makes it clear to all those would be trolls.

That was the policy I was trying to follow last night with Slappy.

I say it's a solid model, it worked well for us last night (about 7 hours from first offensive post to ban)

there's only so much you can do to reason with some people. i'd say that covers everyone willing to be reasoned with

QUESTION:

I've noticed in the Hot Box that one or two threads originated elsewhere start with an admod posting something to the effect of: I moved this to the Hot Box.

Does the "troll" who started the thread get any notification of where to find the thread, or is he just stuck having to look around for it?

Personally, I like trolls. I think, as the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, an offensive poster is often someone most in need of education.

For example, if someone posts: "I think you all just call yourselves asexual because you're in denial about not being able to get any," I would want to have a chance to express sympathy, not with his offensiveness, but with his skepticism.

After all, it took a week for me to take everyone else on the site seriously, and I'm one of you.

Education needs a willing (or at least receptive) target to work. Trolls are not interested in learning, they do their thing for amusement purposes only

Many post once or twice and disappear, never to return.
