Oooh! Thats BIG!

That would be really cool to have HUGE versions of the best ones...

I'll have a go at making some to that size

Hmmm... well I had a go at resizing one of the images to the Large Poster size last night, and my computer crashed on me! Poor little thing could hardly cope with all the effort it was having to make (the file would have been about 250 Megs if it had worked!). I'll try it on my work computer instead...

If you are thinking of doing this through cafepress, that's at least ten times the size of the largest graphics file they have let me upload so far.

Oh, thats interesting.... so how do they expect us to upload an image of that size at a decent resolution then? I'll try it at a lower res and see what the file size is like...

I'm thinking.. if it doesn't need to be available online, you can just bring a CD to your local print shop and they'd print it for you at professional quality (at exorbitant prices, I might add.. :?).

I'm currently working on making all the posters available on AVEN, with AVENguy's help, of course! Initially, they will only be available in the European standard paper size, A4 (210mm x 297mm) but that won't stop you Americans from printing them out as long as you check your 'Scale to fit paper' box before you hit the print button. I don't know what paper sizes are used in other parts of the world, though.

Well it seems that there ARE some potential legal problems involved in making the posters available online so they will not, in their current form, be downloadable from AVEN.

This is to do with the terms of use of media supplied to the Microsoft Office website by other companies, which have brought two possible issues to my attention:

1. That the images cannot be used in a way that might cause an individual to be ridiculed, which arguably these posters could be if one of the models was recognised from them and then hassled about being asexual even though they are not. Very unlikely, but its not really worth the risk of getting DJ into trouble.

2. There was also a vague mention in the terms of use about not using images of people in relation to any sexual issues. I interpret this as meaning that not only can you not superimpose the head of a model onto pornographic material, but you also can't imply anything about their sexuality.

So basically it ain't gonna happen.

BUT <--- and thats a big but!

We can work around this in one of two ways in order to essentially use the same designs:

1. We could use original illustrations that picture the same subject but do not identify any living persons that might sue us. The downside of this plan is that I cannot draw people, so someone else would have to do it! (Although I intend to take some drawing classes in the next couple of months)

2. We could use ourselves as the models and take new photographs which fit in with the theme of the posters. The downside of this plan is that people have to be willing to become The Face of Asexuality, and that the pictures have to be of a good enough quality to be used on the posters (ie. high resolution of 300dpi + and good lighting, etc) This could be a problem if all our models are spread around the face of the earth and not all of them know a good photographer.

Ah.. nothing is ever straightforward, eh?

If anyone else has any bright ideas or wants to volunteer as an artist or model then PLEASE let me know! :)

Artwork? I'm tempted to give it a go, though I should warn you, I'm not a professional by any means! I've certainly never seen any of my work on a poster, but this does sound like a great chance to actually be useful around here. Very very tempting. The other thing is that I can sometimes be a bit on the slow side (especially since my second year of university just started) but for something this important I'd do my best. I haven't ever done any work that's actually been intended for print, though (I can always ask for help, though - I know where to go for that)

Still, I might well be willing to give this one a go, since it'll be great to feel like I'm doing something more useful here than sitting around saying "wibble" all day!

I'll have to find somebody nearby with a scanner, but I want to try drawing something for this project. It has been a while since I drew anything, though.

Liver, do you want drawings similar to the pictures you were going to use or can we just do whatever we want?

Using drawings is just an idea at the moment, but may well be more feasible than gathering a large enough group of volunteers willing to be photographed, which would be my first choice (using photographs would make it all seem more real, I'm thinking)

But if you talented people can put some thought into what sort of image you could produce that would convey the reality of asexuality, then there really might be a lot of potential in using illustrations instead. If we're going to use original illustrations then we may as well be a bit more creative about it rather than producing images that mimick the photographs I used in the original designs.

So your mission, if you choose to accept it, would be to simply think about / sketch some ideas for posters that get the message about life as an asexual across in a striking way - something that'll grab people's attention. Your image would be the main focus of the poster, but would probably work along with some kind of caption (like the original designs) that clarifies what the poster is about.

Hell, I sound like some kind of art and design tutor!

I think this could be a really interesting and satisfying project for all concerned if we can all commit a small amount of time to it each week. AVEN posters using original illustrations by AVEN members - you can't get more appropriate than that! :D

Anyone have any thoughts / comments / alternative ideas?

Wibble! :D

Perhaps different AVENites could send you pictures and you could make a collage from them. That would illustrate our diversity.

Just an idea for one poster.

Thats the ticket, Jeremy. Keep those ideas coming!

I think it would be good to try and illustrate the experiences you have had as someone who identifies as asexual, how you see the world, and how people have reacted to you as a nonsexual person.
