steve01
Do asexuals tend to have certain personality characteristics (other than having no sexual attraction) more frequently than the general population?
emmarainbow
The problem with that statement is that we're all AVENites, not all asexuals, and these are the characteristics that appear to be common on the internet; and a forum is proabbly not a section of real life. We tend to be introverted, a bit geeky, strongly individuals and more likely to favour androgeny. We also tend not to drink or follow the crowd. Quite a lot of us tend to err on caution (of course, I personally am a mildly feminine extrovert who *does* drink while throwing caution to the winds, but meh.)
Parth
I think that's what the Census forum wishes to find out, but so far there are little results. Including what Emma has just said.
thylacine
I have a few drinks now and then... but I've never been like falling down & under the table & wrecking cars & etc... I don't think we have addictive personalities or hedonistic behaviors.
Hailtheplatypus
I would also assume a very low percentage of us are pyromaniacs... no offense to anyone though  to be honest aside from asexuality, asexuals vary like regular people.

Except for the androgeny part. :P
thylacine
I have an androgynous mind. I don't scream when I see a spider, I can take care of my own car & run my own finances, yet I like jewelry & clothes. I guess that makes me androgynous.

Coleslaw
Do asexuals tend to have certain personality characteristics (other than having no sexual attraction) more frequently than the general population? No I agree. In the end, we're a bunch of individuals. We all differ. I mean, the qualities that emmarainbow stated may be found heavily on AVEN, but out of all those qualities, very few fit me. It's the same with any other group of people. There may be a stereotype, but in the end, not everyone in a specific group of people is exactly the same.
ily
Again, no. We seem like a cross-section of the general population. But, people who actually admit they're asexual might have different traits than people who are in denial about it (and there are many).
thylacine
I would think we're a pretty diverse bunch.

Sarafin
I find that clothes affect my mannerisms. If I'm in heels and a skirt, I tend to do more feminine things with my hands, and I sway my hips more. If I'm in pants and boots, my hands are usually in my pockets and I walk like I can look after myself. I'm androgynous, but still look feminine. I like drinks on occasion, but prefer marijuana. I'm definitely a social person - preferring company over being alone, though I'd like to get my own apartment (I share right now). The only sex I like is masturbation and dry humping people, but dry humping doesn't really get me excited - I do it to compromise with the other person, so they get something out of it sexually. It's non-invasive, so I don't mind it. -Sarafin
PatricioINTP
Schizoids are asexuals, as the DSM-IV has one of the PD traits as: "has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person". I am introverted and before discovering the word 'asexual' not too long ago, I just thought I had a little of this in me. But to call asexuals schizoid is as wrong as calling mammals wales since all wales are mammals. Sarafin's saying she is a social person preferring company proves that. I definitely don't follow the crowd and I am a strong indivdual... so I'll give you that!

Those characteristics you compiled for asexuals all describe me quite well. But then again...it's debatable whether I'm a geek. Rather than that, I'd say I'm overly dramatic, enough for other people to find it rather strange. I agree, though, with your interpretation that the internet does not provide a random sample. It seems reasonable that the internet would draw people with those qualities.

Seriously though, I'm a gigantic geek, and quite proud of it (actually, I prefer the term "nerd.") I never thought I looked androgynous in the past, but lately I've been getting mistaken for a man quite a lot. Maybe it's my deep voice and baggy jeans? I dunno...
Midwoka
Well, I'm introverted, geeky, strongly individualistic, and I favor androgyny. I don't really drink or follow the crowd. qecantilles
I have definately seen a higher percentage of what society would define as nerds. There's also a lot more openess, acceptance, a higher percentage of intelligent people, unusual amount of socialists from what I have seen. There are indviduals, but I'm gonna say yeah a higher concentration of freaks and geeks here. And since I admit to being both I am happy to be here.
