Favorite movie and why?

Hey! Since I talked about Grease in a previous post, I thought about just talking about movies in general. So, what's your favorite movie, and, why? I'll start with mine...

-Ratatouille: I think this has to be at least my favorite animated film. I love everything about this film. Its look, style, and character just leave me so happy!

-Pink Floyd: The Wall: I love how well this movie works. Not only as an adaptation of a brilliant album. But also as a standalone film. The imagery, the animated segments, the acting, all awesome. Though, if you are a little faint of heart, you might want to skip it. It can get a little...dark. To say the least.

-Hudson Hawk: I only heard about this film from my family. And, I'm glad I did! If you hadn't heard of this movie, I'd recommend you get to watching it. It's dumb, but, it's dumb fun! The only way I can describe this film the video game series UnCharted, but, in the early 90's, while also not taking itself seriously at all. (This movie has song numbers, and, villains named after candies.)

-Brazil: This is a dark film. And, I love it so much. I love the score, the acting, the setting, and I adore its surreal nature. I won't spoil anything. But, the first time my brother watched this film. He saw the ending and said, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" Yeah, it's THAT kind of film.

-The Meaning Of Life: This is the only film that I can say ever had my eyes hurt from crying with laughter in the intro alone. This film was hilarious. Though, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

So, what's your favorite movie?

Anne of Green Gables. I've seen it about 100 times. I wish life was like that, but with racial diversity.

Oh, sounds good!

The Zero Theorem is an amazing movie one of my favorites. Got bad reviews but its a masterpiece.

Howl's Moving Castle. It's just beautiful with the visuals! The anti-war message is also a favorite of mine, though it wasn't in the original book. But the main characters are so adorable together! And the world is fascinating to imagine!

Underworld. The best movie in this Vampire/Werewolf world that just gets crazier. Dark and mysterious, a really cool fantasy with all the leather porn and weirdly colored environments that I just love no matter how cheesy.

The prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is cool too with a different environment being in the past and having a forbidden romance mixed with discrimination and learned helplessness and just all sorts of wonderful ideas. Can never decide which I prefer.

Movies that get in your head and are fascinating (so that 's why I like them) :

The Jacket - Donnie Darko - Stay - Waking Life - Shutter Island - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

The Dark Knight, Joker is my hero

Casablanca is my favorite movie of all time. If you have to ask why then it's obvious you've never seen it.

The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie because it's the first Disney movie I remember seeing as a kid.

I like Fight Club because how off the rails it gets.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space is high on the list not for the movie itself but for the reaction it gets from first time viewers. Every time I have someone new watch it the reaction is stunned silence followed by some variation of "What did I just watch?"

Favorite movie series - Star Wars, hands down.

Favorite movie of all time - Either Avatar or Toy Story 1.

The Birdcage and Rocky Horror Picture Show are probably among my two favorite movies of all time.

Favorite Disney movie though would be Aladdin or Treasure Planet 😄

Treasure Planet is a gem hands down

To Kill A Mockingbird: Gregory Peck played the perfect Atticus Finch! And that court scene gets me every time!

Closet Monster: empowering coming-of-age artsy story that has an amazing soundtrack and is one of those movies where you can point out something new after watching it multiple times ( also a good pride movie)

The Polar Express: Christmas doesn't feel the same without it...and yes it's required to drink hot chocolate while watching it

Favorite Disney Movie: Atlantis (Treasure Planet is a close second): First off, Atlantis is awesome. I love the strong main character who wins because of his brains and his good heart and not is brawn. I love the strong female characters Kida, Audrey, and Helga. Mrs. Packrad is hilarious. Mole is just sort of unfortunate, but most of the team is awesome. And overall Milo is just great. And Treasure Planet has one of the best villains in animated Disney history, certainly the most complex and one of the few to be a villain turned good guy. You don't get enough of that. And for the main bad guy to be the one to inspire and be the center of the main hero's character arc is fantastic.

Favorite Not-Disney Movie: Man From UNCLE: I think it's interesting, witty, and it plays well to my sense of humor. I love the dynamic between all of the characters.

I forgot to add To Kill A Mockingbird. I loved that movie. And, I have to agree. That court scene is pretty epic!

I love many movies, but the most recent one I’ve seen and love is the Shaun The Sheep Movie. It is so funny, cute, heartwarming and has wonderful stop motion animation. I plan to get my own DVD of it for my movie collection.

Most things Disney? Don’t really have any top favorite movies. There’s some I find soothing and could rewatch a million times but not say they’re fantastic. There’s some I think are actual art but not want to rewatch. It also depends on my mood.

Apparently there’s a live action Mulan on the way.

When it comes to stand alone, not part of a franchise film, I'll have to go with:

Leon the Professional

I love this film because it has a interesting set of characters, a pretty awesome soundtrack (Eric Serra is probably my favorite film composer because of this and one other film), a somewhat unique, if not risque, story (a young 12  year old girl falls in love with an assassin who takes her in after her parents die and tries to have an intimate relationship with him, and he's trying to raise her like a daughter), and you can't beat the acting of Jean Reno and Gary Oldman here. Both Reno and Oldman give top notch performances (even the "Bring me...EVERYONE!!!!!" Line is awesome).

When it comes to films within a franchise, it would be:

Goldeneye (a part of the 007 series, which is my favorite series of films)

What I liked about it was it's dark and gritty portrayal of 007 with it's post cold war themes (plus, I like the fact that the film makers were finally able to film in Russia with this film, which was a big deal and helped the world see into what was kind of a mystery at the time). I think this was Pierce Brosnans best role, not only as 007 but also in general (but Remington Steele comes close, but that has a very slight 007 vibe to it). Eric Serra did the music here too, and it has my second favorite soundtrack he did.

I also like a lot of darker anime (such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell) as well as a lot of Disney, but the two I listed were my top two.

Nothing fancy or highbrow here

Dambusters (the original)

Beverly Hills Cop

The Italian Job (original)

Carry on Dick (plus most of the others)

Raiders of the lost ark, (et seq)

Highpoint

Any of the Hal Needham directed Burt Reynolds + car movies

1. Some Like It Hot, definitely. It's just so much fun all the way! Jack Lemmon as Jerry is just pure perfection.

2. Oldboy (2003). In the end I just staring at screen in shock, mentally screaming WHAT THE FUCK, and I even sat through the end credits just dumbfounded.

3. Up. Yes. The Pixar movie. Pretty much the same genre as my second favourite, I know. The music, the first ten minutes, Dug, the final shot... love it.

I don't have terribly high standards, so:

Ella Enchanted: Will love, forever. At this point it's a comfort movie for me because I've watched it so many times. Something I can sit back and enjoy or put on for background noise as I do other stuff.

Harry Potter 1-3: I've watched these to death and will continue doing so because they have a hold on my heart and I can recite many lines from each of them, yes I can, especially the first one. Note, I used to not watch the first movie often because Quirrell scared me as a child, but I eventually got over that.

Howl's Moving Castle: One of my true loves, something I initially did not want to watch due to the cover not at all looking like a castle.

Kiki's Delivery Service

Spirited Away

Basically most Studio Ghibli films.

Ever After

Mulan

Beauty and the Beast

Aladdin

How to Train Your Dragon

A few that I love dearly but don't get around to watching too often:

Nightmare Before Christmas

Corpse Bride

Prince of Egypt

I'd say I listen to the soundtracks more often than I watch these three movies.

One of my all-time favourite movies is Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. While most of his movies are already very in line with my own aesthetics / creative imagination, this one hits the nail right on the head.

I also love Pirates of the Caribbean very dearly, it's a world I can lose myself in over and over again.

I like a great many silent films, and "The Blue Bird" (1918) must be my favourite. It's possibly the most dreamy movie that has ever been made.

Grumpy Alien

I just watched God's Own Country and I'm O B S E S S E D. Reading all the fanfiction 😂

I really didn't expect it to have the kind of ending it did. I was super happy about that. But also, I just really like that it tells a story that I've never seen before in such a simplistic way. It's also got my favorite kind of characters but without the over the top tropes. (Trying not to give much away because I really recommend the film!)

Star Wars because... Star Wars.

Also, The Princess Bride and Wonder Boys.  Wonder Boys didn't do well at the box office and you probably haven't heard of it.  Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr, Tobey Maguire, Frances McDormand and Katie Holmes are in it.  A dark comedy of sorts about a writing professor (Douglas) and one of his students (Maguire).  I'm not good at describing things but it's worth a look-see.

Star Wars and The Princess Bride you've probably heard of.  They're worth a look-see too.

Favourite overall is probably Labyrinth, it was a big thing in my house when I was growing up, my brother and I watched it so many times and it just gives me so much nostalgia and good feelings.

Runners up include:

Nightmare Before Christmas (similar reasons to above, also big influence on my aesthetics)

Les Miserables 10th Anniversary (its an official stage recording but the singers they got, it just gets me every time. It was one of 3 musicals I watched almost every week for about a year when I was a kid)

Captain America: The Winter Solder (I adore marvel anyway but the soundtrack in this, the way Bucky was written, so many other factors just hit the right tone for me.)

The movies I keep falling back on and have for years, so I guess they're favorites:

Indiana Jones, et al.

The Mummy/The Mummy Returns

Big Trouble in Little China - esp. when I need a bit of off the wall fun

Independence Day

Mystery Men - B & C list heroes step forward to stop a madman (played by Geoffrey Rush) in their own unique way

The Shadow - while not much of an Alec Baldwin fan, he actually pulls this part off with panache

Galaxy Quest

Doctor Strange

Black Panther

Star Trek: The Voyage Home

Star Trek TNG: First Contact

...

Aaah... There's so many movies!

  • Beauty and the Beast [1991]
I related a lot to Belle growing up!
I'm a reader, a dreamer, and was the "odd one" due to me being so introverted in a family of extroverts. She wanted more out of her life, and I get that!
  • Howl's Moving Castle
DEFINITELY RELATED TO SOPHIE. Being the eldest to two younger siblings, and sort of just... Getting by, receiving what was offered to me with not much self-esteem. I saw so much of her in me.
It was also my first Studio Ghibli film, so it's really special to me!
The movie's really pretty to look at, and even looking back on it now, it's still as stunning as it was in theatres! Merry-Go-Round of Life pulls at my heartstrings every time I listen to it. I get so nostalgic, and tear up.
  • Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart
This movie caught me by surprise!
The pacing of the movie was a little bit off, it felt, at times, but I ended up really enjoying it overall. The animation was nice, the characters were all very porcelain doll-like, and the music wasn't too bad for me either. The music took a little bit more getting used to, but it was great!
I'm also a sucker for romances, and just how creative it felt to me — I don't know — it just struck a chord in me!
  • Your Name / Kimi no Na Wa
I watched this one in theatres with a group of friends, and tried playing it really cool that it didn't affect me as much as it really did. The animation and scenery was beautiful!
I mean, yeah, there were some loose ends and I really wished they expanded more on Taki's character, but it was a fun watch anyway.
It's also a special movie between me and my best friend.

That's all I can think of atm...!

[EDIT: SORRY, I POSTED BEFORE FINISHING MY POST 😂]

Agree! Howl's Moving Castle is my most favoritest movie in the universe. Could watch a million times and never get sick of it. Always inspires me when I've hit writer's block. The book it's based on is amazing, too.

If I had to pick a live-action movie, though, it'd be It's A Wonderful Life. My family and I watch it every Christmas Eve. We put the manicotti in the oven, and about halfway through the movie, we get our food. We open presents afterward. George Bailey is one of my favorite characters. He's such a great guy. We quote this movie year-round, we named our cat Zuzu, after one of the characters, I put one of the quotes on my graduation cap, and I can't recommend it enough. It's about how your life affects so many, even in the tiniest of ways. It's timeless and has an uplifting sense of community. It's really not a Christmas movie, only the last bit takes place during Christmas, but I don't mind.
