Artists/bands a lot of people like that you don't

I don't get why people like Nirvina so much. What's the big deal with Niki Minaj anyway?

There's the obvious ones: One Direction and Justin Beiber.

Elvis Presley. I never could understand the appeal of Elvis Presley. I think people like to do his songs in karaoke because he practically lost his entire vocal range later on and so the songs are easy to sing.

I can't stand Skrillix or any of the club/party/sex type songs that just repeat the same things about getting drunk and having a one night stand over and over. I like music with a lot of artistry/originality that has a theme I can identify with, so most of the popular music these days just irritates me.

Three Days Grace, Disturbed, and any other bands with that sound and subject matter. It just reminds me of a bald 30-40 year old wearing a green shirt and pair of black shorts who has a delusionally high opinion of himself and doesn't see why people think it's gross when he eats half a hamburger and offers someone else to finish because he's supposed to be watching what he's eating and is already breaking the rules by even taking a bite of the burger (foods that can be cooked on the grill are just his guilty pleasure).

I kind of have mixed feelings about Eminem. On one hand, he's made some very inspirational songs like "Not Afraid" and "Guts Over Fear" as uplifting messages to people who went through the same struggles he did. He's also very good with words. On the other hand, he's made very assholish remarks about other people in his songs, including a recent rape one. (I don't like the singer he directed that to, but some of the things he says in his songs are psychotically disturbing)

My friend William introduced me to Nightwish. They're very good. I also like Tool and System Of A Down. My nephew got me into System Of A Down when he played their songs in the car and we'd sing along to 'Violent Pornography' and the one with the line 'With a feeling so pure', can't remember its name currently. I remember the preceding line as being very rude though!

Tool are pretty amazing, Lateralus is one of my favourite ever rock/metal songs! Speaking of System of a Down, when I saw A Day To Remember, in between acts they played Chop Suey and almost the entirety of the crowd was singing along. I only caught a little of it on my phone but it was brilliant to hear :)

Chop Suey! That's the one. Cheers, mate.

This thread has given me an idea for another thread.

I like some on your list, Frey, such as Elvis, Mumford and Sons and Norah Jones but I 'liked' your post because a lot of those you dislike and the criteria you use to judge them match with my own.

Thanks!! Finally someone else who doesn't like Elvis and Mumford and sons!

Flippin' 'eck, our Frey! I actually admitted I LIKE Elvis and Mumford and Sons but I definitely agree with most of the other stuff!

I don't really like Nicki Minaj. I mean her songs have a nice beat to them, but the image is terrible and her recent video brought a lot of controversy because of the parallels to Nazis (even worse was she and the others in the video were comparing themselves to Nazis). It had a good beat but by god the lyrics. Ugh, terrible.

I don't really like Lorde either. Her voice grates on me.

There was a time where my co-workers would joke and laugh every time Adele came on as it irritated me. Massively over-played, but I'm getting back to being OK and liking some of her songs.

I don't really like much rap. Don't like Pink Floyd and think everyone's obsession with them is silly. Everyone being classic rock fans, obviously, and not like the general population and today's youth (although there are young fans).

I don't really get the appeal of Blake Shelton, or almost any country people. Hm.

.

Going back in time a bit, I never understood why so many people worshiped Joni Mitchell and her music. It sounds depressing, and Joni Mitchell looked kind of homely.

Her song Royals is pretty much the bane of my existence.

Oh! awwww I misread that

Just thought of another band I don't like: Sex Pistols.

I don't get rap at all. In most I've heard, the beat is flat, their voices sound whiny, and nothing they talk about has any substance. In fact, the only rap song that I've found that I like is Same Love, but only because of the message and irony of criticizing one's own genre.

If that's the case, I recommend J. Cole. He's one of very few rappers whose music has substance.

Oh, and I dislike the music of Justin Bieber, somewhat Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, All Chicago drill rappers, and Beyonce

Prince. I kind of like "When Doves Cry", but not other than that. He gives me the vibe of someone who smells bad because of having sex and masturbating a lot, but not showering often enough.

I don't like Radiohead all that much sure they have some good songs but most of their material just sounds the same. I find them to be depressing and could name many other bands of the 1990's that are better than them.

I cannot stand Guns N Roses and don't know why they are so popular. I find Slash talented but just don't like their songs and find Axl Rose to be so full of himself.

Although I agree with most comments in this thread, I haven't seen Bjork or Kate Bush mentioned so far. I find them both incredibly overrated especially as they're hailed as music geniuses. Their lyrics just seem like an attempt to be 'deep' and it comes across as very artificial to me.

I don't like all these "emo-ish" bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore or My Chemical Romance. My ears can't stand them for various reasons.

This is not a band specifically but I cannot stand the song "Cake by the Ocean." Like I viscerally hate it. Everytime it comes on the radio I want to jump out the window.

A lot of contemporary pop soloists sound like they're singing variations on one bland emo-ey song. I can't stand listening to Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and anyone who sounds anything like them. A lot of their music videos are horrible tacky kitzch too, not that that's a new phenomenon.

There are specific genres I don't like, and very popular long-time artists in them that do nothing for me, but I don't really feel like bringing up any names in light of some of the lack of talent that seems to come out of the pop "stardom" of our present era.

Hmm, well lets see...

* = Artists I don't hate, but I don't like as much as other people do.

  • Linkin Park - Yes, I know it's sad about what happened to Chester, but I have never, ever liked their music, and never will. I can't stand Rap Metal/Nu Metal, and LP is no exception
  • 99% of Rap/hip hop, with the exception of Kanye West because some of his songs are actually quite enjoyable to listen too. Pink Guy is another exception as well, but I'm not sure if he counts because his raps are comedic.
  • Meghan Trainor - I hate her mostly because of the lyrics she uses in her songs. They are awful. I also find most of her music boring and overplayed.
  • Justin Bieber - Annoying songs, has rabid fangirls, and is a massive arsehole in real life.
  • One Direction* - Ok, I'll admit that I do like some of their songs, but I still think they are incredibly overhyped. The "Directioners" horrendous, and probably one of the worst fanbases on the planet.
  • 5 Seconds of Summer - Hate all their music, except for one song, which is Jet Black Heart. They just really annoy me, and I find myself grinding my teeth when ever I hear their music or see them on TV. I also find it aggravating when people refer to them as hard rock. No, they're not...
  • Fall Out Boy - They had one or two okay songs, but the rest doesn't interest one bit.
  • The Smashing Pumpkins - Honestly, I've tried to like the band. I really have, but I just can't get past the vocals. Not my thing at all.
  • The Vamps - Hate their music.
  • Justice Crew - I hate the "I'm so cool, look at me dance and do flips" persona they have. Their music is garbage as well.
  • Paramore* - I don't hate them, but I never found them interesting. I don't mind a few of their songs though.
  • Neon Trees - *Yawn*, moving on.
  • Miley Cyrus - I don't mind some of her songs (and I actually kinda liked Wrecking Ball), but most of them are garbage. I hate her persona as well, and that stupid thing she does with her tongue.
  • Selena Gomez - Crap music, and the only time I liked her was when she collaborated with Zedd.
  • Chris Brown - Never liked his music that much, but I really started despising him after he bashed Rihanna. I mean, what a lowlife.
  • Pitbull - I find he always ruins songs. I thought he ruined Timber by Ke$ha, for example.
  • Fetty Wrap - His voice is just... awful. Like Pitbull, I also think he ruins good songs.
  • Drake - Just don't like him that much. I'll admit that some of his less mainstream songs arn't bad though. I did like his song Jumpman.
  • Whoever sang the "Whip whp, nae nae" song. - One of my least-favourite songs of all-time.
  • Judas Priest* - They're alright, but not my favourite Metal band ever.
  • Kiss - Meh. 80s hair metal is a guilty pleasure of mine, but KISS just arn't interesting to me. I usually end up skipping their songs if they come up on a playlist.
  • Most Country artists - I hate, hate, hate country music. The only exceptions are a small handful of female singers that I don't mind.
  •

EDIT: Forget what I said about AC/DC, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. After listening to them a bit more, and my taste in music changing significantly, I really like them now.

To avoid the obvious (like mainstream pop rock, ugh), let's say Melanie Martinez. She has an interesting aesthetic and in theory could be up my alley, but the melodies of her songs are super meh to me, and her extra breathy and dramatic singing style gets annoying.

Arcade Fire. The hype always irritated me because everything they did had already been done better by someone else.

I could probably list most of the modern top 40's artists here, to be honest. But the ones I have especially strong feelings about are Justin Bieber, Jay Z, One Direction, Coldplay, Maroon 5, T Pain, Kanye West, Lana Del Rey, Nickelback, Skrillex, and Nicki Minaj. In a more general sense... Artists that slather their songs in strong autotune, instead of using it for effect or minor corrections; it's grating on my ears. Artists whose songs have bland lyrics like "I'm in the club," or "I'll treat you right, girl", or any other reiteration of getting drunk, partying, and having their eyes on a pretty woman. That kind of stuff got old the first thousand times I heard it. And most rap artists. I can listen to some of Eminem's stuff, and Zack Hemsey has frequent rotation on my playlists. I do like the emotion behind some rap songs, and I don't mind the spoken word over singing. But the lyrical content of the songs I've heard, at least the more popular stuff, never seems to be tame (sensible?) enough for my liking.
