Autochorissexualism - A term found meaning...

The internet trends are weird... Essentially... Autochorissexualism, Autochorissexuals and Autochorissexuality mean's quote

A disconnection between oneself and a sexual target/object of arousal; may involve sexual fantasies, or arousal in response to erotica or pornography, but lacking any desire to be a participant in the sexual activities therein. Commonly found in asexual people; an analogous feeling may occur in aromantic people for romantic fantasies.

I imagine that autochorissexual people could be asexual-spectrum or non-asexual-spectrum. It doesnt disqualify someone from being asexual, in case you were wondering about that.

To me though... that's a normal sexual phenomena experiences by most. Many sexuals would consider this, even when sexual fantasy, erotica etc. don't lead onto sex.

Is it really a necessary label... The 'glossary' is here http://anagnori.tumblr.com/post/67669933207/words-and-concepts-often-used-in-asexual-communities.

Eh... I experience that, but I don't need a label for it

so... whats your take on it?

It's a cool little word that could be used in some cases, but not something you would openly use to introduce yourself.

It's kind of like someone who likes kink openly stating what they like having done to them to every person they bump into. There is a reason why we use broad words like ace, straight, gay, ect. If we go into to much detail it starts to get kind of awkward.

huh. i both enjoy and now hate that its common enough that there is[/are] word for that. great, a new giant word for me to describe myself that people won't understand

Aww! Well, just because it's a word doesn't mean it's common. It's one of those words that someone just made up by putting a bunch of roots together. Describing your sexuality with a long word is the same thing as describing it with a sentence.

Isn't that just voyeurism?

I'd say there seems to be major overlap between the concepts, but they're not quite the same.

It sounds like a sexual equivalent of lithromanticism... lithsexual?

Doesn't really sound like that to me at all. Lithsexual, as I understand it, means "the only desirable form of sex is to be one-sided as giver, with no reciprocation". (I mean, come on, the very word is based on the stone butch Lesbian subculture.)

I'd say that autochowatchamacallit ( :P) is another step removed - the only desirable sex here is the one that doesn't actually happen at all.

Cool, sounds like a label that I can use. Hetero-autochorissexual would fit me well.

eh I doubt it'll ever catch on and there's not much point in telling people you're that word if you have to explain it every time when you could have just started with the explanation. I would say it definitely is different from lithsexual or voyerism. Lithsexual would connate sexual attraction, that autochorisexual would connate sexual arousal. And I think voyerism is more of an activity and voyeur as someone who partakes in voyerism. So this person would likely experience autochoirism feelings, but it might not be an all the time case that they never feel sexual attraction so they might not define themself as an autochirsexual, though some might. So calling yourself autochoirissexual would mean that you felt sexual attraction none of the time but sexual arousal from erotica some of time. Or atleast that's how I see it, I'm not very familiar with voyerism.

...Not another label. Not for that. Please.

I get that labels can help defining people, but this is really taking it too far.

You're not allowed to say what others should or should not label themselves as :p

I never said that. All I said was that I don't approve of that label. I generally just say "whatever, if people want to use it fine by me", and I'm not one to stop others from saying "I'm autochorissexual" (good luck pronouncing it!), but I'll never think of it as useful. Sorry :P

I think any label can be useful or comforting in that it says 'there are enough other people like me in this respect that it warrants a word to describe it'. A slightly narrower definition of autochorissexual would to some extent describe me, and though I'll probably not use it to describe myself outside of this conversation I'm glad PDT brought it up because it clarifies other aspects of my identity in my mind and makes me feel a bit less strange.

I had some comments on this on Tumblr.

In short, this is not a "weird internet trend". "Autochorissexualism" was coined by psychologist Anthony Bogaert, world expert on asexuality!

That said, I'm not sure it is very useful. In fact, it would have been more useful if it were in fact a weird internet trend. I mean, if the term were invented by people to describe themselves, it would have been useful. But in reality it was created by a scientist to describe other people. As a result, it's overly technical and kind of a mouthful. (although if some people still find it useful, that's cool too)

That is precisely what baffles me, actually. Had it been a made-up Internet term like any other, I wouldn't have bothered. But why coin a term to describe something like that? I don't really get it, I'm afraid.

(Though all in all, whatever. There are plenty of made-up terms that come to see the light of day only to fall into disuse later on.)

The paper explains the rationale, and is quite short, if you have access. Bogaert proposed it to explain a thread on AVEN where people described their masturbation fantasies, or lack thereof. He thought many answers were not at all typical. If it sounds like typical sexual experience, perhaps you may not realize how most people feel about it. Or perhaps Anagnori's definition isn't conveying the idea properly.

Also, in my experience, scientists are very liberal in coining terms... In all fields.

People certainly like toying around with ancient Greek. Well, at least this is not another Greek-Latin mixed made up term in the root... Until the sexual(ism) part. This would have to be Autochorisphilia in Greek. Auto means self and choris (or xoris how I write it) without. I would not judge somebody who uses this term, but to me personally, this is one of the times when terms come and go.

labels are used to put a 'name to a face' as it were. So if people want to use this as a way to label themselves, while technically not needed in many ways is very helpful, especially to people who don't understand.

Not to mention you'll have to use a sentence or paragraph later on. Just thought I'd mention.

This strikes me as one of those long words one of my high-school teachers would feature as his "useless fact of the day" - others including:

"Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" (a kind of lung cancer), and

"Antidisestablishmentarianism."

Really long words have meaning, even a useful meaning, but when scribbled on the board, you get five minutes of students amusing themselves trying to pronounce it.

That said, word coinage is always interesting. The fact that a researcher came up with it only means it's a technical term, not something that's likely to stay in the mainstream. Except as, perhaps, the longest word describing a facet of (a)sexuality?
