Light topic:

I work part time at a grocery store. Immediately after Christmas, we had to get Valentines stuff out. And believe it or not, half of it has already sold.

So, what do you prefer as a Valentines gift?

Chocolates?

Flowers?

Jewelry?

Stuffed Animals?

Romantic Dinner?

Evening with friends in the hot tub?

What makes you FEEL Valentines?

Ok. Here's your chance to tell us in all its magnificent detail what turns you on for Valentines?

For me, It's chocolates. I love chocolate. Every holiday I get lots of chocolate, that usually will last till the next holiday. I am just now finishing up my Christmas chocolate, looking forward to a couple nice Valentines Heart shaped Boxes of chocolate to last me till Easter. :D :D :D

I chose 'other' because the thing that makes me FEEL Valentines is nausea LOL. (You know how some people hate Christmas decorations coming out in November, I hate Valentines coming out in January).

The one thing I get a kick out of is the 5pm line up at the floral counters of Safeway, SaveOn, Sobeys etc etc of husbands knowing they needn't bother going home without picking something up...and it wouldn't have dawned on them to even do it but they realised it at 2:30 when every woman in the office bitched that she hadn't gotten anything.

BUT...what makes me FEEL other special days is definitely going out for supper. Doesn't have to be 'romantic', I just like doing that and not having another ugly present to have to pretend to like.

This must be an american thing..

Valentines day in the UK has always been ONLY an anonymous card (or at least one pretending to be anonymous) with the possible exception of courting couples who were allowed to accept roses/chocolate/wine as a gift from each other...and even then it is only the ladies who get the cards/presents. It is also considered acceptable for parents to send cards to their girl children (just in case no-one else does).

Sorry to disagree Roddy, but I've had the odd bouquet delivered to my office  (it was originally anonymous, but he couldn't not tell me n the end), 200 cigarettes (when I was smoking) and the more trad choccies. Cards, yes had them too, but nothing really 'turns me on' at Valentine's. Just glad it's all behind me.

There are always exceptions..:)

But my point being that apart from red roses it was never really a big "day" in the UK as far as marketing went.

The UK might not celebrate very many holidays or take them to extremes, but here in the U.S. Just about everyday is a holiday.

Today for example, Jan.29th is Freethinkers day and Bubble wrap appreciation day.

So everyone, remember to grab your bubble wrap and start popping today. :D :D :D

If by chance you think I'm making it all up, you can check the official calender here:

http://www.brownielocks.com/month2.html

As for putting stuff out too early for holidays. I always thought so too, until I went to work in retail. It can't be putting it out too early when customers flock in to buy it early. It's the customers that dictate when stuff goes on the floor for sale. No retailer is going to waste space on a product that doesn't sale. So if I put Christmas out in September and customers buy it, then, from then on, Christmas will go out in September or even earlier yet.

Why do you think retailers have Christmas in July Sales? Because Customers buy stuff for Christmas in the July Sale. It's wierd. American's have a gentic need to shop. :D :D :D

I LOVE a nice quiet dinner at some off the path cafe, then off to watch a movie. I enjoy making a whole night of it, but keeping it "low key" enough so that I can spend quality time with whomever I'm with.

I find that it makes up for the fact that I don't eat sweets LoL

Being a chocoholic, that's my choice, especially the dark chocolates. But I also have another Valentine present, my cats were born on Valentine's day. That's quite a present, better than......no, not quite that good, but almost. :D

Heck yeah, second (in my opinion, I prefer the sugary candy) only to November 1, when the Halloweed candy goes on sale.

Well, for me Valentine's is just any other day. Another overcommercialized Hallmark holiday. I like being intimate with Sarah every day, not just when my calendar tells me to. On the other hand, it is a good excuse to go out and do something together. We're going to go to a nice Italian restaurant and eat and talk. And then probably cuddle up and talk some more afterward.

Which should be nice. This is the first Valentine's I've spent with someone else.

I've never really felt it. When I was a kid, my mother would get me a box of valentines to give out to girls in my class, and I would carefully use only the ones that said "Happy Valentine's Day" rather than "Be my valentine".

the over-abundance of red and pink colors...I don't like it XP

edit: it's funny I say this and my icon is just that. I think I mean more along the lines of, it's not just one pretty picture, it's everywhere on anything, from streamers to cards to candy, waaaay too much abuse of those colors

What does Valentine's Day feel like? For me it is feeling like an outcast, bitter and lonely and wishing the holiday never existed because I think it's stupid. (Aren't I nice and depressing today?)

I used to hate it like that too...then I just made it an excuse to pamper myself extra that day. I haven't had a valentine yet either, but I think one day I will, and I'll say he owes me for being late finding me, lol.

The only time I liked Valentine's Day was in elementary school when we made mailboxes out of shoeboxes and everybody had to give everybody else in the class a card. Nowadays I just ignore it.

I find that valentines day is a day to be extra nice to people, give out candy, and go more out of your way for someone.

You made the last Valentine's Day the best one I've ever had.

Spending time with a good friend was just the perfect way to spend it, even if it was only on-line.

Yeah, I know it's past, but I decided to join in anyway. Valentine's Day has no meaning for me, never has. I don't get upset about not getting any valentines because I neither expect nor want any, nor am I bitter about the holiday or down on it for being 'stupid' simply because it has relevance to me. Sure it's overcommercialised, but what isn't these days? Doesn't mean people shouldn't get to have it as a holiday.

Also the day before is my birthday, so that just eclipses the whole thing anyway :P

I did provide a show for a restaurant full of people this V-day though. I was in an unfamiliar town by myself, went into town to get myself some dinner (completely forgetting it was Valentines day until it eventually clicked that all the restaurants seemed to be awfully full). An ATM ate my bank card, so I was stranded in a foreign town with only the cash I had on me (about $25), several hundred kilometres from home and not set to go home for another couple of days. So I was upset, and got a little teary. So here's me, by myself, in a restaurant on Valentines day, clearly upset, and on my phone every ten minutes or so (trying to work out with my parents some way of getting me more money, but onlookers wouldn't know that). I can only imagine how it looked to all those other people.

I only liked that because we didn't have to do school work and we usually got a cupcake on that day. The deal with the cards just turned the day into a mini peoples'-choice awards.

Nowadays...I had to laugh because now the kids HAVE to give a card to EVERYONE in the class. If you're gonna' give one, dammit you have to give to EVERYONE! Does this mean on someone's birthday they have to sing to the rest of the class too?

Ok, I'm late too..lol..but would like to add my thoughts. To me, Valentine's Day is a symbol of love. Weither it's through a card, phone call or visit...it gives me an extra opportunity to let all the people in my life know that I love and appreciate them.

Chocolate, preferably chocolate covered strawberries

This year I went out to eat for dinner with my best friend, watched a semi-romantic film with my roommate, and hung out later with another friend.

My best Valentine's Day was going to a rock concert and crowd surfing.

But, Valentine's Day just isn't Valentine's Day for me without chocolate.

It used to be chocolate, but this this Valentine's was very different. This was the first Valentine's in which I've 1) had a boyfriend, and 2) known about my asexuality. As such, this year I bought cards for my boyfriend, my parents, and my three best friends to let them all know that I care.

So that's what makes me feel Valentines. Sharing the love!
