Dargon
Seems it did, looks like a full weeks worth of posts just dissappeared. Is it possable to do automated daily backups or anything?
str8fuknpimpin
:( really man....that'd be cool..
tallfreak
A daily backup really should be done. There are so many posts and good info that is just gone!!! And I was no longer a newbie, or junior member and made it to member :x
Goonie
Don't post anymore please! it won't do any good
birdnerd
Ugh... people have way too much time on their hands to hack forums and delete things. Shouldn't they, like, go play outside or pick up trash off the side of the highway or something?
Orbit
poodoo... *grumps*
Nugan
Gah, again? :(
smellincoffee
Don't post anymore please! it won't do any good We amoebas don't capitulate, we replicate! In all seriousness, assuming the hacker has manevolent tendecies (part of the evil sexual conspiracy) and isn't just doing this out of boredom, then ceasing posting here would only make them happy. So let's do our best to piss them off. October 16th wasn't too bad a day.
spinneret
October 16th wasn't too bad a day. But the huge PDX meetup was this weekend! And all the stuff we posted about it is gone  Goonie, are we gonna get restored to the more recent backup? (if we do, I realize anything we post now is gonna get lost. THAT doesn't concern me in the least.
AVENguy
This is REALLY frustrating. As some of you know, while we recoverd quickly from the attack on Friday several of the foreign language forums did not. I've spent a good chunk of the weekend e-mailing and calling tech support at our hosting provider to no avail. I talked to them today right around when this problem occurred. It looks like what happened (subsequent conversations with them have confirmed this) is that when I said "restore the french, portugese and polish forums from backups" the guy on the other end decided to go ahead and restore all of them without asking or telling me. Needless to say I'm pretty steamed, though we don't have the option of switching hosting providers right now.
Damien Day
Oh, so there wasn't a 2nd attack, it was just due to human error. Anyway, this means that we really need to have daily backups so as to minimise the effect of these attacks.
spinneret
Thanks, DJ. It's good to know we didn't get hacked again, at least. Man, how annoying. But thank you so much for the time and energy you're putting into it. I know you're working hard to keep AVEN going in general, and especially when things go wrong. We do appreciate it. Amcan
Glad we didn't hacked DJ but darn service provider.
brian_w
It's frustrating I know DJ, but thanks for your work in getting things back up, even if the Service Provider fouled up on this latest problem.. As spinneret said, it is appreciated.
Maz
Especially frustrating for me because I keep the german board as secure as possible. We have got 0 Spambot accounts and I wanted to install extra sec. mods soon, but that doesn't seem to make much sense now. Whatever I do is void if the standards are not the same everywhere on the server. As the database file is to large for a working backup using the functions in the admin panel and we don't have access to phpmyadmin etc. I have absolutely no possibility of creating backups of the german board on my own, that I could use in such cases. the guy on the other end decided to go ahead and restore all of them without asking or telling me. Seems he failed with that aswell, frensh, polish and italian boards are still down...
reptilelover
I suppose it is too much to expect some sort of compensation for such a dazzling show of incompetence is it? How difficult can it be to restore one forum without affecting another one? Especially if one is supposed to be a “specialist”… :x And just out of curiosity – is it safe to post or do we again expect any unpleasant surprises in the near future? :? spielzeug
so we did loose more than 2 weeks this year, always because of the lack of sufficient backups :( this is even more worse than this timeouts we have since new server is not well configured
Orbit
Thanks for all your efforts DJ.
Hallucigenia
Wow, what a weekend for me to be away. @_____@ I just want to echo all the other people who have been thanking DJ for all the work he does for us despite dumb stuff like this that happens. That is all.
LonePiper
So, I imagine it's a pretty stupid question to ask if the service providers made any backups just before they "restored" the forums?? Like of what was there already? What peeves me most, though, is that it really makes me feel like not bothering. Like, I'll look at a topic and think "I already posted my thougts here. I don't want to repeat them"
KAGU143
Why do we not have the option of switching service providers? I would think that that should be a pretty obvious first step to take if their service is so unreliable. -GB
LostPenguin
If it's anything like most webhosts, there's probably a contract for a certain period of time.. I'm stuck with a lousy webhost that wiped all of its servers and didn't have a single backup for the majority of the sites on said servers because I've still got 5 months left in my contract. I could leave, but I'd still have to pay for those 5 months.
KAGU143
Maybe it would be something like leasing an apartment for a year? In theory, you can't move out before the year ends unless you pay for the entire year. In reality, if the apartment manager failed to maintain the unit in a liveable condition you could walk, and there wouldn't be a court in the US that would convict you. Indeed, if the management tried to prosecute they might stand to lose even more because they could, in theory, end up paying legal fees as well as all of the moving expenses which THEIR negligence forced you to incur. What I'm saying is that, with leases involving physical space, the lessor has responsibilities too, not just the lessee. It seems reasonable that a similar system should apply to leases involving internet space. -GB
Orbit
It has a happy ending after the credits... sort of. *L*
AVENguy
Unfortunately we don't have any backups to restore from the past day or two. I'll look into getting refunded for some of our service bills, but I'd rather not create a negative relationship with our hosting provider (our last provider decided they didn't like us and essentially kicked us off for no reason.) Crowskin
Speaking as one of the new members who registered at a really bad time.. there are probably a bunch of us who got mysteriously deleted with whatever hacking attack or miscalculation there was with the board. I did and I just re-registered but I wonder if there were any more newbies who sort of got lost in the shuffle. *retakes my portion of the rafters and perches* Boy, right when you get a comfy spot, someone has to go and delete you right out of the rafters :( -Crow
deladangerous
I was concerned about that too, Crowskin. Good to see you cared enough to re-register, though. It..uh.. shows initiative. :) [directed at all accidentally deleted people:] Hey! Come back and try again! We still like you!!
Crowskin
Lol, well I'm nothing if not.. initiative? *wears that as a button* :) -Crow
