Hi, I'm Robin. I've recently been trying to become more active in promoting asexual visibility and education within my community. I would like to have a small group of people march in the Denver Pride Parade, which is in June. I already have a group of 8 people eager to march, half of which identify as asexual. However, I have never marched in any parade before and I don't have any ideas about how to proceed in planning this.

Does anyone have an advice or ideas on what to hand out, what phrases to chant, and/or what types of signs to carry in the parade?

Any help at all will be much appreciated.

Heya!

Some bits of advice from my own experiences at pride:

First, go to the pride website and see what kind of application and training you need to have a contingent march in the parade - requirements vary, but it's best to start as soon as possible. You may also need people to volunteer to do a simple safety training for the group.

If it costs money, you may also want to look into fundraising - which can be as simple as everyone chipping in $15 or something, or you can have a bakesale, or take donations, or anything else.

Regarding signs: in San Francisco, we've used giant letter balloons spelling out ASEXY which was a lot of fun, in addition to a basic banner to carry in front of us that said "asexuality.org"

We also had a couple flags to spin around or wear as capes. I'll come back and list some other clever slogans I've seen later when I remember them.

As for chants, I still don't know many really good one's, but we've used "Who's asexy? We're asexy! Who's asexy? You're asexy!" It was usually loud enough that no one could hear us unless we got a megaphone.

Another really fun thing to do if you can is to get matching shirts - they make you look unified and make for great souveneirs! You can usually get them custom made if everyone chips in 10-15$ or so.

For handouts: paper handouts are easiest and cheapest (and we have templates you can print or use as examples). However, stickers are a lot more fun - I can link you some examples if you're interested. Stickers are my personal favorites.

I'll be popping in with more advice as I think of it; feel free to ask any questions! I'm also getting ready to gear up for SF pride, so if you want to share resources (like sticker designs or anything) or planning or fundraising ideas I'd love to talk more.

Hi Robin, do you need any more marchers?

I live in Denver and would be happy to help. My main job is working events so I'm definitely able to help with planning or anything else. Let me know!

Thanks!

Christina

We should organize something for 2014. I'll post something in the Colorado thread of the Meetup forums.

Haven't decided for sure if I'll go to PrideFest in Denver again this year, (still a bit early, it is only April LOL...but deff considering going on one or both days)

I noticed that this year they are for once not having PrideFest on the same weekend as Fathers day... that means I'm even more likely to go....

If you wish to discuss details for the 2014 pride, please create a new thread. Thank you. :)
