I love this song it's in Swedish: Flickan och Kråkan (The girl and the crow) with Swedish lyrics. It's a very sad song yet it's powerful. It's about a child fighting to save a life even though is hopeless. The entire song is the about hopelessness both children and adults feel. (I think. I'm not good with metaphors, maybe the entire song is a metaphor I'm too dense to get.)

And this one is a Swedish classic: Vandraren (The wanderer) It's one of my absolute favorites.

A name is required

somthing very old in hebrew (many israelis will not even now it) :

something very very old in yiddish (it's a lullaby that even my grandma used to sing to me)

and something more modern, that most israelis would know and consider a classic

I didn't know people still spoke Irish. I used to have a pen-pal when I was in elementary school who was Irish. She taught me some words (hell if I remember) but she also said they weren't teaching Irish in school anymore, only English. I hope things have changed and that this beautiful language is being taught still. Leaving it to oral tradition only would be a mistake, in my opinion.

Nice song you posted ^_^

irish is still a mandatory subject in the leaving certificate, although there are exceptions available.

there is this article in 2011 asking whether it should still be http://www.thejournal.ie/poll-should-leaving-cert-irish-still-be-compulsory-81762-Feb2011/

and now in japanese

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ravnctVJlgE&fmt=18

please put your volumes down for the start of the song as the start is pretty heavy.

yana veva (the singer) sings in idiosyncratic language

(An idioglossia is an idiosyncratic language invented and spoken by only one person or very few people. Most often, idioglossia refers to the "private languages" of young children, especially twins, the latter being more specifically known as cryptophasia, and commonly referred to as twin talk or twin speech.) ^_^ ^_^

Is it really possible we don't have a thread for this? :o

Please share songs you really really like in your own language (or another one)! If you feel like posting a translation to English, that's cool too, but not necessary!

Today I'm obsessing (again, not the first time) on the Italian version of The Circle of Life, which is the only one I knew growing up. It is really beautiful and I prefer it to the English one (which doesn't happen often).

Here I give you the translation to English:

The Circle of Life

[MS: Male Singer]

[bS: Background Singer]

[FS: Female Singer (lead)]

[MS:] Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [There comes a lion]

[bS:] Sithi uhhmm ingonyama [Oh yes, it's a lion]

[MS:] Nants ingonyama bagithi baba [There comes a lion]

[bS:] Sithi uhhmm ingonyama [Oh yes, it's a lion]

Ingonyama

[MS:] Siyo Nqoba [We're going to conquer]

[bS:] Ingonyama

Ingonyama nengw' enamabaal [it's a lion and a tiger]

[repeats 5]

Ingonyama nengw' enamabala (Se-to-kwa!)

Ingonyama nengw' enamabala (Asana)

[repeats 1]

(yes, that's the same, surprised? :P )

And one day you realize you exist

That you are part of the world as well

Not out of your own choice

And you wonder why

We're here, because of whose will?

Then a sunray 'hugs' you,

And your eyes get coloured with blue

And that's enough for you

Every doubt goes away

And the whys don't exist anymore

It's a merry-go-round

This life that spins with us

And never stops

And every life knows

That it will be reborn

In a flower

Which will never end*

(*repeat twice)

There is another part of song in the non-Disney version, but I prefer this one.

Come on you all non-English people! Post your favourite non-English songs!

Thank you... so much for sharing this! I can't believe how beautiful it sounds in Italian, and how deep the lyrics are. I love the English version as well (of course, being raised on it) but I'm really impressed with the depth of the lyrics.
