New Italian Article on Asexuality!

Hello everyone!

I hope you're not tired of my updates from this tiny country that is Italy

So, the history: a few months ago, right after the La Stampa article, we got a boom of requests from medias (I posted about 2 radio interviews here on AVEN, more is on AVEN Italy), including a freelance journalist who wanted to make an article with a video interview. I wasn't in the right area of the country, so I could only help with looking for people willing to participate.

After several months, I thought maybe the people I put her in contact with had changed their mind and nothing was ever done, or that the piece simply was never published. I'm very happy to stand corrected ^_^

She allowed me to translate it and post it here for you all, and for this I thank her :cake:

BREAK POINT

by Giulia Pezzolesi

Living without sex is better, journey into the world of asexuals

Wednesday, June 19th 2013 - 07:50:00

A desire to challenge. A desire of trying a new way. A desire to make it. Stories of people who want to break reality to re-build it. In their own way. This is what "BREAK POINT" is about, posted by Giulia Pezzolesi, journalist, lover of horses, expensive bags and Martini with ice, allergic to falsehood and to those who try to impose their ways on her...

"I like cuddling, holding hands, kissing each other, caressing. To me, these are not a prelude to making love. That *is* making love." The words of an asexual strike and they do it even more when we meet Luke, we'll call him with a fancy name. Luke is a thirty year old like many others, he works, travels, has a social life made up of friends and girlfriends. The only thing that is missing in his life is sex.

Luke is part of that group of people who call themselves "asexual." What he says is straightforward: he doesn't feel the need to have sex or even to masturbate and this is normal for him. Asexual people express intimacy by talking and sharing their joys, fears and secrets. For many of them making love means sharing their interests and working toward common goals. Since they are not interested in sex, asexuals do not see the lack of sexual desire as a problem to be corrected. Many focus their energy in other types of excitements and pleasure.

"I just do not feel sexual attraction for people. I love the human form, and I consider people like works of art and find them aesthetically pleasing, but I never want to have sexual contact, not even with the most beautiful person." These are the words of an asexual girl. Her desire for a loving relationship with no physical contact is clear.

A reality that still few people know and are able to fully understand. When we refer to asexuality, we could talk about a real sexual orientation, such as gays and lesbians. Studies done in the 80s and 90s on samples of rodents and sheep have shown that it is not so strange that mammals show an asexual behavior. Among these groups of animals about 12% of the males showed no sexual interest in females.

In a world where sexuality is promoted as the norm, many asexuals grow up thinking to be somewhat sick, dysfunctional or incomplete. Society is not aware of this reality, so most of them decides to stay in the shadows, like Luke. There is still no information on the subject despite various Italian and French websites.

The only certain thing is that asexual people, like everyone else, need love, a tender love, platonic love, mental love, call it what you want, but it's always love we're talking about.

It's interesting that she found Italian and French websites, and not English ones? Where did AVEN go? :o

I like this article ^_^

It's short because it's half written and half video, and while it doesn't mention aromantics, it's certainly not thought to be a full explanation of asexuality. Just a short intro, and I think it's done very well :cake:

I've posted this on AVENit as well - I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's all that good, either. I dunno, the video in itself makes me... sad? The person isn't even shown (for privacy reasons, I guess) and doesn't talk about asexuality all that clearly. Towards the end, he mentions a girl having tried to come out and failed at that. Plus, whoever wrote the article didn't check AVEN for definitions (and they're imprecise in more than one snippet) and didn't link back to it, not even mention it, which doesn't help much, at all.

Anyway, that's just me whining and comparing Italian media to international media. I wish we could have something like the Huffington Post six-parter even around the Mediterranean seas. <_<

Well, I think I should clarify that most Italian aces are, as of now, really against the idea of going on camera. The journalist offered this as an option, which I think was very kind of her :)

As far as AVEN goes, the journalist wasn't in contact with me through AVEN, but through asessuali.it where I'm editor when I have time. I mentioned AVEN once in our emails, but not linking to AVEN isn't a big deal to me. This is one of the few articles that do not outright call asexual people "those who choose virginity" or something along those lines <_<

People reading the article can google and find us ^_^
