So I think of myself as pretty much genderless but I have a female body. I have worn my hair pretty short for almost all of my life, and I guess I don't like longer hair on myself because it makes me look too much like what a woman is supposed too look like in a lot of people's minds.

I'm interested in how the rest of AVEN is wearing their hair and why, if you want to give an explanation.

PS: I took the gender terms from this list, so if anything is missing or wrong, please let me know. Also, this is my first poll, so if anything doesn't make sense or doesn't work, please let me know as well.

I'm female bodied, not sure what my gender identity is, but I put bigender. I have long hair. I did get my hair cut short earlier this year, but oddly enough, I thought I looked more feminine than I did before getting my hair cut short. Maybe, it's because I went for a bob cut instead of a pixie cut or something. But yeah, I let my hair grow and I don't think I'll ever get my hair cut short again.

Female bodied, somewhere on the fluidity spectrum, androgyny is preferred.

I keep my hair short, usually to where it'll stick up on its own. It's getting too long and needs to be cut. .-.

Male-bodied, bigender/fluid identity, mildly androgynous presentation, including relatively long hair. My hair is stylish, reaches down to about the largest vertebra on my neck, above my shoulders/clavicle in the back, and down past my chin/jaw on the sides, and about down to my upper lip in the front. I guess one can describe it as an androgynous Beatles cut from around the middle of their career (longer than Hard Days Night, but much shorter than Abbey Road). Eventually, I want to have hair that reaches to around my shoulders, but that is still a ways away, considering by this time last year, my hair reaches only the center of my ears on the sides, my upper eyelids in the front, and about the back of my skull/start of my neck in the back. My ever-growing hair is meant to be a means for which to express my genderqueer identity.

Female, long hair. Never worn it any other way *shrugs* Short hair sounds more convenient but my hair is sorta part of my identity at this point...

Female bodied- I feel comfortable saying I am a female but I have a male mind.

I have short (stereotypical boy-length) but side parted with it a little longer on one side for a side bang, which I straighten usually. I want it shorter.

I'm female-bodied, though I consider myself relatively genderless in the sense that I don't really give a damn about my gender. I have extremely long hair, past my butt at the moment with no intention of letting it stop growing, and it usually stays in a braid unless it's a special occasion because, much as I love it, I hate my hair getting in my face.

Trigender (used to think I was Agender but have come to the conclusion that I'm actually Trigender)

I've a female body but thankfully, even though I'm very short, I have always had a very androgynous appearance. I wear my hair short because I regard long hair as impractical, not me, and annoying. I've been doing so since I was three.

Short hair, identify as female. I like it short because I don't have to spend much time on it. I'm still obliged to wear a hair net at work though (I work with open food).

*Cut it myself when it starts getting a bit too long - a pair of hairdressing scissors was one of the best investments I ever made. It's a bit frightening the first time but after that, you just think 'Ah what the heck, it'll grown agin :D ' *

I'd love to be able to cut my own hair - that would be so much cheaper and no more strangers fussing about my head.

Female with long hair, I love putting it up and making it look fancy (but then, I do hair for a living...most of my clients aren't strangers to me anymore, so that's pretty cool). As for gender identity, I like being female and looking the part. I'm not as stringent on the roles (although when it came to roofing the house, I was happy to let the men do it).

Female bodied as for my gender identity its not something I´ve ever given much thought to. At this point in my life its not something I´m personally concerned with defining. As for my hair its slight above shoulder-length and wavy and layered and although I mostly like it like that its kind of boring in so much I guess because its been that way for awhile..

I'm the same way in regards to gender. I used to have my hair past my butt for about 3 years, but the maintenance was such a nightmare (I also wasn't allowed to cut it, but I don't like to talk about that). Now it's about halfway down my ribcage. It's a perfect length for me, I think.

I don't spend much time on my hair either-I just wash it, rinse it and comb it.

I'm female, and I have short hair. I used to wear it long when I was in elementary school, but my hair is extremely thick and I would get a headache from the weight of it when swimming or taking a bath, so I got it cut short to my shoulders and kept it around there for a few years, then got it cut short-short for summer camp one year and I've kept it that way since. I still have difficulty getting all the shampoo out when I shower so for me there's no other option at this point, but it's also so much cooler and easier to manage than long hair was so I like it :)

I generally go through a phase where I'll grow my hair to around belly button length, want something different and cut it short. I'll then immediately miss my long hair and spend the next several years growing it out again. It's currently nearing the bottom of my rib cage, though you can't tell when it's dry because it's so gosh darn wavy.

I'm a bit of an odd bird in that I find long hair easier to maintain. Yes, it takes longer to wash, but with short hair I have to brush and style, whereas long hair I just throw it into a ponytail and I'm good to go.

Yeah, I can understand that too. When I had long hair I almost always tied it in a ponytail. Now, I have it cut as short as I can convince my stylist to go (she seems concerned that I'll "look like a boy" XD. When I go for a haircut, I compensate by always wearing a dress and nice makeup, to reassure her), and go through a period of gelling and styling it everyday. That's definitely my favorite look, but it is a bit of work. When it grows out a little bit, I hardly have to do a thing! But when it gets so long I have an emo sweep in front of my eyes, it's time for a haircut.

I have long hair and I identify myself as female and metalhead. :-D According to some people I still look like a boy.

Dame Helen Mirren claims to cut her own hair too. Bend over and sweep your hair into a pony tail on top of your head then just cut straight across as close (or far away) from the scalp as you want to go (not too close the first time). Then you just have to tidy the odd lengths up. If you want a bit of a fringe, leave that bit of hair out of the pony tail or the fringe will be very short...yeh, forgot about that this time :)

Thanks for the detailed description, but my hair is really short, like shaved in the back and very short at the sides with a little longer hair on top (a bit like Tilda Swinton, but shorter), and there's no way to get this done myself.

PS: Helen Mirren is perhaps the most stylish and best looking older actress around, so it would be really cool if she did her hair herself.

I am a longhaired female but I tend to think like a man.

I think I look awful with short hair.

Female-bodied and identified, and I much prefer myself with long hair because I constantly just chuck it in a braid and am done with it. When it's short it's always in my eyes and such.

Female, currently short hair, but I'll probably let it grow longer. I had short hair most of the time before college, then I went through the cycles of growing my hair for 1-2 years -- cutting it short -- growing longer again. So I've never had super long hair. I think that's difficult to maintain. And when I've had long hair for a while, I'll get bored and want to switch back to short hair, especially in summer.

When I have long hair, I usually tie it in a pony tail, sometimes two pig tails (which makes me look super young :D).

I alternate between getting buzzcuts and actually having a short (fairly classic and mainstream looking) styled cut. So it hasn't been long for ages. As a kid (around 8-9) I actually had it down to almost shoulder-length at one point, but that was the longest ever.

Genderqueer (voted -fluid as that's closest) and wear my hair long... where it still grows (my hairline is speedily receding... I'll be looking much like a brunette version of RHPS' Riff Raff soon. *sigh* )

I'm female and currently wear it long. I'm actually trying to grow up longer, down to at least my waist but I can't say it isn't challenging in some ways. I used to have short hair in primary school/high school, which I hated, so I'm trying to make up for it now that I'm older and stuff.

I'm female. I've had my hair all kinds of ways...but currently it's short enough to spike in the back (though I'm always too lazy to spike it) and the front I keep long and parted to the side and also dyed (purple atm.) Although the back of my hair grows like crazy and I have to keep getting it cut every couple of months or so, but the front...never seems to get any longer. O.o Which sucks...because I want it to be longer! (Right now its about an inch or so below my jaw bone.) *sigh*
