me wanna go to med school.

:P

Cool, do you plan to specialise or just general practice?

I was a medical scientist until a recent career change. Less money now, but more serenity ^_^ So I guess it all evens out in the end!

Haha no, it appears that one must be a execrable writer to make a generous living from it these days, as Fifty Shades of Grey so amply demonstrates. To be fair, I must admit I have not read the trilogy but the excerpts I have seen on snarky blogs are putrid enough! :D

I graduated with my Bachelor's in Civil Engineering in spring 2011. I was lucky enough to get a job with the US Army Corps of Engineers during my sophomore summer and I worked there throughout college. After I graduated I was offered a full time job and things have been going pretty well (if a little boring) since.

I'm an auditor. It's the dark side of accounting.

Beware!! Oo-ooo-ooooooooo

Come to the dark side. We have cookies! :D

I'm a filmmaker. I've heard it said that I'm a "professional," but I'm not entirely sure where I fall in terms of this pole.

I'm in my second year of University right now, but I'm looking to eventually go to grad school for either clinical or counselling psychology. I'm leaning more towards counselling though, so I can work with kids in schools. I really like working with children, since I teach swimming lessons right now and I've worked at summer camps for a few years now, but I don't think I could actually be a teacher. I'm fascinated by the human mind, so combining my interests definitely seems to be the way to go. That's a ways away though, so I'm hoping I can stick it out.

If you like both psychology and children (especially if you like young children), developmental psychology may be a good choice too, although it's probably more research-oriented.

I'm a psychology student too. I'd like to find a teaching job at a college, but if I somehow found a non-professional job I wouldn't mind either, as long as I enjoy it somewhat. :)

I'm pursuing three equally impractical degrees, so I can eventually become a professor. I just want to stay in school forever~

Me too, but just the one degree ^_^

I was looking into that as well, and I'm actually taking my first developmental psych course next semester. I'm not 100% certain if research is the way I wanna go, but I'm hoping to do a little bit of undergrad research next year. So if the course and the research turn out to be sufficiently interesting it might just sway me.

I haven't really decided what I'm going to do with my degree yet, but I do find the field fascinating. I want to study people in hopes of maybe grasping a better understanding of them.

Ex-professional here...

Studied Computer Science at uni, was a software engineer for 10 years. Burned out in a similar fashion to Peter Gibbons from "Office Space", minus the massive embezzlement from my last employer. laugh.gif

Kinda between careers now and working as a kitchen assistant in a function centre. Not 100% sure where I'll go next, but probably some form of "practical work", rather than going back to classic office-based "knowledge work" of any sort. In other words, I'm not a professional any more and chances are I won't be again, per se. I just don't see myself sitting in a cubicle pushing buttons all day, ever again. I came to the conclusion some time ago that - despite being an "intellectual" person - I simply can't do "knowledge work" for someone else.

I love Office Space! I watched it last weekend :D Please never change

Professional? I think? wacko.gif As in, I've finished studying Archaeology and I'm looking for a job as a Field Archaeologist smile.gif

I hardly think digging around in the dirt counts :p but you do win the award for the coolest job on the thread ^_^

Booo hiss  I'm an accountant too

Can't I be both a professional and studying for the next level up? XD Currently working full-time (finally!!) as a professional via my bachelor's degree, and studying long-term for my master's degree. I love academia too much. Not really thinking at the moment too much about what to do post-graduate school. I may move to a different department in my current company or seek out another position elsewhere. It all depends on how I feel down the road... Keeping my options open, woo! :cake:

I'm a professional mental patient, does that count? Seriously, the Canadian government pays me because I'm insane.

ph34r.gif

Technically, if I applied, I could get disability for my Major Depression and General Anxiety. (The only reason I haven't is because I don't want to abuse it when I have an income and live at home.) Does that mean I have the potential to be a professional?

I voted professional.

I got a BFA in Graphic Design and worked at a newspaper doing ads for a while. I ended up getting laid off when the economy crashed (remember when the bigger newspapers all had trouble). I really was kind of bored doing graphic design only and missed doing things like math. I went back to school to get a Bachelor of Science in Computer Info Systems. I now work as a Web Developer at an insurance company - doing both graphic work and programming. Going back to school was one of the best decisions I made because I really like my job and the company I work for.

So yes, I consider myself a professional.

omg that's funny the movie "Office Space" was mentioned. I just watched that for the first time a few hours ago! The people at work all all into it (and red staplers) so they wanted me to watch it so I'll understand their jokes.

One guy at work actually just got a talking bobble-head of the red stapler guy on his desk! lol

I have a degree to work as a high school math teacher, I'm actually currently working as a weaving assistant and as a chess teacher, and I'm about to take a course to become a certified nurses' assistant.

I don't know how to answer your question.

Being very positive: I'd like to become a researcher in social psychology.

Not so positive: I'm not sure if I'll ever have enough energy to go to graduate school. Also, research tends to involve teamwork and I'm not willing to work with other people. TBH, I'd rather spend the rest of my life playing video games and reading books / random pages from Wikipedia.

I'm studying to get my Bachelor's in Psychology. I'll go for my Masters, I feel it will give me an edge, hopefully, since I'm older. I'm interested in ecopsychology. My room mate/ex-partner just finished her Bachelors in Criminal Justice. We moved to Albany, NY and after well over 60 resumes (I'm not exaggerating) she got a job with benefits at Time Warner Cable, selling packages.

Is anybody out there working in the field they went to school for? Just curious. I've read that IT is wide open for women right now because, surprisingly, the women-to-men ratio in this field is low. Many companies are attempting to recruit women. Anybody in education? I'm just curious about the economy and employment in different fields versus racking up the student loans.

So many fellow computer people here! I feel like I'm in good company :o

Currently at my second bachelor's year in computer engineering. Totally planning on getting a master's degree too, possibly specialising in cryptography and computer security.

how are you defining profession/professional here?

I was hoping people wouldn't ask awkward questions... smile.gif

I would say it's something you have to study to become (medicine/doctor, law/lawyer, architecture/architect etc etc) and requires a specific qualification.

Okay, in that case I am a professional x2.

Chose "professional", but I don't really fit any of those categories- I'm semi retired after 30+ years in my field, so am more of a "post-professional". :)
