SleepIncarnate
Ok, let me first explain my train of thought on this process. It's a sad fact that many trans people (especially trans women) are forced into some form of sex work just to survive in society. Stripping, prostitution, porn, phone sex, all of them. I know a few personally who've had to do it. Transsexuality and asexuality seem to be roughly equal in prevalence (1-3% ish) and there seems to be some overlap (like me). Considering the state of the economy and the atmosphere out there today towards trans folks (getting better but still far from adequate let alone equal), it's a worry I find myself in sometimes, having been homeless once before. Thing is, I'd have no clue what I was doing there. I doubt I could be a decent stripper or phone sex operator, as I have no idea how to be "sexy" for others. And prostitution and porn are both kind of... well, without being into it, I doubt I'd have employment long. I'm not antisexual, I'm just very blase about the topic as a whole. It's completely foreign to me. How would an asexual actually fare in these fields? Is it even possible for them to do so? Doesn't have to be someone trans, can be any asexual. I know there are some aces who actually like sex and have a libido, but there's plenty others of us who could care less or are actively opposed to sex.
JJButterworth
Well, I guess it depends on the person. Being "sexy" has a lot to do with confidence, so anyone can do it. I think that an asexual would fair no better or worse as a sex worker. I would assume that sex workers are not attracted to most of their clients and have to work around that. newgirl
I've talk to an asexual BDSM dominatrix who was paid to dominate men. This women asexuality didn't get in the way of doing her job because intercourse wasn't involved
SleepIncarnate
I can see that with the Dominatrix, and if I ever had to resort to sex work, I think I'd be a pro sub or pro Domme. But I dunno, the whole concept of sex work to me is just so foreign and weird. I can't be the only one.
The Great WTF
There are a few strippers that I know that sit more towards the asexual end of the spectrum and, as JJ said, a lot of it seems to be more about confidence than anything else. Acting sexy is no different than any other form of acting. You just learn the motions and behaviors like any other stage role. For the record, my friends love their job and do it because it's something they really enjoy. Most of the sex workers I know do their jobs because they pay better and because it's fun for them, not because they've been forced into it. One of my good friends, this shy little mouse of a girl, ended up doing amateur night at a small local strip club and found herself having a ton of fun up on stage. She's a leading act at a major club here in Vegas now and says she wouldn't trade it for the world. The ironic part? She's still a virgin and happy to stay that way.
Wobot
I don't think someone who was sex repulsed would be able to manage very well as a prostitute (though I think someone who's indifferent probably could), but I think a phone sex operator or working as a stripper I can see that maybe working out because it doesn't involve actually having sex or touching. And really, being sexy is all junk you can learn if you really want to. I used to nude model, although that was more artsy than sexy... But I think knowing how to pole dance would be cool! I don't think I've got the coordination for that though.
VanishingLady
I'm not surprised that there are sex workers that would tend to the asexual end of the scale. For those who consider asexuality more of a learned/experiential behavior it makes sense...you get to the point where you do it so much (with many people you wouldn't want touching you otherwise) you start to turn off to it. There are huge holes in that logic, but that's the thinking. I would prefer to work from home (it's amazing how many people don't want to hire someone who's voice-challenged, no matter their stellar qualifications, but that's another thing entirely) and I can write one hell of an erotic story. I'm strongly considering becoming a sex chat operator (actually it's affiliate marketing) but as I look into it there's that difference between writing a story and interacting with someone in a chat room. Especially since much of what seems to turn others on is...ugh...to me. I know I can remain detached, but...I'm not a good actress. My fantasies are way off what seems to get the sales.
