Still a citizen of Austria but I was socialized as a German but also I don't really feel any emotional ties to Germany yet Austrians always assume I was German so.... If someone asks me where I am from I never really know what is the honest answer lmao.

(Out of convenience I often say Germany tho just to avoid the Austria =/= Australia accident XD)

I can relate to that. The only language that I've learnt to the level of being able to have an unimpeded spoken conversation is English, although even in that case I have very few opportunities for that, so my speech is often halting.

I studied German, French and Spanish in school (either elementary, secondary or at uni) but, again, very little practice (and, in the case of German and French, active dislike) has made it so that I wouldn't risk having a full-blown spoken conversation. I studied Italian mostly on my own, and it's probably the only one of those four that I feel somewhat confident in. Overall though, I'm not much of a talker, even in my native Polish.

Aren't people in Canada required by law to learn French in school? I realise that it may not be much use if you move farther west, beyond the traditionally predominantly French-speaking areas, though.
