There was a poll about this a long time ago, but it seems to have vanished.

Just in case you don't know, an extrovert is a person who tends to be outgoing, gregarious and to make friends easily.

Introverts tend to be more reserved (shy), enjoy solitary activities, and have a tendency to dislike crowds.

A lot of people fall somewhere in between the two extremes, but most will have leanings one way or the other. If you aren't sure just pick the one that seems closest, and then explain how you differ.

I am definitely introverted. I am quite talkative with my friends, close friends, but I generally tend to be much more comfortable when I am with individuals, rather than when I am in crowds. I like being in groups I am comfortable with, but if it is peopel I don't know I can't really stand it. I hate being in public (especially in crowded cafeterias). I am terrible with small talk, it makes me feel very uncomfortable when I feel forced around people. I can't be myself unless I am really comfortable (sadly). I hate when my more extroverted friends take me around places with tons of people they know, I feel so small and just dreadful. I get really melancholy around people I don't know, and don't feel I would really click with. I am bad with public speaking and I can't speak to authority figures (like teachers). I generally don't speak unless spoken to, and then it's just one word answers. I can't go very long without having self-time.

But inside, I'm terribly terribly social. And many of my friends are surprised to hear me say I am shy. They probably just think I hate people or something. It's not that, I'm just terrified of them. And just like my asexuality, people don't believe me or understand my social phobia. *sigh*

Still, I much prefer being an introvert. I enjoy the insight I have.

I was reading something in my psych textbook. One theory is that introverts are overaroused, they have a lot of electrical activity in their brain and so they seak to reduce stimulation. At the same time extroverts are underaroused, having less activity in the brain and so they seak out stimuli. I completely agree with this theory. Basically extroverts get bored very easily, while introverts are very easily overwhelmed.

Intro here too. I can be very outspoken and chatty when prompted in the right ways though - but I hate small talk and large groups and parties with people I don't know well.

I'm most comfortable with a few people I know well and have a lot in common with, or one on one chats.

I have a hard time making new friends for many reasons, and it takes me a while to warm up to people, even people I really like - for the caution in trusting thing.... But once I make a good friend I know I can trust, I tend to really open up and get close to them and talk up a storm.

Fairly one sided vote so far. I've joined the introverts, although I'm far more of an extrovert than I used to be. I do enjoy socialising, but only with a small group of friends, I can't just go out to a bar or a party and talk to random people. The thought of doing that just terrifies me.

I love my own company, and don't need anyone else, although it can sometimes be fun to be with other people.

Paaaainfully introverted, although you might not be able to tell meeting me in real life. When I'm nervous, I tend to talk a mile a minute in order to fill the silence. :(

Nineteen to one! Red flags are up; that says something!

Reminds me of a joke: What's the difference between an introverted mathematicina and an extroverted mathematician?

An introverted mathematician looks at his shoes when he talks to you. An extroverted one looks at YOUR shoes.

Wait'l this thing really gets going 8)

I'm a borderline hermit myself, extremely introverted. I can deal with people (I work in retail, so I have to) and I'm fine in crowds so long as nobody notices me, but I don't like talking one on one and in small groups where I can't blend into the background. I almost never get lonely or feel like socializing with anybody who isn't my family.

I think it's funny that the one extrovert hasn't spoken up to say he/she is extroverted.

I was tempted to put extrovert. But...I tend to avoid crowded places and being around people more than being alone.

I put introvert, though I'm a highly extroverted introvert... :D

Maybe they got overwhembed by the shear number of us introverts.

Or maybe they just got bored and went somewhere else.

I don't know, I could never understand how their mind worked. It would be interesting to know what it's like.

I suppose introverts think about being introverted more, the extroverts about being extrovert.

Oh, when I started school, I was so shy someone else had to answer the register for me.

I am at ease and very happy with people I know (i.e family, and friends I've known for a long time.)

I *HATE* crowds, and every so often I have had to be part of one.

I think it has a detrimental effect on my health - but hey- now I am senior enough to say stuff off -

o, obviously I am a natural introvert! (can I mention my hobbies? Reading, research, non-competitive fishing, observation etc.?)

I can be outspoken to people I know, and easily on the internet, (as if you guys didn't know that already) but I don't go out of my way to meet people in RL, and actually hardly ever speak at all outside of work (oh, and to friends, *all* of whom I've met through school or work.)

So, introvert.

I put introvert, though I'm a highly extroverted introvert...

Chess - me too. When I get nervous I can't stand to have silences so I just keep talking and talking...and then of course I feel even more like a fool lol. Whenever I have a family member or someone come to visit me they comment on how social I am (at least compared to how I represent myself)...social! ha! I believe that would be called acting. I definitely don't feel social. Just because you're talking doesn't mean you're social.

I am a introvert that stands out from the crowd. I got so fed up with being afraid of dealing with people that I chose to wear bright colors, dye my hair bright red and get glasses that, people tell me, only strong, outgoing people can wear. I do this for the shock value, and take pleasure out of people's reactions in a country full of grey personalities. This has greatly improved my people skills, what to say and what not, and, more importantly, has taught me not to take other people or myself so seriously.

Deliberately bringing myself forth,

PP

Eh, I couldn't really decide.

I have my introverted moods and my extroverted moods.

Sometimes I wish everyone would just leave me the hell alone.

And sometimes I just have to get out and see people.

I seem to recall once taking a quiz about this and getting exactly equal scores for introvert and extrovert.

I picked extrovert because....well....it looked like it needed a little help. :D

Definitely leaning towards introverted, though not half as much as I was as a child.

Exactly the same here. I used to be really shy but less so now, even loud at times, but still introverted generally.

*gasp*

Can you believe.... Another introvert?

Actually, I'm an odd kind of introvert, I hate one-on-one conversations with people I don't know well, I avoid parties like the plague, but I have very little problem with public speaking (maybe because I don't have to hold eye contact for long, I hate eye contact. Plus, I don't feel I have to completely adjust to one person when I'm speaking in front of a bunch.)

I'm the same way, Nugan. I had no problem doing theatre--even nude scenes didn't bother me...just don't make me go to the cast party! I think part of the reason I liked theatre was that everything was right there on the page. You knew what you had to say and do and feel. None of this real-life 'I don't know what to say/do/think/feel' mishegoss. Also, in my public speaking/speechwriting class I had no problem. After class my classmates would sometimes ask me to help them. 'Help me be more confident up there.' Me: *avoids eyes* Uh...well...really you just need to avoid people most of the time--that seems to help.

Exactly! I love being on stage, I despise going to cast parties. I've always loved acting...been everything from Ursula in the Little Mermaid to Anne in Diary of Anne Frank. But I hate going to the cast parties.

I'd say I lean towards introverted (there's a surpise) but if I'm with people I know, respect and like...I love telling stories and being the center of attention. Ask anyone at my school, though, and they'll tell you I spend every lunch period in the library against a bookshelf rather than going down to the cafeteria.

Now I'm curious, though.

Has anyone taken the Jung typology test? I'm wondering now what the results would be. Fairly interesting test, its all yes or no, but the results are quite in depth. If anyone would like to take it, its at http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp It offers four letters and the 'percent' you are of each. I wound up as INFP (Introverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving) But I was only barely Introverted.

It would be interesting to see the amounts.

We have a few threads on the Myers Briggs test...somewhere. We even have a poll, I believe.
