Ooh... :? Are you celiac? I used to work at a health food store, and there are alternative foods, but is it ever difficult to organise food with those restrictions.

I am a big fan of my local health food shop :-D I try not to rely on that stuff too much though because it is heavily processed generally, and as an impoverished student, it is far too expensive!!!

I was born vegetarian, raised vegetarian, and have been vegan 24/7 for the last nine years. :D

That's right, never ate meat in my life. No beef, no pork, no chicken, no fish. Nothing.

Hmm... sounds exactly like the barbecues we have here. Very much a male-dominated form of cuisine. Big chunks of meat, highly flammable substances... now that's MANLY cooking

Of course, asado is spanish for barbecue, but:

1) Britain has never had carnivorous cowboys (The gauchos of the wet pampas lived mainly on beef. Bastards.)

2) Britain hasn´t had stray cattle (and I mean A LOT of wild cows) for centuries, while we had enough to feed our predatory carnivorous cow herders (they just ate the best cuts and sold the hides to their bosses until exporting chilled beef became possible in the late 19th century)

3) We´re second in beef consumption in the world, after the US. But they´re 280,000,000 and we´re 35,000,000!

4) Mine´s better than yours. And cheaper. You can get the best beef in the world (I know french and italian guys who won´t eat beef in europe but will eat as possesed here) for $2-$3 US a kg.

The whole post doesn´t make a lot of sense. But it shows how beefcentric we are. And perhaps, if we turn the post upside down while riding on a monocycle it will sound more convincing. Though I don´t know what I´m trying to convince people about.

O Hexspiral maybe - that meat-eating is OK is the right environment, beef-eating is fine when you're cleaning up feral cattle, and - aue, dont quite know what else except - kia ora TangerinePanda!

Barbeques are very popular here as well but (because there isnt often suitable meat around) I prefer hangi/umu kai (blokes take a pretty big part in these too.)

It all depends how busy I am.

If I have time to cook I eat much healthier than when I'm stranded on campus 14 hours a day eating greasy pizza.

Trying to get back into the healthy thing again. I actually have some vegetables in the fridge......

Fully omnivorous, I eat and enjoy a wide range of grub.

Trouble is...those who indulge, bulge...must extend that cycle-ride to work again!

I have about a zillion food intolerances and have a tendency to get candida, so I have to avoid certain foods for health reasons. I can't eat wheat, yeast, cow's milk, sugar, anything derived from fungi or anything fermented, for example.

I've gotten used to not being able to eat bread, pastry etc. but the yeast intolerance is the worst thing for me. I absolutely adore Marmite but can't have it. :(

I follow mainly a vegetarian lifestyle, sometimes vegan. I try to buy organic foods as often as I can, considering I must subsist on the budget of a college student.

I try to eat as good as I can basically because I'm afraid that my body will look bad when I get older. I eat most of the food groups, I recently have tried to exclude lard and overly processed food from my diet. I like veggies, fruits, and rice; although, I will eat meat-- fish, chicken, and turkey.

Whoah. That's hardcore.

I eat what ever i feel like

Thats one for the poll.

I dont care what I eat, as long as i like it. I hate grease and a lot of fatty stuff, and other stuff which is bad for me, so I have a natural healthy diet system. Chocolate is the basis of my diet. And i feel absolutely fine and stretchy and strong, so im not going to change.

I'd like to eat healthy but instead I just eat not a great deal. What I do eat is unhealthy though :?

Today I had a banana at mid-day, and at 11.00 pm I had a minced beef pie and half a dozen potato smiley faces for dinner.

Basically I eat whatever is on special at the supermarket that week.

This week was roast potatoes and chicken fillets so I guess I'll make a curry, and find something to do with the potatoes later :)

I tend to eat a lot of meat, but only because I still live at home and my mother somehow seems to think that if you don't ingest at least your body weight in meat every day you will die slowly and painfully ;)

But as soon as I can I really want to reduce my meat intake to like maybe once a week. People are not designed to eat as much meat as we do. Up until the last, like 500 years maybe less, people only ate meat maybe once a month (to the best of my knowledge)

On top of that I live in Australia, and most of the meat you get here is like beef and stuff, which is really bad for the Australian environment. If my plans come to fruition I will try to eat kangaroo meat whenever I can instead of beef etc. Besided, it's a lot healthier - its very lean. The only problem is it's expensive, but that's just more incentive to cut down on my meat consumption!

LonePiper- and there's camel and buffalo and donkey, afflicted on your environment (which kangaroo obviously were not) equally lean & healthy meat...

I chose the "Yum! Meat" option. I eat a 100% raw, Palaeolithic diet, which forbids all cooked/processed foods or supplements such as vitamin or mineral tablets etc. etc. Needless to say, people don't start on this diet unless they are more or less terminally ill; I was no exception. Interestingly, like many of the people on this diet, I've grown to really like my food and will stick to it for the rest of my life, as it's helped my health enormously.

I eat... food? I moved out this year, and abandoned the "healthy" (or at least somehow balanced) diet I had in my house, which consisted in vegetables or legumes, and then meat or fish, everyday, plus some fruit, dairy, cereals and bread. Of course I spoiled it eating more chocolate than I should.

When I'm at my apartment, I basically live on pasta, meat and dairy. I do have some vegetables and fish once in a while, but not too often. I still have too much chocolate, and eat my cereal (I do add tons of cocoa to it, but that's another story)

I chose the last option, basically because I think a life without chocolate is not worth living, so it was the closest one  (I won't eat lard though, I grosses me out)

  • 2 weeks later...

I eat everything fish, beef, goat, lamb, tofu, beans, greens, etc.

I try to reduce my intake of processed carbs, white bread, pasta, sugar. It is working for me. I still indulge in sweet treats now and then. Sugar is a drug and I am addicted

SaneMan, I really enjoy sushi (&sashimi) but I also enjoy fisheggs, raw or processed (which is caviar of course.) Show me some kina/umi/sea urchin gonads (all the same thing) and watch me prepare the serving dish!

In fact, *any* seafood/kaimoana is my delight, with the exception of sea mammal or 'big gamefish' flesh. I eat seabird chicks (the adults are extremely tough) and - tra la la la! -ate my first Bluff oysters today, with the first fresh (as against salted) birds, coming tomorrow.

All joy to everyone concerning food-

I'm a vegetarian occasionally. I was a vegetarian for three years but now I do eat chicken. After having been a vegetarian I feel kind of guilty about eating chicken now. So I try to eat mostly vegetarian foods. If given the choice on a menu in a restaraunt for example, I would choose the vegetarian option. I only eat once a day so I try to make that one meal as healthy as possible.

I have several vegetarian dishes I like to cook often, but I also like meat and pretty much any other type of food that isn't actively toxic.

I lose weight fast on a veg-only diet, but the last two times I tried approaching that, my innards locked up good (it was quite painful.) Too many beans, maybe.

And, just possibly, too much information

I'm definitely NOT a vegetarian. I used to not eat red meat, but then I found out that I have celiac disease (no wheat, rye, barley, or oats) so that pretty much went right down the drain.

Now I have to check food labels on everything I eat, even stuff that I've eaten before without problem 'cause they change stuff allll the time. I do eat a lot of junk food, though, probably more than I really should, and I hate salad with a passion. So even with my limited diet, I'm probably not the healthiest eater out there.

I try to eat healthily, but only succeed about forty percent of the time. I eat whatever we have around here, which, usually, isn't much.

I try to keep a healthy diet and I am firmly omniverous.

I have one basic rule for eating: I will try anything that someone else will eat. So far the only vegetable I really don't like is the beet. There are, however, several meats I really don't care for: rat, venison, and wild goose come to mind. I haven't had the opportunity to try insects yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I would not eat a member of an endangered species for ethical reasons. I find the idea of eating monkey and porpoise quite disturbing, so those might be exceptions to my rule if I were ever offered some. Cannibalism, however..... Hmmm, anyone else some to the end of Soylent Green with Charlton Heston running down the street screaming, "Soylent Green is made from people!" and think, "Yeah, so?"

Cate,

I haven't read all the replies yet but in answer to could you have added anything, I would have put: Any dietary restrictions for ethical reasons?

I used to be vegan and used to be vegetarian, now I eat anything I consider healthy but I still don't eat anything on four legs because they are just too much like cats and dogs.

I figure that as our bodies evolved to allow us to eat a wide variety, I'll go with that option, though I understand people having an aversion to eating meat.

I have an intolerance of too much fat in my diet (gives me heartburn), like an earlier poster I have low blood pressure (have to be careful no to stand up too quickly)

Well, I work at a takeout place so ... my diet is ... grease ... mostly. It's really bad because I do have health restrictions *slight* on what I can eat, but I don't follow by anything. I'm just trying to eat and make money while not having to spend money on groceries *gets free food a lot*. Umm, and I don't know how to cook. I wish to be vegetarian mostly for healthy reasons, and I want to eat healthy. But I seriously don't know where to start and it's sad. I just go with habit and I am surrounded by people who eat junk food and well it's all entirely too depressing so let's talk about something else.

I do drink lots of water. I love water.

I have to add also, that if I have meat more than once or twice a week, I feel really crappy.
