Wow.....um, I'm not even sure where to even start comprehending this.

Yeah. It's transphobic (of the erasing sort rather than active hating sort but it's still crappy) and... I have no idea with the asexual thing. Is she actually asexual or did they use the word not knowing what it really means? In either case it's all muddled up and who knows what.

It also leaves you wondering if she's the kind of woman who likes cutesy things, like some do, is she making up for missed time, or is she actually a child despite her age? They say the photos were the 'lowest class' or least worse when it came to this sort of thing so did she just not figure out what they were or did she know and...

So yeah.

They muddle things up, explain nothing, imply more than one thing about her whilst implying she's a cross dressing man rather than a woman and....

arggg

Super transphobic. This article was painful to read.

No idea, some people like cutsy things even if they are older, but it could be lost time stuff. I don't want to judge.

Ellie! I didn't know you were on the project team over here!

Umm, yes. Some grown ups do just like cutsy things even if they're older. I just tend to think of the adult child thing more cause I have a cousin like that (her son is, mentally, older than she is already) but that mostly came to mind cause this woman didn't seem to get that the photos weren't just pretty pictures of girls that she wished she'd been.

Painful is a word for it, yeah. Bloody stupid thing.

Ahhh, still, I didn't realise. You hardly talk about AVEN on tumblr.

Oh, I know, but I can babble on about things

PiF,

There's a bit of information missing here. In the United States, the pictures she had would be considered creepy, but not child pornography. It's a difference between UK and US law. Her pictures were level 1 on a scale called the Copine Scale. Basically, there's no nudity and it's all suggestive.

I think this is a case where someone clearly had mental health issues. The judge did what he could according to the law, and the reporter simply didn't dig out his AP Stylebook which while being outdated on other things does recommend doing exactly the opposite in the treatment of transgender individuals than what the reporter did.. (Which is an annoying act that should make anyone feel dirty, but there are times you need to do it.)

Edit: Corrected a pronoun error.

I do believe level one is the type as ..pictures of children and may contain images of children naked..for example taking pictures of children through a long lens who are so young they maybe naked say in a park or a beach..it's not clear what they were however

my worry sin is

as asexuality becomes more aware..will it be used as this person did..i couldn't possibly be a pedo..i am asexual

I can't see how knowing her birthname or street of residence is relevant in this article, nor can I see how it's legal to mention them.

Other than that. That's just.............

I wonder if it's because they feel that it's justified, since she'll have to sign the sex offenders register anyway.

I also noticed that they put the term asexual in quotation marks. I wonder what that indicates.

I find it interesting that, while the journalist (and his/her editor/s) saw fit to refer to the female subject of the article as "a man" based on her being of transsexual history, saw fit to name her publicly and even saw fit to mention where she lives, the journalist didn't attach his or her own name to the article. I think this stinks of hypocrisy and the uneven power dynamics that lead to the abuse of power by the media.

Regarding some of the discussion about whether what she did constitutes child pronography, the judge is quoted in the article as saying that he didn't judge her possession of the photos to be sexually motivated, but due to regression/romance for her missed childhood, as several other posters have pointed out. Given this, I don't understand why he ordered that to sign the sex offenders register for five years... Surely, if there are mental health issues going on here (which there appear to be, IMO), then shouldn't she have been ordered to have counselling so that trained professionals can teach her how what she did, even if not motivated by sex or a desire to abuse, was nonetheless wrong, and why she mustn't do it again? I would have thought that would be more logical.

Lastly, I found this article to be very damaging for both asexuals and for transsexuals (and women of transsexual background). This kind of lazy, dumb reporting is, quite frankly, abusive to both groups and has just associated both groups with the sexual abuse of children. This is the kind of thing that sticks in people's minds, even subconsciously, and in terms of getting the word out about asexuality and visibility, has probably placed us many years back in the minds of every person who read this article (the same thing goes for transsexual and transgender rights).

My quick search of Wikipedia uncovered this for Level 1:

"Non-erotic and non-sexualised pictures showing children in their underwear, swimming costumes from either commercial sources or family albums. Pictures of children playing in normal settings, in which the context or organisation of pictures by the collector indicates inappropriateness."

In any case, your worry is shared. If enough child abusers attempt to use that reason it could have a backlash on asexuality. Specifically, doubters of asexuality could make the assumption that an asexual, who as never shown interest in any adult relationships, must be a pedophile. As sort of more extreme version of "Not Hetero = Homo".

That is the most strangest thing I have read, it posibily depicts somone of a lower IQ.

This is the strangest bit?

He said Hammersley, who described herself as asexual, had “never been in my view someone whose attraction to femininity and children has had its root at all in matters of sexual behaviour”.

Eh... Attraction to the female form... and children... While being a cross-dressing asexual?
