Amcan
Passed my test a few years ago now. And have a car now too.
TheSMMG
i dont have a car, but i have a motorcycle, i am more a motorcyclist more than motorist anyway Cool, another biker! What do you ride? I have a Honda X4, and love it - bikes rock!
Opel the Old
i ride a suzuki GS500E that was the cheapest one i can afford at that level, i have been riding it since 1999, she (my bike) will have her 6th birthday next week!
TheSMMG
Good choice - many riding schools and dispatchers can't be wrong. Mine's a Japanese import - X4s are not officially imported into the UK - and reaches the grand old age of 8 sometime this year! Are there any good bike meets near where you are? Lors
Are there any good bike meets near where you are? My dad rides a bike. He's part of a club and they have regular meetings and oganise rideouts and trips to places like wales and france. Also, I remember seeing a big congregation of bikers meet in a little village near Didcot at a pub as well. Is that what you mean? Anyway, what I orginally came to the thread to say was: I've had a provisional for over a month and I've still never been behind a wheel!
TheSMMG
Hi Lors, sounds like your dad's a cool dude! Yes, pub meets is the kind of thing I meant, like Fox's Diner on the A4074 - a fair number of bikes there weekends with a regular Monday night meet when even more turn up. The wife of a biking work colleague astutely observed on seeing such a gathering that biking was more than a means of getting around, it was a culture. Never been behind a wheel? Shouldn't that be "handlebars"? Bikes are less practical, but loads more fun - just ask your dad...
Lors
Bikes are less practical, but loads more fun - just ask your dad... Yes, he often telling me that. I went on it once. I was a bit uncomfortable because I wasn't sitting properly so I couldn't really enjoy it. I'll probably learn one day though. That one in Didcot happens once a month I think. I don't know much about it I'm afraid. I was just driving past in a taxi and the driver mentioned it.
Opel the Old
Are there any good bike meets near where you are? some, but i usually don't join, i dont like socialising with strangers..
TheSMMG
Go for it, Lors! If you'd not been on a bike before it's bound to have felt weird/uncomfortable to start with Bikers don't seem like strangers to me, Opel - a very friendly buch of people in my experience.
Opel the Old
not very many girls riders around, and the things about "when girls gather, they gossip" bothers me a bit i cruise everywhere though, i may ride with a friend or two, dont like to socialize with 10 people at a time
TheSMMG
True, there's not many female riders...or for that matter, black or Asian people for some reason. I suppose petrolheads amongst the latter tend to be into cars. No fear about the "gossip" - people at bike meets talk lots of rubbish about bikes: performance, add on bits, favourite roads, shared experiences, moans about the Pigs, rubbish car drivers as well as the good ones that move over a bit etc... - non bikers will be bored to tears! Kelly
Oh, my. I am nearly 50 and have never had a driver's license. I take the train to and from work. The depot in Salem is just a block away, and it only takes nine minutes to take me to the town in which I work. I call it the Hogwart's Express, and it sure beats driving. TheSMMG
You're right, all manner of different people have bike clubs. A small example of the diversity: women's bike clubs, Christian bikers, there's the GBMCC (Gay Bikers Motorcycle Club) and the Starboys - who have a prediliction for covering their machines in fur(!) and performing death and laws-of-physics defying stunts, usually on the road... I'm a bike nerd! I can talk rubbish about bikes for ages...

Kelly
I love my car and driving, it is just a sense of freedom out on the highway stereo up windows down doing 100 mph. ...Jump to the ground As the turbo slows to cross the borderline Run like the wind, As excitement shivers up and down my spine Down in his barn My uncle preserved for me, an old machine --- For fifty-odd years To keep it as new has been his dearest dream I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car A brilliant red barchetta, from a better, vanished time I fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime... Wind in my hair --- Shifting and drifting --- Mechanical music --- Adrenalin surge --- Well-weathered leather Hot metal and oil The scented country air Sunlight on chrome The blur of the landscape Every nerve aware... birdnerd
20, license, but no car. Gas prices being what they are, I don't mind being a pedestrian most of the year and borrowing one of my parents' cars when I'm home.
DarkcatXXC
I have a license and two cars, one of which is my company vehicle. I didn't get my license until I was nineteen because I really didn't want to get one, and no real desire to learn how to drive. Unfortunately, I live in the suburbs, and public transportation sucks. And to get a good job, it helps to have reliable transportation, i.e. your own car. Now, I still don't like driving, but there's no way around it, especially now that I have a job that requires me to spend eight hours a day behind the wheel. And there's just no good way to get around where I live, whether for work or recreation, without a vehicle. :(
Ereinion
No I don't have a license and I don't want to. I drove a car once. It was on a camping in the Pine Ridge Indian reservation. I almost hit all the tipi's that where standing there. And if I drive the way I cycle I don't trust myselfe. I get angry to soon and would speed and cause accidents. :( I don't need it either. In Holland there are good connections by train or bus. So i can get everywhere i want.
anticulus
Yes, passed my test when I was 17, had a car ever since - although in my student days it was usually broken down because I couldn't afford to fix it. I'd be kinda screwed without it. My workplace is 8 miles from home, the nearest shop 5 miles, and public transport is practically non-existant -especially in the winter. maco
I got my license today. Congrats! :) But I suppose that you cannot change your vote, though. :? Don't need to. I didn't vote until last night because I knew I had my test scheduled.
Guest
Got my license just a few weeks ago, and driving in my parents' car. Having a license comes in handy, but I think I'll wait a bit more until I get my own car. Cars are expensive, insurance is expensive, and gas is even more expensive.
Fake_Plastic_Trees
i have a provisinal licence, and learning to drive
Avalon
I do have a license but don’t own a car. As I live in the very centre of Helsinki there’s no where to park it! :? And according to my understanding it’s cheaper to use the public transports… I’ll probably get a car if I move somewhere where I’ll need it.
Cela
I have a driver's license since 2 years back in november. Which mean that in november my trial period will be over :). But it doesn't really matter since I sold my baby (she was the best that little car) about 5 months ago :(.
