A while back, there was a post in announcements for interviews for an asexuality article for A-magasinet Magazine. The article is now out, and Jack Molay, the author of Crossdreamers, was kind enough to provide a summary of the article and translation of some parts:

The headline: "We would rather have cake"

Heading: "For this gang most things are better than sex"

The story starts with a presentation of David Jay and his meeting with the medical establishment:

"Jay went to the doctor, but he found nothing wrong. It was the same doctor that helped him regarding the question - If you don't want sex, and do not miss it, then what is the problem?"

David says that it helped growing up in St.Louis and in a liberal environment that accepted gay people.

The article then goes on to discuss the role of the internet, Jay's invention of the word "asexual" and the establishment of the AVEN web site. it also tells about Jay appearing in television programs.

Jay: "The goal is to be accepted as a sexual minority in the same way as homosexuals. This is why the asexuals take part in pride parades."

"Randi GressgÄrd, the Centre for Women and Gender Research at the University of Bergen is one of the few who have done research on asexuality. She has studied their web sites and means that the asexuals challenge our entire idea of sexual orientation.

- We are used to look at sexual identity from the perspective of whom we are attracted to. But the asexuals demand accept for the idea that absence of sexual attraction is also a sexual orientation."

Aftenposten asks her if the asexuals are sexually traumatized or unsure of their own orientation. She answers:

"This is the traditional understanding, that is that they have a physical or psychological disease for which they need treatment. This view is supported by the pharmaceutical industry which want to sell their drugs and heal them. The asexuals demand accept for being the way they are. Their struggle reminds us about the one about the previous struggles of homosexuals and other sexual minorities."

She points out that the absence of sexual attraction not necessarily means an absence of sexual excitement.

Aftenposten has been in contact with people on AVEN, but found no Norwegian willing to be interviewed.

The final quote is from Neth Dugan:

"We are an invisible and unknown minority. Gays, lesbians and trannies may have a harder time, but we are lonelier and more isolated."
