I suggest creating a terminology tree page.

Have you got a blacklist page (stops certain spam ect)

I'll play with things later tonight and work on a blacklist page if needed.

There seems to be Extension:SpamBlacklist, but it's not installed on the wiki.

Is it possible to move the Beginner's guide to the MediaWiki: namespace? It doesn't belong in the (main) article namespace.

pft, I wasn't kidding when I promised to revive the Wikiteam. Alongside the PT, Tea and Strivna, we now have Robin!

Bringing this post into the spotlight.

Ack, saw this earlier, seems like something that requires a dedicated discussion

Thank you for adding me. I'll do my best :)

Hard to have a page for a term that's not defined the same universally. Perhaps we should list all of them?

Since there is a change in definitions of aromanticism like WTFRomantic and others, should the Wiki follow suit? I could do that perhaps...

Is the definition settled yet? I thought there's still room for discussion.

WTFromantic has multiple definitions,

The romantic lexicons thread post has changed - but not the FAQ post beneath it, so im assuming something's been settled...

Oh! Stuff has happened! There's a few new wikiteam members (RobinL has helped out a loooooooot)

Thereś lots of change... the media articles should look nicer now (they were gross and horribly formatted and short). Theyŕe pretty much all up to date now... but if you've got any newer info, feel free to add! I know thereś a few things missing, someone out there must know

I've heard that Tumblr was keen to point out a few AVENwiki mistakes. Well, Tumblr, we're not going to stop you... register and edit as you see fit =P

We're still waiting on that software update  I know Robin and Tea have worked on a lot of things, I figured it'd be best for them to summarize it more accurately x3

(ps. I'm still around just suffering from memory loss and depression, luckily Robin and Tea are still around regularly >.>)

Thanks, Arca.

So a quick update:

  • As said above, we have expanded the media articles (Thanks, Arca!)
  • Killed a bunch of spammers. Will they never stop?
  • We are trying to establish connection with the German wiki, then interlanguage coordination will be complete. (Hopefully I speak good enough German, or they speak good enough English)
  • And of course, countless other changes to the wiki that are too minor to be mentioned
Some things we wanted to do, but can't due to limited server access.

  • Update the software from 1.13.3 to 1.21.1 (or whatever is latest at the moment)
  • Link alt lang wikis with interlanguage links

When you have time, help us out! A wiki is never finished.

Oh! On the topic of media articles... there's like, a few hundred more articles that could be added to the Wiki. Back in the day, we'd just create a new wiki page for every news article that discussed asexuality... but we've sort of fallen behind on that, so here's a question: How many of you use the Wiki to read about those? Do you think it's worth adding them to the Wiki?

A new idea for the media articles: Organize them by network/broadcaster. So, "Natalie Cassidy's Real Britain" and the other BBC articles would be merged into a single BBC article, rather than the several BBC related articles we've got scattered around right now

Oh, there's good news! Cole has killed the dying ReCAPTCHA and replaced it with a new spam filter for us (thanks again ~<3)! So we've lost that infamous and invasive ReCAPTCHA error message, and the RSS/Atom feed is now functional too

Oh yeah, there's a new registration process too! This ought to keep those spammers away (if it doesn't, literally nothing else will). You should see a "log in / create account" link to the top right of the page. If you haven't registered an account already, you'll see this message:

"To obtain a user account, you must request one."

... this'll take you through to a registration form. It looks big and scary but don't panic, only four things are required; A username, your email (for confirmation), and a biography (see the note). You'll need to agree to the Terms of Service (... not quite written yet but nevermind that), there's also a final math query (usually a simple question, something like "96 - 5 =")
  • Just a quick note regarding the biography: There's a limit of 50 words but there's no set standard or expectation for content (yet)... be lazy, copy/paste some random text (as long as ain't hate speech)... oh no wait, the Wiki will use this biography as your userpage, but you can remove it afterwards. Anything works, even if you repost "derp derp derp" fifty times
  • An important note regarding the "real name", resume and other fields: These aren't required at all... at least I hope not, I got through and registered a test account without providing these details
Once you've done all of that and sent a request, you should receive an email like this...

Someone, probably you from IP address [iP address here], has requested an account "Example_name1" with this email address on AVENwiki.

To confirm that this account really does belong to you on AVENwiki, open this link in your browser:

http://www.asexuality.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:RequestAccount&action=confirmemail[confirmation link]

If the account is created, only you will be emailed the password.

If this is *not* you, do not follow the link.

This confirmation code will expire at 06:02, 8 October 2013.

... follow the confirmation link ASAP, we can't confirm the account if you haven't confirmed your email. Hopefully you're not an obvious spammer and your account will be confirmed as soon as possible

See, it's pretty simple. Once a sysop has confirmed your account, you'll receive another email, like this one...

Your request for an account has been approved on AVENwiki.

Account name: "Example_name1" [the name you registered with]

Password: [AVENwiki sysop can't see your password, it's automatically generated]

[the sysop might comment on your request. If they do, you'll see it here]

For security reasons you will need to change your password on first login.

To login, please go to http://www.asexuality.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin.

... return to the "log in / create account" page and enter the temporary passcode. Once you've done this, you'll see this message:

You logged in with a temporary emailed code. To finish logging in, you must set a new password here:

... which is basically just a prompt for you to change it to a password of your choice. And that's all! If all goes well, you've got yourself an active account... don't wait around, c'mon and help us out! Keep in mind, ordinary members can't create articles (for now) but you can request them right here in this thread

Fuck... if the spammers can break through that, we're screwed. If you run into any issues, post 'em here... or PM a sysop if you prefer privacy. And don't forget to shower Cole with affection too <3

Note: It'll really help if you say that you're from AVEN. Even better, provide your AVEN username.

Not required, but it'll insure that we accept the request.

I'm wondering if it'd be worthwhile creating categories for broadcasters, or maybe a navbox for all the media articles we've got so far?

There's one or two BBC programs that are without a dedicated article (eg. How Sex Works). I think one of my original proposals was to create a page for each media appearance (kinda got one already though), but maybe it'd make more sense to create an article for individual broadcasters and merge some of the articles we've got

There's a "Richard & Judy" article (ITV program), but no article for "This Morning" (another ITV program, mentioned in the media article)

TVNZ's 20/20 lacks an article, while sharing a name with ABC's 20/20 (which has an article). But there's a few ABC articles, and a few mentions of TVNZ, so I wonder if it'd make sense to merge the ABC articles into one ABC article, and create a new TVNZ article

I'd like for there to be pages for each media appearance, or broadcaster (for those that have multiple appearances), and in each page, include a brief synopses about the media appearance(s).

When we have enough articles for each appearance made, then having navboxes would be more worthwhile.

EDIT (3/13/14): Appearances with an asterisk before them have been added to the wiki, and I'll update this post to keep track of the articles listed here that have been added.

Sounds like a good idea, but do we really have that much to write about the articles? We might end up having tons of short articles.

We should go with either broadcaster or appearance, not both. It would be messy. I'm going for broadcaster.

Should we have a qualifier for listing broadcasters? Every broadcaster? After there are more than one appearances? And how does it co-exist with the existing Asexuality in the media page?

It may depend. There could be not only a summary for each media appearance, but also include a criticism section for those whose portrayal of asexuality is inaccurate, or there's some other controversy. Are some articles and media appearances considered to have special significance to the asexual community history? Those that do should have a note about their historical significance.

It'd be easier to go by broadcaster, and for each broadcaster that has multiple appearances, have a section for each one. Or maybe we don't need articles for every broadcaster or every media appearance? For media appearances or broadcasters that we think don't need their own article, we could still flesh out the Asexuality in the media section more to include synopses for them.

For example, the article linked here: http://www.asexuality.org/en/topic/97513-asexuality-now-a-gender/ , doesn't need its own wiki page because it's not about asexuality, and only briefly mentions it, but could be still noted in the media section for being an article that is incorrect about asexuality.

I support pruning the article of individual users, universities, and recipes. Does a more comprehensive report of media appearances exist elsewhere, though? I think such a report might be useful in the future for understanding our history, and if no other report exists I'm for leaving that section of the Wiki. It probably does need serious updating, given the overall state of the Wiki.

We've messed around with the recipe articles and I think we've deleted the university articles. I'm not sure what happened to the individual user pages... but if I remember correctly, we only had one of two of those pages? And media appearances, we've got the Asexuality in the Media page (with 2000-2010 and pre-2000 as subpages). Those articles mainly focus on English-language media but there's a few non-English articles too. Realistically it's not possible to catch every media article, though I think we're close
