I wish Stephen Fry was asexual. He'd make a very good one! Charlie Brooker being ace, I'd be delighted.

QueerSecrets has some nice work on it

The podcast Lesbian Mafia has an episode titled 'Asexual Lesbian' (episode 45).

It is a very good show but if you want to listen to the (quite short) asexual mention and conversation it's starts at 45,40 if you download it from iTunes (for free). Mostly it's about sexual attraction so it's partly relevant.

STOP BEFORE 55,00! D: Before you rip your ears off people who don't want to listen to... umm... *cough*

Was just listening to podcast "MyThree Shrinks" by psychiatrists talking about asexuality basically saying they didn't think it was a problem that should be addressed in terms of mental illness. They sounded like they were reading and reacting to the AVEN faq. If you look it up on itunes, it's episode 19, about 10 minutes in.

First episode of 'DCI Banks' has a line of dialogue from a character who says (from memory) "I haven't had sex in two years. It's got to the stage that I don't even miss it. Do you think I'm asexual?"

Yes, I was watching an ITV1 drama. I'd had a hard day, just needed to veg out. Please don't judge me.

I just started this book called "Whatever Love Means" by the comedian David Baddiel. It's described as "...and part-meditation on the nature of sex and death" plus it starts with a quote by Freud so I knew what I was getting myself into. But in the first chapter two of the main charcters are having sex (an affair cos the woman is married- and maybe the guy has a girlfrined, can't remember actually) and it's on the day Princess Dianna dies. Anyway the guy really desires the sex with her but in one part when describing the nature of the sex (in parallel with the rolling news' summing up of Di's life) it says "Emma on top, a stupid move on a two-seater, the primary issue in Vic's mind not the pulpy hold of her vagina on his penis but how to stop the entire thing toppling over". Which is exactly the sort of "Ace moment" I've had in the past myself. Though it's made very clear in the chapter that Vic overall wants the sex (and is "exploiting Emma and the nation's grief") it goes on to talk about how he never had a girlfriend at school and how it's always been the after-effects of the sex he enjoys, the closeness of a new relationship or the danger of an affair. So I don't know if that means he's ace or grey or demi or what. Anyway I've only read a few pages so it'll be interesting to see how it develops.

We see the interview of Kendal, 23.

Tyra says Kendal is 'pure'

Kendal responds that she doesn't like semen...

The other judge says she is germophode.

I've only read a few more pages since but there's this bit;

"for Vic sex was not something to be thought of every 15 seconds...He hardly thought about it at all. He felt it at times, as a physical sensation...(*some stuff about arousal*)...Desire did not come upon him, it was existential."

Then it talks about how he wishes he didn't have any sexual feelings, like how some asexuals on here complain about being asexual but having an unwanted libido.

I was interviewed for this zine, "White Blackbirds" Volume 2. The theme is "women who aren't married and don't want to be". In my interview, I talk at length about asexuality, and how my personal experiences being asexual have informed my views on marriage and relationships. If anyone's interested, you can order a copy here. The whole zine is a pretty interesting read.

I posted this in the National Coming out day thread, but I thought I would post it here too:

I did a google search on Asexual in news, and I got two National Coming Out day articles, both mentioning asexual:

http://thenewsoftoday.com/national-coming-out-day-extra-special-this-year/3553/

Today, is the 22nd annual National Coming Out Day. It is observed by members of the LGBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and transgender)

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/redeye-boystown/2010/10/national-coming-out-day-my-story.html

National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an internationally observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual and transgender issues.

The ECPR Standing Group on Gender and Politics forms a broad-based network on issues relating to the study of gender and sexuality in politics and world politics.

For its next conference (Jan 2011), it has noted that asexuality is not treated adequately, and asked for research papers to be submitted.

http://www.ecprnet.eu/sg/ecpg/section_details.asp?sectionID=7

Section Details

Section ID: 7

Section Title: Sexuality and the Body

Section Chair(s)

Ute Kalender (Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society, Austria)

Description

State policies have always exerted and still exert power over gendered bodies and sexual practices. In recent decades feminist theory and movements have therefore intriguingly shown that supposedly neutral concepts like nation, European Union or state are saturated with normative assumptions about gender, sexuality and the body. These critiques have meant that the body and sexualities have re-emerged as subjects not only in academic knowledge but also in public discourses: Abortion, contraception, new reproductive technologies, kinship, parenthood, domestic and sexual violence - in particular rape, incest, sexual harassment and pornography - and female sexualities, including sexual orientation and prostitution, have been key topics.

However, these criticisms long focused on the female body and assumed an intelligibly gendered subject, namely the heterosexual woman. Interventions from academics and activists termed disabled, lesbian, black, migrant, sm, non-European or non-Christian as well as from transgender or intersex persons have also shown that feminist claims and theoretical assumptions often did not match with their living situations and experiences of discrimination or were even highly exclusive. Heteronormative, ableist or racist aspects of state policies were often ignored by feminist theory and activism, and topics like asexuality were not treated adequately.

This section welcomes papers which focus on developments over the past decade and the mobilization of women’s, queer, transgender groups, and/or political debates and policy at the national or supra-national level, and/or counter movements. The papers can be empirically as well as theoretically oriented. Comparative work as well as intersectional approaches, work on forgotten bodies and on marginalized sexualities are especially welcomed.

This one is pretty tenuous, but maybe Trofimov from The Cherry Orchard?

In Act II he says his relationship with the 17 year old Anya is is not love but "above love", and in Act III he's teased about being a late bloomer, 26 and having never had a relationship. I've put some bits below, translations vary but that's the gist.

Act II

TROFIMOV. Varya's afraid we may fall in love with each other and won't get away from us for days on end. Her narrow mind won't allow her to understand that we are above love. To escape all the petty and deceptive things which prevent our being happy and free, that is the aim and meaning of our lives. Forward! We go irresistibly on to that bright star which burns there, in the distance! Don't lag behind, friends!

Act III

LUBOV. [Angry, but restrained] You're twenty-six or twenty-seven, and still a schoolboy of the second class!

TROFIMOV. Why not!

LUBOV. You ought to be a man, at your age you ought to be able to understand those who love. And you ought to be in love yourself, you must fall in love! [Angry] Yes, yes! You aren't pure, you're just a freak, a queer fellow, a funny growth. . . .

TROFIMOV. [in horror] What is she saying!

LUBOV. "I'm above love!" You're not above love, you're just what our Fiers calls a bungler. Not to have a mistress at your age!

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but something that made me happy was in an episode of Huge. One of the characters (a counselor) said that she was asexual. :) It was the first time I have ever heard it on a television show.

Well, in a webcomic I read one of the characters... ah well I will post it here (don't judge me, I was introduced to this from the LJ spotlight and I like the way it is written. I've never even had nor liked My Little Pony. XD):

000d3crp.jpg

And the Authors description:

Some people are perfectly happy by themselves. Minty is a self-contained unit!

Anyway, made me happy, even commented about it using the term aromantic asexual (hey, the author might not know the term for it).

So an avenite friend of mine got me into Modern Family and I've been watching it all week (it's great btw, thanks JP). And there was a light-hearted mention of asexuality in one episode. There's a gay couple and one is dressed up as a clown (called Fizbo) for their nephew's birthday party, the boyfriend says something like "you look like a weird gay clown uncle" and Cam says back "Fizbo is not gay, he's asexual, he's an innocent who's only drive is to bring people joy and laughter and balloon animals, he's the least sexual being on earth".
