I heared the term asexual in a movie called Chance (2002). I was so happy to finally have a word, and from there I went on google and found AVEN. The movie is on youtube by the way.

I was browsing the forums on Nationstates (which, come to think of it, I haven't been on for a few years now) when I stumbled onto a link to AVEN, so either in that forum or here, I can't remember which.

A friend of mine on a forum mentioned it. C: She talks about her asexuality on there often. It was about a year and a half before I decided to apply the term to myself, though. xD;

Derp :B Was that me, or is it obnoxious to assume? I make a lot of noise sometimes >>

I found out through DeviantArt. Like midnightfae I made it up and called myself asexual for a while, as a way of shrugging off those awkward "soooo, who do you like?" moments. I stumbled across a stamp that someone had made in support of asexuality and was thrilled to find that it is actually fine to not be attracted to people.

I heard the term from a webcomic called "Mundane Nirvana". Willow, one of the main characters identifies as asexual, and her perception of/responses to the sexual world struck me as unbelievably similar to my own. I sent the comic to a friend and was all "zomg look! It's me!", and then started referring to myself as asexual (jokingly at first, then seriously once i found out it was an 'actual thing').

Three Steps At A Time

I'm not sure where I first heard the term. It was just sort of in the ether. When I started really asking myself some questions (what is is meant by 'low sex drive'? what is 'sexual aversion disorder'? what is asexuality?) I did random searches on google and wikipedia which quickly led me to AVEN.

One of the first helpful articles for me was on Salon.com I'm not really interested in sex and never have been

I did a Google search, and the AVEN FAQ's popped up. ^_^

-I'm also looking at doing some research sometime this year on asexuality...not sure what facet yet...still working on sorting things out.-

Good luck!!

I over heard it whilst eavesdropping in on a conversation where people were discussing a mutual friend of theirs:

'He's come to the conlusion he's Asexual, he doesn't like men or women'

Voted 'Other'!

Oh wow... you have to have 'heard of it from somewhere'?

Ahahaha, it's just one of those words I feel like I've always known. I didn't know much about it, and not the precise definition we use on Aven, but it's one of those I feel like I've always had in the back of my mind. I can't tell you when I first learned the word 'gay' either, or where from. I don't know if I just have bad memory, or the area I'm in is just really used to these words.

Then I looked it up randomly, on a whim, because I just love discussions about this stuff (for no known reason).

Its funny I think.

I was googling the term LGBT to find out about related sites and the term LGBTA popped up.

So I started googling LGBTA and thus read for the first time the term Asexual .

From there on I read the wiki posting related to asexuality and from there I came straight to AVEN,

but if it was not for the Google search engine I would still not know what is wrong with me. lol  <_<

I heard about asexuality for the first time when someone on another forum started a thread about it, and posted a link to AVEN.

My mother and I were listening to Morrissey in the car when I was nine. He was singing "Will Never Marry" off the Bona Drag album. I asked her why he was saying he would live and die alone. She told me he was asexual. I asked her what that meant, and she (a little inexpertly) explained that he didn't want to have "the usual" relationships with other people, so he wouldn't marry and wouldn't have children. Yep, I stored that away for 18 years afterwards before I brought it up again to come out to her.

Wikipedia...

While listening to my uncle talk about how my cousin "came out" that he was gay, he mentioned things about how gender identity (and physical traits), as well as sexual identity, are not always rigidly defined or easy to classify. It was such an "A-HA moment" for me. I realized that there wasn't a mold everyone is supposed to fit into, and began to research it. A defining moment of my life, for sure. The Wikipedia article was a bridge to AVEN and the rest is history...

I'm a member of online science fiction fandom, particularly on Dreamwidth and LJ, and an avid fanfic reader and writer, and get annoyed by how much sex is in most fanfic. (I'm intellectually fascinated by sex/sexuality, but there is a limit, and there are so many fics out there that exist solely for the porn or where the author just stuck sex scenes in randomly to have a sex scene.) Then I saw one of my friends posting about a community on Dreamwidth called "Asexual Fandom" and I checked it out because I was curious, and from there was linked to articles here. It explained so much.

I found out through TVtropes as well. This seems to be more common than I expected.

on discovery- about 6 years ago- was this show about sex. it was very late and it discussed many issues sex-related. one episode was about asexuals. i was intrigued but i didn't think twice about it. much later- after some exploring- i realized i was one of them ^_^

I'd never heard of it as an orientation until a few years ago, although I've wondered about myself for ages. Someone on one of my mailing lists had a link to AVEN in hir email sig and I got curious. I checked the site out a week or two later -- torn between curiosity, nerves, and fear, I'd say -- and most of the things I read had me going "yes, that's me. and that. and that...wow...that...that's me..."

I was on Wikipedia's "Human Sexuality" portal (don't ask how I got there  ), and the word "asexual" caught my eye. I clicked on it, and was enlightened.

Other. I talked online to a therapist who just told me to look up "asexual" after telling him I did not have sex for over 20 yrs and had no desrie to be with anybody. He did not tell me I was asxeual but let me figure it out on my own. BTW this was the first site I looked at when I Googled it up! Thanks you AVEN! :cake::cake::cake::cake::cake::cake::cake::cake::cake:

The term itself? I'm pretty sure it was in someone's signature on deviantart. Something about the "fanboys" who considered the Doctor asexual. Like:

Fanboy: The Doctor's asexual!

[poster]: Your mom's asexual!

Yeah.... not the best introduction. At the time I thought it meant both uninterested AND incapable of sex.

My boyfriend at the time asked me if I were a lesbian because I told him that I wasn't sexually attracted to him. He declared me to be Asexual, having heard the term in a psych class he was taking. From there I looked it up on my own.

Some people on a forum were talking about it. And I was like, "whats that? lol." Then I read it and really went, "WAIT, WHATS THAT?!" "THATS ME!!! WHAT, THIS ISN'T NORMAL?!" So yeah.

I found out about asexuality on TVtropes

I guess this isn't as abnormal as one would think, but their article really isn't too bad (it's a humor website that isn't typically interested in accuracy)

Anyways it got the idea in my head, and eventually I ended up here :D
