Help consoling sexual friend about breakup

one of my best friends just broke up with a girl he had been seeing for like 2 years and was completely in love with and now shes being an evil little &*^% and sending him hate mail and informing him shes dating again and stuff. He cares about her so much he was even faithful to her when she moved to Alaska (he lives in VA) and I don't know how to help him seeing as I don't really understand the kind of relationship they had. My friend and I are both 18 if that helps

Its simple really, Cheer him up, take his mind off her, tell him shes a bitch if you want and hes better off without her, he'll get over it in time, just be there for him if he need its >.<
