Autism has been quite thoroughly surveyed here. This is a survey of other disorders considered to be mental disorders either in cause or in effect (e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome which seems to be associated with immune system abnormalities but affects mental processes). Couldn't fit anywhere near all of them in the poll, obviously.

For the sake of consistency, please tick a box only if you've been diagnosed with the condition by a professional qualified to do so, AND you believe yourself that you most likely meet or met the currently used DSM (or in the case of chronic fatigue, CDC) diagnostic criteria.

The ICD-10 uses very different criteria; you may have a disorder by one's standards and not the other's, and the names are often different as well.

I'm not particularly expecting to see any surprising trends, but you never know.

Feel free to discuss below. :)

I would have put 'a personality disorder' as an option if there were enough poll space. But it's probably better to leave that one if any because the personality disorders can be individually listed and polled separately. I might do that later.

Edit: Please feel free forever delayed and anyone else to include personality disorders in the 'Diagnosis not covered by list' category of the second question. :)

I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder. and phobias.

Then I accidentally checked panic disorder instead of anxiety disorder. Sorry! :(

You need an option in the first question for people who have not been diagnosed with any of those things.

I've been diagnosed with a couple of somethin-er-other anxiety disorders... and depression... and insomnia... panic as well... which is an issue that had become alot less sever until recently :(

oh yeah... and agoraphobia... which is covered in the phobia's section, but these days I have a job and am actually doing half-decent on that. still work is simply a extension of home for me and I feel safe there (or used to before layoffs and recent controversy) so it kinda doesnt count. I still freak out at the grocery store.

I keep meaning to go to a psychiatrist, but I'd too paranoid to say anything

I'll just say that I wouldn't be surprised if I developed schizophrenia later on in life, though.

The poll won't let me vote because there is no "none" option in the first part.

I have never been diagnosed with any mental or personality disorder but I suspect I may have ADD or ADHD.

Yup. I'm probably the odd one out - but I don't have any mental disorder. But the poll won't let me not tick any on the first part.

Diagnosed with 'Schizoid personality disorder', which sadly isn't on the list.

Ugh, I forgot to check 'A Phobia'. I hate phones. I hate using them. I don't panic over them, but I'll repeat for emphasis that I hate them. I refuse to use one.

How about not necessarily 'disorders' but 'differences'????

I agree with Tanwen. Although I'm fascinated with psychology (particularly psychopathology) and probably plan on going to grad school for a degree in Clinical Psychology...I do believe that "disorders" is a word with such negative connotations. In my opinion, everyone has "disorders," just not to the same extent as everyone else. Just like there's an autistic spectrum, I believe there's a spectrum for all "disorders." A spectrum for OCD, a spectrum for depression, a spectrum for biopolar, etc. But what do I know...

Anyhow, I clicked "a phobia" because of my social phobia. I did not click ADHD because I consider there to be a significant difference between the hyperactive component (ADHD) and the inattentive component (ADD). But if you want, you can include a vote for ADHD. Also...I'm kinda of a hypochondriac, and I don't believe that was listed...

IF you make it to 25 without developing schizo, you're probably home free. But there are other mental disorders you can develop later than that, so don't despair.

To the people saying you can't vote...

Have you tried ticking the 'No diagnosis at all' box in the second section? I intended that you didn't have to tick anything in the first section if that was the case. Will it not let you do that?

Difference is not the same as disorder. The negative connotation is there for a reason: by definition, a trait is a disorder only if it significantly affects your (or in some cases other people's) life for the worse. If you've been diagnosed with something and the trait doesn't do that, you shouldn't have been diagnosed with it in the first place, however unusual it is. Besides, for clarity and to encourage people to stick to what they've been formally diagnosed with and believe they meet the criteria for, I tried to use the official DSM titles. For example there is no 'panic difference' in the DSM-IV or anywhere else and it could be confusing.

No Autism?

That's already been polled and discussed extensively and there's only so much room per poll. It's also less common than some others I've had to leave out, e.g. personality disorders, dissociative disorders and sexual disorders (which, incidently, I thought would really warrant a poll to themselves in a place like this), so there's no discrimination going on, don't worry. ;)

Thanks for reminding me of that issue. In case anyone else is wondering about that, the term ADHD currently encompasses conditions that meet the inattentive criteria but not the hyperactive-impulsive criteria, and vice versa. In other words, 'ADD' is no longer a used diagnosis. If you were diagnosed with ADD back when it was, the term they'd now use for you is ADHD. If they were to elaborate a bit they'd add 'Predominantly Inattentive Type', but it would still come under the umbrella term ADHD, so you're welcome to tick that box. :)

I happen to know that because I was diagnosed this year. The therapist thinks I meet the hyperactive-impulsive criteria as well but I'm not entirely sure. Definitely meet the inattentive criteria though. I love the Internet because it's suited to, and rather like, my mind: limitless opportunities for distraction, no pressure to make either input or output initially go in sequential order, and many windows running at once to switch between at any given moment. And no one's around to see me so I can enjoy rocking, swaying, fidgeting and periodic pacing about as much as I need in order to 'power up' my technically-close-to-sleeping brain.

As for hypochondriasis, I've just found out that's classed as a somatoform disorder, which isn't covered. Sorry about that. I might make another poll for some of the ones I've left out. Don't hold me to that though, it really depends on which things have my divided attention at the time. Unfortunately, by this afternoon having interest in this subject and even this forum may feel like a distant memory, which is why I avoid making threads at all unless I'm feeling fairly confident I'll manage to commit to them for a while.

Isn't it not AD(H)D nowadays?

I do with they'd stop changing the names of things.

Thanks for letting me know. So the people who selected 'No diagnosis at all' had selected one from the first section? Or were they just able to answer one section only for some reason? Anyway, I've changed 'a parasomnia' to 'none of these'. Sorry it's in the middle but the options at both ends had already been selected by people.

It worked now. I ticked "none of these". I seem to be the only person with no mental disorders up to this point, which seems a bit weird to say the least.

Thank you very much for clearing up my confusion with ADHD/ADD or AD(H)D or whatever! It's okay that you didn't include somatoform disorders, I understand that there's a limited amount of space and I suppose somotoform disorders aren't as popular as, say, bipolar, depression, phobias, etc. I think it was a good idea to make this thread; I'm also interested in finding out how many AVEN-ites have been diagnosed with..."disorders."
