When You Are Old And Grey (1953)

An awful debility,

A lessened utility,

A loss of mobility

Is a strong possibility.

In all probability

I'll lose my virility

And you your fertility

And desirability,

And this liability

Of total sterility

Will lead to hostility

And a sense of futility,

So let's act with agility

While we still have facility,

For we'll soon reach senility

And lose the ability ...

Discuss :D ... In Song Form ... :D

Infertility is not a debility,

For there's no sex in my life---yipee!

My mental facility,

And mobile ability,

Is intact to be all I can be!

My hair may be grey,

But I wash it away....

Then with my brown tresses,

And beautiful dresses,

I Tango all night and all day!

I love being older,

For now I am bolder,

And can speak my mind as I please!

So? I'm older than fifty,

But I think it's nifty,

To look toward the future with glee!

I'm grey...and I like it that way!! Besides, I'd rather have my naturally curly hair than color in my hair.

I shouldn't have posted what I said because I think women (and men) should have whatever hair color they want, including grey. I've been a bottle blonde since I was 15 and will do it as long as I'm sentient just because that's what I want. I mainly mean (and should have said so) that I don't like grey hair as part of a stereotype of older people as having less consequence than younger people.

At 55 I'm filled with glee.

I met somebody just like me.

In only 3 short weeks we'll wed,

Combine our lives and share ... a bed!?!?

Now I'm glad I kept on trying,

Not turning 40, quitting, dying.

My hair is silver but my life is gold.

The best is still to come - and I'm old!

I'm not having any luck coming up with a tune.

All I can say for sure is that it won't work with "Louie Louie"

I have a few grey hairs (I have to thank my dad, he started going grey only when he got into his 60s), I officially become a pensioner in 5 months, get my state pension (which will mean I can cut back my hours to part time), get my bus pass and my 10% off all prices in B&Q, and other DIY stores on specific days. I am also planning to spend at least one day with friends...

Didn't mean to start a grey vs dye thingy!

My natural hair color, before I went grey, was dark brown. My ethnic background is Spanish/Italian/Serbian, so, for me, I saw turning grey as suddenly having 'light' hair, and not an 'aging' thing. I had always wished my dark brown hair was black. My personal decision to dye my grey hair dark brown was because it felt awkward (on me) to have 'light' hair in the same way that blonde hair would look strange on me. It wasn't a matter of trying to 'hide' my age. I clearly don't do that as my conversations are liberally sprinkled with comments that quite obviously give away my age.

I think grey hair looks great, especially for people with blue eyes. But that's just my opinion. I think blue eyes/grey hair is a really attractive combination, maybe for the same reason that blue eyes/blonde hair is also complementary.

But Sally is right, people should have/do whatever is comfortable for them.

And lucky you mackat5! I would love to have curly hair! But grey or brown, my hair is straight as a stick and I never did figure out how to 'do' hair.

Anyway....gotta go practice Argentine dancing now. Just got new shoes from Buenos Aires and have to break them in, on the 4'x5' practice floor I just laid down. (It's entertaining for my parrots to watch their pet human ;) ).

Well for some of us guys hair color will be a moot issue when we get old because hair will be a thing of the past (read bald).

I'm not as talented as some of you guys so I'll quote The Beatles song 'When I'm 64':

When I get older losing my hair,

Many years from now,

Will you still be sending me a valentine

Birthday greetings bottle of wine?

If I'd been out till quarter to three

Would you lock the door,

Will you still need me, will you still feed me,

When I'm sixty-four?

oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oooo

You'll be older too, (ah ah ah ah ah)

And if you say the word,

I could stay with you.

I could be handy mending a fuse

When your lights have gone.

You can knit a sweater by the fireside

Sunday mornings go for a ride.

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,

Who could ask for more?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me,

When I'm sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage

In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear

We shall scrimp and save

Grandchildren on your knee

Vera, Chuck, and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,

Stating point of view.

Indicate precisely what you mean to say

Yours sincerely, Wasting Away.

Give me your answer, fill in a form

Mine for evermore

Will you still need me, will you still feed me,

When I'm sixty-four?

Hammerhead, I once knew a fellow in highschool who was going bald. And I think at the time he was about 17. So some of this is not just for those of us who are getting..........older.....

Old to me keeps extending out 10 years from whatever age I am now, although I do call myself old to others because otherwise they'll think I'm self-deluded.

Ugh. I wouldn't want to feel the way I did at seventen: headstrong and stupid.

I certainly don't feel old. And by no means am I grey (as long as I keep shaving and visiting my stylist regularly. *coughs*).

I can say that I remember being able to do at twenty all of the things I was able to do at twenty, and that was probably nice, because I miss being able to do some of those things, now. But, other than that, I don't really feel any older than I did then.

I'm with everyone else: I'll start to think about feeling old in another ten years.

Ask me again in ten years, and I will likely tell you the same.

A different kind of ability

wisdom mixed with sensitivity

a carefree sense and amiability

look closer, there's agility

not everybody grow up

but those who do, return back

as old as the sea

fresh and free, come and see

Bright honesty, reliability

not too much effort, sufficiency

transparency, baby's gaze, she

he, sheer susceptibility

come along this trip we go

for so long

all things new

no matter how back they go

and so we go and we go

and we go.

coloring my hair just got to be a never ending chore so I quit several years ago and received the surprise of my life!! family and friends were so happy and think I look great in what I dub salt and pepper hair. but coloring my hair or not didn't change me as a person, morals ,ethics, values, etc. remained the same, I don't know what it's like in other countries, but in the US, there is way too much pressure on physical appearance, and no, I am not the elephant lady or any other wierd physicality!!

The patent reality

Of asexuality

S' in all probability

A heightened ability

To see the futility

Of pompous virility

And tail-chasing sillity

And dumb knuckledraggery

And chest-thumping swaggery

And big badass braggery

:D

Some doggerel, or rather chimperel.

Chimp A in the trees

Ignores arthritic knees

Doesn’t care about age

Except at the stage

When he grabs at that vine

And Chimp B says “That’s mine!”

And snatches it away

and Chimp A falls, to lay

on the ground in a mope

feeling like such a dope.

He thinks, “So I’m old

and can’t be so bold

but oh, what the hell

I’ll probably do as well

To just stagger slowly on

Looking pitiful and wan

And when Chimp B says to me,

“What a shame, your bum knee!”

I’ll say nothing crass

Just swiftly kick him in the ass

And grab that damn vine

And go drink my wine.

cozy n. bizzy

I am going to let my hair go all gray and long - looking forward to being an evil old crone!

I'll have a little cottage in the woods with all my little art objects in it and bake bread and

bask in having time to myself (and hopefully not have to work anymore, waaaa - will Social

Security still be there for me?).

And maybe one of those little beepers in case I fall and break my hip and no one's around. ;)

Harry Chapin - Dreams Go By

There you stand in your dungarees

Looking all grown up and so very pleased

When you write your poems they have so much to say

When you speak your dreams it takes my breath away

You know I want to be a ball player

A regular slugging fool

But I guess our dreams must wait awhile

Until we finish school

And so you and I

We watch our years go by

We watch our sweet dreams fly

Far away, but maybe someday

I don't know when

But we will dream again

And we'll be happy then

Till our time just drifts away

There you stand in your wedding dress

You're so beautiful that I must confess

I'm so proud you have chosen me

When a doctor is what you want to be

You know I want to be a painter, girl

A real artistic snob

But I guess we'll have our children first

You'll find a home, I'll get a job

And so you and I

We watch our years go by

We watch our sweet dreams fly

Far away, but maybe someday

I don't know when

But we will dream again

And we'll be happy then

Till our time just drifts away

Listen to the seasons passing

Listen to the wind blow

Listen to the children laughing

Where do broken dreams go?

There you stand in your tailored suit

So many years gone by, but you're still so cute

You take the car to go and meet the bus

When our grandchildren come to visit us

You say you should have been a ballerina, babe

There are songs I should have sung

But I guess our dreams have come and gone

You're 'sposed dream when you are young

(Only thing I don't agree with is the sposta dream when you are young part. All I can think of it to mean is that once you stop dreaming, you are dead.)
