Islander9, baby, you and me, we could go places  !

What does the "9" mean, please? (Ok, so I'm only polite when I want something - fine! You've found me out - can I go now?)

I drink. Not as much as I used to when I was at the bars and/or keg parties twice a weekend. But, yeah, I drink.

Interestingly, most of my friends tend to get slutty drunk, but I just knock things over and laugh at things that aren't funny. But I do that when I'm sober. :D

I dont really drink, I am a huge fan of wine, but I only drink it once or twice a month. I dont like the taste of hard alchohol, unless its really diguised and I dont like the feeling of being drunk.

Yes, I drink, when I have company. As a Belgian resident, drinking wine with your meal and beer the rest of the time is pretty much de rigeur. I don't know many people at all who don't drink.

The main benefit I see in alcohol is that it allows me to open up when I'm talking to people. So I rarely drink when I'm alone, becuase it seems pretty pointless.

I rarely drink to excess, though... I always make sure I can walk home at the very least.

Ewwwww. Maybe it's because I'm underage, but I really can't seem myself drinking, or enjoying the idea of drinking. . It's the same thing as smoking to me, really. There isn't any benefits of drinking ( and if there is, I swear there's better ways to get the same - or better - benefits from other things ), and. . yeah. I can think of easier ways to "open up" or relax, so thanks but no thanks. But if you like it, that's fine. Just don't get me near it. . >>;

I gave up due to cognitive issues. It was interfering with my thought patterns. Don't know why I didn't do it earlier, life's so much more fun without it, and far healthier to.

I used to drink all the time. Not in order to get drunk, but because I was a bit pretentious, always going after exotic wine vintages and unusual alcoholic drinks such as green/yellow chartreuse, mead, authentic real ale, homemade cider etc.. However I no longer drink alcohol as I see little point to it - besides it damages the liver.

Loki, have you ever had late picked Zinfandel? I've recently discovered the joys of really great wines, which I couldn't possibly get drunk on because I want to make it last and can only afford to have about half a glass a day.

Hmm, never heard of it till now. I understand from the Web that it's derived from a Southern Italian grape variety which is now grown in California and very popular over there.

I have drunk many Italian wines in the past but only from Northern Italy. To be honest when it comes to drinking expensive wine I always preferred the sweet dessert wines like the Australian ones from the Barossa valley.Muscat and Eiswein- (Eiswein/Icewine comes from grapes harvested after a bitter frost in c.October, the water content is frozen to ice and eliminated with the sweet sugary element left behind to form Eiswein). The best Eiswein now comes from Canada not Germany, due to global warming.

I have hardly drunk any alcohol at all for roughly 2 years(and don't plan on having more than one glass every 3-6 months in the future) , but I find it useful to find out about wines etc. such as Zinfandel as it's very important when having guests to have a wide variety of drinks available. I have an Austrian uncle and aunt who are very pro-temperance(due to being devout Catholics), and they often invite 30-60 people over to a party, and then have nothing more to offer them than a couple of bottles of mineral water, 3-4 bottles of fruit juice and perhaps 2-5 bottles of cheap wine. They don't seem to understand that in order for people to be comfortable in a (cocktail) party they need to have a drink in their hands at all times even if it's only mineral water.

I adore Muscat. Dessert wines are also a fav. Elysium is heaven. Well...literally Elysium is a sort of suburb of heaven for martyrs, but the wine with that name is fantastic. And it's the perfect compliment to dark chocolate. I also like Australian ports. Sweetish and nearly mapley.

Elysium seems to be a dessert wine deriving from a Black Muscat grape variety - might well buy it in the future if it's not merely for the American market. As regards port/sherry and other high-alcohol drinks, I'm afraid I'm a bit of a purist. For me, "real"(!) vodka must be either Polish or Russian, the port I buy must come from Portugal, Sherry from Spain, and Schnapps-like drinks must come from Austria or Germany or possibly Yugoslavia. Oh, and the best cider and specialist wines is usually the homemade variety - up to a few years ago I was fortunate in having various relatives who made their own cider or elderberry wine etc., which was IMHO far better in quality to what gets sold in the shops.

I haven't had a drink since christmas. I've been drunk badly 3 times since I got to uni, and done absolutley mortifyingly embarasing things every time. I don't get the physical side of the hangover (unless I drink wine, just a sip will do it) but I spend at least 3 days after regretting it, and once I start drinking I have trouble stopping, so I just don't start any more.

I drink frequently, but small amounts.

Mostly spirits - single malt Scotch whiskies and vodka straight from the freezer and also wines.

I enjoy the flavours and the mild inebriation, but never drink to get "pissed" - been there, done that; really don't like pavement pizza with extra stomach-acid and diced carrot toppings...then the morning after...noooo!

I'm contemplating giving up alcohol as it makes me sleepy yet funnily enough, it actually stops me from sleeping at night.

After the encouragement from some of my friends I took a sip of wine, and it is just plain gross. Furtermore, who knows what I'll do when I lose control, I think the bible calls it apocalyps :D.

I don't drink at all, not even at a special occasion anymore. I used to have the odd drink or two when I went on a night out (which wasn't/isn't very often), but only watermelon bacardi brezzer. I also had unalcoholic drinks before and after. (If I wasn't on medication I probably would have ended up being an alcoholic in my late teen years! Thank goodness for my meds! :) )

I didn't like the taste of any other alcoholic drink apart from bacardi breezer. I've tried bacardi and coke, which was ok, but I didn't like the idea of drinking coke (with all the sugar, additives, etc). I never liked the taste of any wine or beer. Sometimes I used to drink as it made me feel more relaxed, but when I was sobering up a couple of hours later, it made me feel down and depressed :( , which wasn't good at all!

When I became vegan, I decided to become a teetotal. I didn't/don't like the idea of intoxicating my body with poison either or damaging my liver!

:D

I don't like the thought of imbibing a substance that changes one's behaviour, potentially in an embarrassing way.

I can enjoy myself socially without alcohol. Perhaps I've just been lucky enough to meet the right friends.

  • 2 weeks later...

I drink beer almost everyday, but one bottle of beer a day during dinner can hardly be considered "drinking alcohol" - it is not addictive, cannot bring drunkness, actually is more a kind of food than of "drink"

Too true! I and my non-drinking friends have as much fun as my drinking friends, perhaps more, and we don't get hangovers, throw up, poison ourselves, or do things we regret! It is win win not to drink, at least for me :)

I know some people find it easier to relax after a drink or two, and that doesn't bother me, but I do feel disturbed at the mindset that is frequently extremely drunk.

Do I drink? I'm Spanish

Yeah, I do drink. I'm not an alcoholic, but I like to drink once in a while. I don't drink too much, but I do get drunk sometimes. I always rembember everything I've never thrown up, so I'm good with it. I can stay without drinking with no problem as long as I'm allowed to drink. Even if it doesn't seem to make sense, it does. If I'm in a place where I'm underage I get alcohol cravings, just because it's forbidden. Otherwise, I'm fine without it.

Honestly, I don't think I know anybody who never drinks. I have a friend that usually doesn't because he drives, but when he stays at my appartment he does (not too much though).

I think we (Spaniards in general) drink a lot  . Going out here, involves drinking, usually getting totally wasted. Most people in college do it at least Thursdays with the people from where they study, and Saturdays in their hometowns, with their friends. The "worst" part of it is that we aren't exactly rich, so we can't afford drinking on the clubs. What do we do? we go to the supermarket, but the alcohol, and drink it in public places, such as parks, streets, and plazas (no, you don't want to know how they end up looking like). Then, when we're already drunk we go to the clubs to dance, and maybe have another few drinks, to keep up. To give an idea, most people meet around midnight to start drinking, and go back home later than 6 am (yes, the classrooms are deserted on Fridays)

People start doing this earlier though... I'd say the average age for start drinking is 16, but probably is lower. I think that now, you are supposed to be 18 to drink, but the fact that nobody is even sure shows how much is the law actually inforced

I must also add, that this isn't my prefered way of partying. Staying home with a few friends and some weed beats it for sure! (I know, it isn't healthy and all that, but I have to die of something  ) And that way I also avoid dealing with clingy drunks that forget the meaning of "personal space"

Don't like the taste or smell.

Tried it when I was younger but now avoid like the plague.

No-one gets why I (a student) don't drink......

When I say I don't like the taste I'm met with looks of disbelief.

I polled "occasionally, but not that often"

If I hadn't drunk so much wine this evening, I might have been able to provide a more coherent answer :)

At home, when my parents do. At school, well, next Friday will be the second time in three years...

I'm a booze snob, however. I will only drink wine from a bottle with a cork, and beer that is a)from Europe/the UK or b)american microbrewery. (the German microbrewery beer...*drool* I wish that I could import it...)

cc, I used to drink only wine from bottles-with-corks too but then several A-NZ vinyards moved to screwcaps (to prevent their wines becoming 'corked'), including two of my favourites...my fancy cork-pulling machine

(brought all the way from France by one of my brothers) hasnt become redundant -yet. It may do in the not-distant future tho'.

I tried to poll but kept getting the message "error cannot display page...." Did I vote 1, twice, or didn't get through?

I drink as I please, but I don't do it often. Alcohol is the super drug: Whatever ails you, it cures you
