I'm always curious to know which of my character traits are shared with other asexuals, one is that I hate the smell and taste of alcohol. I've been told that it "loosens you up" and lowers your inhibitions, but I don't like being out of control of myself. Also, the definition of 'intoxication' is "the state of being poisoned" which puts me off a little.

I hope I have enough options, please tell me if you want a choice other than those listed.

I'd like to see where this goes.

Maybe I'll sing you all a song from the temperance movement

I don't. I can't stand the flavor, and furthermore, I can't stand the idea of losing precious, precious control over things like judgment and discretion. It is for these same reasons allergy medicine and I do not get along.

So...I'm not sure which option best fits me. I don't think it's gross, exactly. Unless it's beer. Then, yes, yes it is gross. And I have tried some drinks but had no interest whatsoever in finishing them or requesting another.

...I do, however, have strong feelings about Coke (not Pepsi *gag*).

By the way, for the recovered alcoholics on the board, perhaps a "don't, but did" option would be fitting.

I drink very often. I dont mind the loss of control, its nice to just let go.

From what i can tell Americans are alot more against drinking than the English, here its a huge part of our student culture, going to the pub most nights and getting properly drunk at least once a fortnight.

I can't stand the taste of beer--any beer. I do like red wines and some vodka drinks. I just get giggly and rather 'doofy' as Julie says when I drink and it helps me sleep. When I do drink it's to facilitate sleeping because that's its chief side effect, which means I don't drink socially because it's rude to konk out at someone's dinner table.

I tried a sip of beer when I was 6 (still remember it was gross), wine at a wedding once, and wine at Thanksgiving once. Not impressed either time, but I really didn't try all that much. My reservations are mainly what Julie said. Plus, alcoholism runs in my family. I know it doesn't have to become a problem, but why start when it can? It's like skydiving with a parachute that probably works.

btw, voted #4. I fit best in that one I guess.

It's kind of sweet sometimes. (Not that you're not sweet when you're sober, dearest.) And I suddenly become one of the most hilarious people on the planet, so that's fun times.

Oh Americans drink a lot too, especially on college campuses. I purposely picked a college with no fraternities to avoid that whole craziness. It's a big part of socializing in the "real world" as well, and I've been made to feel quite out of it when I say I don't drink a few times, but in general it's not usually an issue.

I think this depends on what college you went to. Students at my school definately did a lot of drinking. When I studied abroad, I lived next door to English Erasmus students and above Irish Erasmus students and they outdrank the Americans I knew who drank and also outsung everyone else around. However, I am sure there are as many students per capita in the US who drink frequently. It is also a big part of student culture here. Most American universities wish it wasn't and try to make most things dry (my school required a security guard for any parties, hehe) but students still find their way to bars, etc.

I checked Eww gross! I have tried a sip of nearly every (ok, hyperbole) alcoholic beverage out there because I wanted to see what was so good about alcohol but the only thing I've found that I've liked is a Mudslide. Granted, the reason I think it's so good is because of the ice cream. Most drinks taste equally as good in the 'virgin' form as they do with the alcohol. Besides, most alcohols burn on the way down (why do you want your drinks to do that?). And in enough quantities, it would dehydrate me and I do that well enough on my own. Ironically, every time I've had a sip (probably doesn't even count as a sip) of alcohol in the last year, I've had a car problem within the next week. So now I'm superstitious and especially careful about avoiding alcohol.

Beer is repulsive. It's the major religion in our family so I don't fit in well at that aspect. (Not that our family does nothing but drink beer, it's just eveyrone's 'drug of choice'.) I like liqueurs and Cronos and I have this "malibu and coke" tradition going but after 41 years (well, give or take, I guess I was about 15 or 16 when I started to have drinks) I can honestly say that if it's not there, I don't really care. Only place I'd miss it for sure is around the bonfire.

I'm not sure about Americans being more against drinking, but I think the drinking culture is different. (Not that that statement is based on anything but watching British movies/tv and reading books...!)(And I'm not really sure how to explain what I mean. But I do think that being in a country formed by Puritans forms different attitudes about... a lot of things.)

But American vs. British opinions on drinking is something I've talked about some with my sister, who's also watched the same movies and junk... (We're real experts! ) But America seems to have weird double standards for things like drinking and sex. Like, on one hand we're really conservative about it and quick to pass moral judgement, but on the other hand we seem more than willing to engage in both activities to excess... It's confusing. Though Britain could be very much the same... I've just had the impression that most of Europe is both more open and more moderate in partaking in both...

But the only other drinking culture I've had any experience with is Japan's. It's... definitely different. But that's fairly off-topic, and I'm not quite as experienced in that as some.

But my views on drinking... I enjoy it, both in the 'glass of wine with dinner' and heavier drinking senses, but I rarely drink these days, mostly for lack of people to drink with. My parents (who I live with) are completely against drinking and none of my friends here drink, really.

I've only been drunk once, and it wasn't really a 'loss of control.' Like, I laughed a lot at silly things, but there was still part of my brain that seemed fully 'sober' and kept telling the rest of my brain it was dumb to laugh at such silly things.

So, while I enjoy the taste of alcohol, I don't think I'd want to get drunk again and don't drink very often these days.

I've never even bothered to try it. It's physically bad for you, can make you do stupid things, losing control I've always seen as bad, etc. I've never understood the urge to do things you know can kill you. I've never understood the urge to make something make you act like an idiot. If you want to act stupid, do it! Don't make booze the excuse. I'm the only one on my rugby team that doesn't drink. This is my second year, 4th semester, and each semester we lose some girls and gain more, and I've always been the only one that doesn't drink. And rugby is a big drinking sport, they have Drink-Ups and Pre-Games at least once a week. And sometimes I go for a while just to hang out, but never more than 2 or 3 hours at the very most, because I hate being around drunks. I personally think its immature no matter your age.

I dont drink very often, but on some occasions I will drink wine or mixed drinks. I like Amoretta, Kahlua, and other liqueurs, too, and I like to put them on vanilla ice cream like a sundae topping.

I CAN"T STAND BEER!! I really tried, but I just can't choke that stuff down.

And that is one reason I had to leave Texas in disgrace ... !!

I get extremely uncomfortable drinking around other people due to the possible loss of control, so I seldom have more than one drink in public. This is true even when I'm with close friends, which is kind of sad, but it seems to be something that I can't overcome.

I sort of like the taste of alcohol, and will actually drink more if I am alone, but then I just fall asleep.

Since that's all it does for me, I don't think it's really worth the money to buy it. I don't foresee it ever becoming a problem for me.

Fourth option. I've never had any interest in alcohol. The few I've tasted (beer and what I assume was heavily-spiked punch, once each) I didn't like. But I was little both times. I've never had an iota of a desire to be drunk--I find it a turn-off. As for cocktails and mixed drinks (or the "virgin" variety thereof), well, I've never had the pleasure of experiencing any so I can't comment.

Early on I came to the realization that, as far as I'm concerned, one or two drinks are fine but six or seven are more trouble than they're worth. I've found that getting blotto (ever notice how many synonyms there are for 'drunk'?) creates more problems than it solves; while getting lightly toasted isn't a bad idea now and then.

Two other good things about drinking:

- Introduced me to the one, single and only dirty joke I've ever found funny. (Why is American beer like having sex in a canoe?)

- Gave me an appreciation of the wonder that is Guiness Stout.

I drink. Sometimes heavily, sometimes often, but within a certain limitation that I, or my boyfriend, will set for that specific time period. I used to have major control issues about drinking, and any other types of intoxication, and I wasa more or less a straight edge throughout high school - not a bad thing at that age for me. Then I went off to college, and like many others at UConn, discovered the joys of drunkeness. More specifically, I learned to enjoy the out of control state, so long as I was within the company of people I trusted to take care of me, and not humiliate me or endanger me. Depending on my mood, I may drink to get incredibly smashingly drunk, or just to get tipsy. Regardless, I rarely drink alone, because I prefer LS to have a watchful eye on me and cut me off if necessary.

As for preference, hard alcohol all the way. Beer is disgusting, wine gets me drunk too fast, as well as giving me a bad headache, but vodka is quite nice. And grain is the devil, espeically with kool-aid...ugh.

I drink Watney's Cream Ale. It's divinely inspired.

The best fermentation in the world.

It's heavy, complex in flavor, and enough to rivet my attention.

Sure I drink, probably once or twice a week. I've drunk since I was 15 but I've certainly become a lot more sensible in my drinking habits since then! I like strong lager (Stella, San Miguel, Kronenbourg) and Bourbon (Jack Daniels, Jim Bean) but I've tried most drinks in my career as a drinker...

I never get out-of-control drunk though - I've never been able to. I reach the point where I'm getting rather too drunk and just stop. Its quite a good anti-vomiting mechanism, being able to judge when you've had enough!

Ah this is probably where i get my assumptions from... alot of my american friends on line are at university and staying on campus, it freaks me out when they say they have to hide alcohol and things... at my university all the halls of residence have a bar attached to them and the main campus has a bar thats open from about 11am onwards for people who want a pint at lunchtime and things... the students at uni almost actively promote drinking and the lecturers take it as a way of life, i couldnt imagine an english university trying to promote a "dry" campus ;)

My drink of choice (since eveyrone else seems to be listing theirs) is lager, stella if i can get it, if not then one of the cheap ones, carling, grolsch, kronenburg, becks etc. I used to be a huge fan of budweiser but its actually rather tasteless now.

Im not a fan of sweet things so most designer drinks i havent tried, and i rarely manage a whole cocktail.

And since a very very bad night with bottles of vodka and aftershock and possibly some tequila, i dont drink shots very often.

As for drinking compared to getting drunk... I rarely get completely smashed, i drank till i was unconcious once which was horrible, and a few times a year i drink till i have memory black outs (usually at major events like balls, end of exams, birthday that kind of thing), but most of the time im aware where i am, what im doing and what my friends are doing... im usually the most sober one and end up walking my friends home and making sure they dont do things they will regret.

I enjoy drinking occasionally, and I can get pretty drunk sometimes. Never to the point of blacking out or losing complete control, though I did lose some memory once. I've never found alcohol to cause me to lose control, just to losen up some of my inhibitions. And I don't seem to have inhibited desires to do anything truly humiliating or dangerous, so I don't worry about it. I enjoy mixed drinks with rum and vodka, and wine primarily, though I also like quality beer sometimes. Liqueurs (sp?) are nice, though expensive. Tequila is my absolute favorite, I have so much fun after a shot or two, but I only want to do it every once in a while. I hate whiskey except in extreme moderation as too much makes me feel like my reality is fading away to nothing.

I only drink once every month or two, among friends that I trust. I never drink alone, it is too expensive and if I feel that bad I can just sleep, for free.

Yas...

I do not like beer.

I do not like whiskey, unless it's mixed with Sprite.

I like the mixed drinks okay.

I'm 19, so I can't legally drink yet, but I've never had a drink that wasn't given to me by my parents. But then the last time my mom gave me a nearly-empty bottle of whiskey and told me to finish it off, and then got mad when I did. So now I'm not going to drink anything else until I'm safely 21, just to avoid that sort of mindless backpedaling.

Of course, I could still drink around my dad. He gave me a Louisiana Daquiri once.
