Friendship Quality in Asexual Individuals

Hello, we have a research request from Adel Ortega. It is the following.

My name is Adel Ortega, I am a graduate student in the Department of Psychology at California State University, Fullerton. I am conducting a research study to understand how high-quality platonic friendships impact the life satisfaction and psychological well-being of individuals on the Asexual spectrum.
 
Participants must self-identify on the Asexual spectrum, reside in the United States, and be at least 18 years of age. Participants will be asked to complete a secure online survey that takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete.

Uh, sorry, turned off by the preliminary questions. "Trans man" isn't a gender identity and "woman" isn't a sex.

Trans man isn't a gender identity?   Surely plenty of trans guys would describe their gender that way..?

Usually, it's described as being just a man, although it varies on what the person themselves wants, so I dont really agree with @verily-forsooth-egads's initial comment.

I think it’s more that the options in this survey are just strange. The options in this survey differentiate trans man and trans woman from just man and woman. Also, it lists “man” and “woman” in reference to the sex you were assigned at birth. As far as I’m aware in the U.S. we just put male or female on birth certificates and nobody is assigned as a man or woman at birth here. This survey is meant for Americans.

 

My suggestion would just be to rephrase the options to something like “man, woman, nonbinary, other: (please describe)” for gender identity and add another question that says “do you identify as transgender? Yes or no.” I’d remove the question about sex as assigned at birth because for many trans people it has very little to do with our current social interactions and friendships (which is what this study is actually about) compared to our actual gender identity.

Ah yep that makes sense. I didn't see the questions as the survey is locked to people outside the US.

I just got told I don't qualify for the study because I said I'm a straight heterosexual male. This isn't a study on all asexual categories because even as a cishet male I still fall under the umbrella of grey ace. I do not need nor do I seek sexual gratification from a partner, however if my partner were to want to have sex I'm willing, but I'm just as satisfied having them in my life, maybe cuddling on the couch watching a movie or simply talking.

But I thought the -sexual part of heterosexual means sexual, not asexual.

I agree that this survey could have used more options during the identity portion so it could better accommodate nuanced orientations. 
 

I don’t see how weight and height are relevant, and the wording on some questions wasn’t conducive to the rating scale.
 

I hope that grad student is able to get something out of this survey, but I fail to see how these questions will provide a direct correlation between overall wellbeing and a single friend connection.
