Hi everyone!
Let’s play a Japanese word chain game in romaji (しりとり: Shiritori)!

How to play:

  • Each new word should start with the last letter of the previous word.
  • Please add the meaning of your word in English (in parentheses) so everyone can follow along.

Updated rule (for more fun):

If a word ends with sounds like yo, shi, or tsu, you can either keep the whole sound (shi → shi…) or just use the vowel at the end (shi → i…). Both are totally fine!

Example 1 (easy):

neko (cat) → okashi (sweets) → ichigo (strawberry) → onigiri (rice ball) → ikura (salmon roe) → akachan (baby) → niji (rainbow)

Example 2 (with variation):
neko (cat) → koneko (kitten) → kodomo (child) → momo (peach) → mono (thing)

Who wants to join? Let’s have fun and maybe learn some Japanese words too!

I’ll start: ringo (apple)
Who’s next? Please use a Japanese word starting with O and write it in romaji!

I'm not sure to start the word with u or su, since in one example @harmonic turquoise you used su instead of u. I guess someone could choose?

but let's go with..

Edit: bad timing xD. changing my word;

nomu (to drink)

Since the previous word was Eiga (film), the next word can start with either a or ga—choose whichever you like! I’ll go with a variation:

garasu (glass)

So the next person can choose a word that starts with u or su:D

Thanks for the clarification :). And I was wondering, since garasu is a word that I assume would be written in katakana, is it considered a japanese word? or foreign somehow?

@Sarah-Sylvia Fun fact! "Garasu" actually comes from the Dutch word "glas". Nowadays it’s a normal Japanese word, usually written in katakana ガラス, but you can also see it in kanji 硝子.

I didn't know a foreign word in katakana could come to have Kanji 😮 that's interesting.
