Book Obsessor
I don't know if this is the right forum for this, so feel free to move it! Hair is an odd but can bring a lot of conflict within. I for one have been thinking of getting my haircut for a year, maybe 2 now and am sure this is not just an impulsive decision. I want to get my haircut (I right now have what society would consider a girls hair cut) I don't like how it makes me perceived and makes me feel. I want to come in with a solid plan, so my mom can't say no. She has already said she does this every 10 years or so and always regrets getting her hair cut, so I shouldn't get my haircut, but I want to. I just want to make sure I don't regret it. I was wondering if anyone had any advice like don't do x and y. Or make sure you look for blank and blank when choosing your haircut. I was also wondering if anyone had a place to find good haircuts (I am looking for a short haircut but longer. I have straight hair.) AppleButterCRINGE
To make sure you like the look there are filters and websites that can show you what you would look like with certain haircuts via editing. I'm not sure what would help you convince your mom, you could try phrasing it as a seasonal change, or emphasize the function. Like, it is a short, fun haircut for the summer that will keep your neck cool. Short haircuts are easier to care for, look appropriate in any setting, and can be worn with no or minimal styling straight out of bed. Besides it will grow out to a short bob within a few months, so even if you don't like the look that will be remedied fast. You could probably tell her how long you have wanted this. It's unlikely you will dislike it after having this much time to mull it over. I've cut my hair short a few times, I just use Pinterest to look for reference images. Its super easy and you can easily show your barber what you want.
verily-forsooth-egads
It's none of your mom's damn business. Next time you go in for a "trim," tell the hairdresser what you want and they'll do it. This isn't a major life decision and it's not a tattoo. It'll grow back.
Green181
I used to have hair that went down to the base of my back, but I never liked it. It was constantly tied up in a ponytail, out of the way. I'd wanted to cut it for about 7 years - I used to imagine getting a pixie cut but didn't feel confident enough to pull it off. Then about 2.5 years ago, I went for a big chop and now keep it in a bob (between chin length and shoulder length), and it's so much easier to manage. I'm still thinking about going for more of an androgynous style. In terms of finding what hairstyle you want to go for: I've just taken some screenshots of people I see online. There were a few YouTubers that had styles similar to what I would want if I went shorter. You can also find complication videos of different hair cuts. Or if you see someone with a style you like, you can screenshot and do an image search on Google to find other similar cuts.

nickolekuebler
I have kind of a long pixie cut, shaved on the one side so that I can show off my industrial piercing. I love this cut cause I like how it frames my face. I also love how easy it is to style and maintain. I got this cut a few years ago now and have stuck with it since I love how easy it is. I also did not spend that much time deciding what I was going to do before I got it cut since I knew that it would grow back if I didn't like it. I think find one that you like and go for it, worst case scenario is that you have to let it grow back out a little bit before you can change it again.
KVA1983
@nickolekuebler Second this! I had the long pixie cut shaved around the back but longer up top to frame the face. Must admit I actually miss it, so easy to maintain. Just wash and go! @Book Obsessor Try https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/short-hairstyles-for-women-to-inspire-your-next-chop https://www.myglamm.com/glammstudio/short-hairstyles-for-thin-hair Number thirteen is the style I had but slightly longer top layer. They have some lovely cuts currently featured.
daveb
If anyone has excess hair, I wouldn't mind a bit more myself. I do wear mine long enough for a ponytail. For me, with my hair being so curly, it's actually the easiest option. Not to mention, shaving it off or keeping it really short would be dysphoric for me. People should be free to do what they want with their own hair. Even if one tries something and finds they don't like it it does grow back given time, and color can be adjusted if need be.

I have enough thick/dense hair on my head for 4 people and would gladly give up some of it, haha! I'm sort of part way there already (my facial hair is sort of strawberry blond, or was before some of it started turning white).
Luftschlosseule
You could tell your mom that you've been pondering this for years, and also, it might be a good idea to go to a salon and get a consultation. They are trained to know what works with your face shape and hair structure - tell your mom you want this done once, with the professionals. And then look if you can find a queerer hair salon in your area you wanna go to. Good luck 🙂
