Movie Discussion Thread

Hey! I’m making a movie discussion thread since there really isn’t one on here. This one’s plain and simple. It’s just a place to geek out, gossip, or just talk about any movies that we’ve seen, haven’t seen, like or don’t like, etc.

Legend 1985. As a eighty's child films like this were our bread and butter. Definitely worth a watch, especially if you like fantasy based films ♥ xx

I watched Mickey 17 last night and I enjoyed it a lot. It's not Parasite levels of absolutely brilliant but I still found it very fun.

Robert Pattinson going from the Twilight guy to one of the most consistently enthralling actors of present day is quite something.

Don't forget, there is the "last movie you watched" thread. :)

And I recall some "favorite movie" threads. :)

I love movies, especially ones from the 30s and 40s, and some from the 50s, 60s, etc. I'm into sci-fi, adventure, comedy, and other genres. Not a fan of things that are "too" graphic, sexually or in terms of violence, gore, torture, etc. (of course, "too" is a subjective measure). One reason I tend to prefer older movies is they don't get as graphic or gratuitous as many more modern films sometimes do. Just to compare some of the movies I watched most recently, old and new - I was really turned off by a lot of stuff in Love Hurts (a movie from this year), but loved Rear Window. Of course, they are different kinds of movies, but I think that's kind of part of the point. On the other hand, I had different expectations for Love Hurts, while I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting into with Rear Window.

For anyone who has streaming for HBO/Max or Apple TV, you should watch Flow.  It is the best movie I've seen in a long time.  I'm hesitant to say too much about it because I think it is best to watch it without too much discussion beforehand.   No sex.  No humans.  No need for translation, as the talk is all in Cat, Dog, Capybara, and Lemur, with the occasional ascerbic comment in Bird.  (Long list of awards, including Oscar for Best Animated Film.)

Random, I happen to be listening to some Star Wars tunes, but George Lucas's Star Wars were fantastic at framing the conflict between darkness and light, the temptation to cut  corners, to have the ends justify the means or not, the temptation to give in to hatred, however justified it feels. As a secular Buddhist of over 2 decades they really do a great job at representing Buddhism (specifically Zen Buddhism). Since Disney took it over they removed the Buddhism, and the dilemmas are just about whether to be courageous or not, with no serious temptation to follow the path of darkness.

A few weeks ago, I watched Brokeback Mountain. I've heard of it for years, but growing up, I've only heard people make homophobic jokes about it. And just yesterday, I watched Call Me By Your Name because of people referencing it to Disney Pixar's Luca and of course, Lil Nas X's Call Me By Your Name. Funnily enough, with both movies, I felt like they were very slow, and yet when the romance/sexual scenes does happen, it feels like it's out of nowhere. Maybe it's because I feel like the actors aren't selling me on their chemistry. These are highly rated movies and I'm not seeing the appeal. Maybe it's because the slow-burn approach is not doing it for me. Honestly, they made me question... am I just internalizing my homophobia??

And then I thought, nooo, my favorite narrative podcast is about two princes falling in love with each other, The Two Princes by Spotify Studios. And there's plenty of other examples of queer couples that I enjoy in shows. But I think with those examples, the target audience is more family-oriented, thus focusing more on the romance aspect. Because I sure was thinking with Brokeback Mountain and Call Me By Your Name, "this isn't even romantic, it's just sexual".

I may revisit watching these movies someday, maybe with some fresh eyes that can appreciate it more.

I watched the Crow recently since Netflix Germany kindly added it to their rotation, and I am still thinking about it, it was that good. And normally, I am not into revenge action movies, since I saw so many when watching movies with my father, whose favourite actors do a lot of those.

I spoke before in the last movies you watched thread about the main actor's movements, and well, yeah, they are very impressive. But I also liked the atmosphere, the details. It hits a certain spot that not many recent movies hit.

I always have either Dune, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings on my mind, honestly.

The question then is, what audience are those two movies aimed at? Who made those two movies? It really shows when queer content is written for and by straight people. I'm willing to bet The Two Princes is written and produced by people who are themselves queer or gay. The tone and flavor of series is likely more appealing as a result.

Having looked up The Two Princes, I can say another reason you like it so much more? The story ends on the upswing and happy note (and this is telling: "Podcast reviewer Wil Williams wrote positively about The Two Princes, stating that while it "isn't perfect, it is fun, sweet and incredibly enjoyable", citing the "high genre, borderline camp setup" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Princes - camp has been a mainstay in queer content for a very long time) while the two movies Brokeback Mountain & Call Me by Your Name are by all accounts depressing as all get out. They rely on a depressing trope that really needs to die: bury/kill the gays (this can be literal - one of the characters dies in Brokeback or a reset to the "normal" as in Call where one of the characters gets married to a woman).

I think your instincts are right on target really.

That's very reassuring, thank you. You made excellent points. It also reminds me of the "male gaze".

That's also another good point. The queer media that I like to enjoy does have happier endings and are written and created by fellow queer people.

I’m torn on this, because I wanted to say me too, but I a, part of the Marauders fandom, and well, if you know anything about them, know that they’re depressing as hell.

But then again, y mostly only consume aus and non-canon compliant stuff.

As far as queer movies and tv shows go, I also prefer them on the brighter side -take a look at Heartstopper, for example.

I haven't heard of Marauders. I'll have to check that out. I can watch depressing stuff, but sometimes, I would need a break from it. 😂

Ohh yes, I love Heartstopper! I even have the graphic novels and novellas and read them more than once. 😂

The Marauders is a sub-fandom off of Harry Potter, focusing on the adults in the series -mainly James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, though we’ve expanded to a ton of other characters mentioned literally once like Marlene McKinnon or Dorcas Meadowes. It is very gay, but very depressing. Its main format is fanfiction, for obvious reasons, though I know of a few fanfilms and I’ve seen some really well produced yt videos jaja

I watched Alien Romulus earlier today (to be more specific, between midnight and 2 am) and I liked it. I thought it was pretty good. I really enjoyed how everything that gets brought up in movie actually has a purpose. None of the dialogue feels unnecessary (in my opinion) besides some references.

I do think it's references to previous Alien movies sometimes disrupt the tone of the story. Particularly one specific reference near the end of the movie.

Brokeback Mountain is great.

So heartbreaking. I really felt the frustrating pain especially with Heath Ledger's character. Like I wanted to reach out and hug him. 🥺

You are right to point out all the stupid jokes made about it when it was in cinemas. I noticed it too. People were just laughing because "lol gay sex". That's the only thing part of it that people talked about, totally ignoring the emotional and complex personal elements of the story. So I was surprised to enjoy it so much when I first watched it.  No-one bothered to mention that it was actually a really good movie.

YEEESSSSSS!! Spider-Man: Beyond the Spiderverse comes out June 4, 2027!!!! ❤️🖤🕷️🕸️🩷🤍🩵

Honestly, I really regret not seeing the live action Little Mermaid in theaters. That movie is so beautiful. It is very visually stunning to look at!! And Ariel’s tail! 🤩🤩🤩 Gorgeous!! I would have loved to hear Halle Bailey sing with her beautiful voice through those loud speakers! It was such a lovely film. I guess I didn’t go because, at the time, I wasn’t a huge fan of the Little Mermaid in general. Not that I hated it, I was just lame about it like, “Eh, I’ll wait til it hits the streaming apps.” I really regret that now. 😅 It just would’ve been nice to see it on the big screen with my siblings. Cause they even said they wanted to go, but we said no!

😔 God, I’m ashamed. Especially, now since I’ve gained kind of a new love and appreciation for all the Little Mermaid films. I really did like the live action and it was better than I was expecting. Ms. Bailey was absolutely darling and was a perfect fit for Ariel. She even looks like she could be a mermaid/siren! If they ever release it again in theatres, I’m going to see it and I’ll take my little sister who was the one who wanted to go in the first place!!

I saw it in theaters. Hearing Halle Bailey sing, it’s definitely fitting for her to play Ariel. I did love the animated movie. “Poor Unfortunate Souls” is my favorite song and villain song. I wasn’t too interested in the live action, but literally went only to support Halle Bailey.

A little hard to admit, but the last movie I watched was the Minecraft movie.

Spoiler

Look, I'm not feeling cynical enough to list everything I didn't like about it. Just want to say that if I have to give the movie anything besides Jack Black being fun in the same vein as Jim Carrey, it's the idea of the Endermen being eldritch abominations that worm their way into your mind. Not that the film had much to work with in the first place, the Endermen in the actual game are a boring-as-shit slenderman reference that steal things sometimes. I can't give the film much more than that, I just thought this was neat of it.

Any other videogame adaptations I should see? I've already seen the Sonic movies, I quite liked them and I loved Jim Carey's energy as Robotnik and Gerald. The Mario movie has caught my eye for daring to be fully animated in today's age of "it has raytracing, it must be good," and like the Sonic movies I'm sure the games themselves have enough narrative that the movie won't be making itself up as it goes along. I'm interested to see how FNAF carries over to hollywood, but the fixation people had over MatPat from Game Theory being in it doesn't inspire much confidence in me that it won't carry itself on referencing things from the games (like the Minecraft movie somewhat did). I've heard that Detective Pikachu is a solid film, not so much for Borderlands.

I had to watch the Minecraft movie yesterday. I have to say I wasn’t a fan. To be fair, I didn’t want to watch it. But I had to because my whole family dragged me to it. Ugh, I dreaded every second of it. I’m really not a fan of these “video game to movie” films. They are rarely that good. Most of those movies, to me, are a mix of cringe and humor. Like they’ll have really cringey parts with really cringey acting, but then have nice animation or actually funny jokes here and there. Overall, in the end making them “okay” movies. Still don’t like them. Obviously, they are just being made for profit.

Did we really need a Sonic the Hedgehog Movie? No. Did we need a Mario Bros movie? No. Did we need a Minecraft movie? No. Technically, no movie is really necessary, but these films again just clearly for profit cause they know the fans will come running. Now this isn’t a dig at anyone. If that’s what you like then great! No problem in engaging with material that you enjoy, but it’s just another example of big companies playing it safe to me. Like all those live action films, they just want the security in knowing this film will do good money wise.

No originality at all just iconic, well known characters where their presence alone has to carry the film instead of the plot. In walking the halls of my theater, I saw a movie poster for the new film Until Dawn. If you don’t know it’s a horror video game incorporating the butterfly effect where a a couple of teenagers have to face a monster in the woods. I saw that poster and rolled my eyes so far back I got dizzy. I genuinely got annoyed by it. I’d image a Roblox movie is in the makings as see speak as well. 🙄

I went to go see the third Sonic movie solely for Jim Carrey and Jim Carrey only. I was genuinely sad to see his character(s) die. He was SO funny in that film! I actually loved him so much in that film! And that dancing scene between the two of them! 🤣🤣🤣 Their jokes were so funny! I had seen the first movie, not the second, but the first, he was so funny that I was willing to see the third in theaters. Genuinely thought that film was so good solely because of Jim Carrey! 🤣

You should see the second one as well, he's just as good in it :)

Re: Mario, FNAF - I'm somewhat optimistic for these two films (if you've seen them, how were they?) knowing they will not be as hard to sit through as the FUCKING ROMANCE SUBPLOT FROM THE MINECRAFT MOVIE. Knowing some c*** came up with the idea for her and the cock-gargling villager she dates makes me depressed. The only merit I'll give it is that it gave me a chance to rest my eyes because I had a mild headache at the time, and I really didn't have the tenacity to keep my eyes open the entire time.

P.S. Not a single bit of popcorn was thrown during the chicken jockey scene. There was barely a peep, actually. Another win for UK cinemas, people in this country don't go to cinemas just to scream and shout like startled apes.

@Frameshift07 Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out. I’ve seen the Mario movie but not the FNAF movie. The Mario movie I did kind of like. The animation was really cute! ☺️

When I went to see the Minecraft movie, people did clap and yell when the chicken jockey showed up. No popcorn was thrown surprisingly enough. 😅 There were signs on the doors of the theaters saying to “NOT throw popcorn as REAL PEOPLE have to clean it up.” So maybe not my theater but definitely theaters before me unfortunately. 😓

Same thing happened to me. I think a passed out a bit during the movie. I really wasn’t interested in seeing it and did not want to be there. I had a chance to rest my eyes a bit. That is also the only credit I’ll give it. 😂

I love action 'leave your brain at the door' movies. And 'so bad they're good' horror movies. They are my guilty pleasures.

Volcano, Dante's Peak, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Sharknado, The Wicker Man ('the bees' version), Troll 2, etc.

I do enjoy all horror though - especially cerebral horror and atmospheric horror.

Anyone else watched the movie Ida (2013)? How did you like it?
It absolutely captivated me and made me realize I loved the more '''artsy''' films with simple plots. I also adored the ending as it was kinda the one that I was cheering to happen.

I found it quite boring actually... 😐  I'm not opposed to artsy and simple, just not too artsy and simple. Ida felt too empty for me, unfortunately. A bit like Persona (1966), which I never even bothered to finish (but you might enjoy it if you liked Ida!)

Also I maybe forgot the ending - did she end up sleeping with some guy and falling in love?

Last night I saw Looper (2012 sci-fi/action), and felt like it was so much better than it had to be. It could have just been Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt chasing each other around on hoverbikes and audiences would have been satisfied, but instead it has great writing, very specific worldbuilding, and a bunch of interesting stuff about cycles of violence.

Has anyone else seen a movie lately that exceeded their expectations? An action film that had unexpected emotional resonance? A kids' film that you could easily enjoy as an adult? Something that was way more fun or way less predictable than you expected?

Ahh, I see. Maybe I resonated with it because I found some relatable moments and was probably filling in the ''blanks'' emotionally myself.

And the ending is where she does sleep with some guy and later he asks her to stay with him, and she asks in return ''what then?'', and then he talks about settling down with her, and she again asks ''what then?''. I really loved that dialogue and found it relatable and profound. In the end she doesn't stay with him and I believe goes back to the monastery. In the end there's a long shot where she's just walking towards the camera as it steps back, and honestly, I thought it was brilliant. I loved that it didn't end how one might typically expect, with her just settling down with him, and I love that after he told her all those plans for a life with her, she just asked ''what then?''.
