I like both..... I don't know if I have a preference.... sometimes I struggle to think of a good gift to get someone, but when I get a good idea.... man that shit sticks with me and I savor it; it makes me just as happy to give a good gift as to getting one. :'D

There ahould be a third oprion: "Neither"

Getting gifts, especially if you dont know someone too well, is such a hassle. Thats why gift cards became so popular back in the day; at least until everyone got sick and tired of them

As for recieving, same issue in reverse, with the added factor that you have to fake it so as to not hurt the other persons feelings

I do like giving more than receiving. Though I would prefer to have some kind of balance. It makes me uncomfortable to be constantly receiving and I’m not contributing anything back. And if I’m the one constantly giving, I feel like I’m being taken for granted and I should invest as much as they are investing.

I can understand how that can set unfair expectations and unwritten agreements. I’m not expecting a constant 50/50, it’s not about numbers. Even something small, I always appreciate. Just words can be enough for me. It’s the thought that counts.

Receiving, duh.  That's the only one of the two scenarios in which I get stuff.

Seriously though, I hate trying to give gifts because I rarely know what people want.  People express that same problem with me a lot too.  Even when I ask them (which is apparently socially inappropriate to do, for some reason), I don't always get a straight or realistic answer.  And that's fair, because I rarely would have an answer for them either.  (Despite my initial comment, I'm not really a very "wanty" person, to the frustration of several people trying to gift-shop for me.)

I don't know why we don't all just send money.  With enough tens and twenties, I can just go get something I already know I'll want.  And if I don't yet know what I'll want, I can always keep it around until I do know.

I feel like I dislike both on some level lol.

It is nice when you stumble across something just perfect for someone, but forced gift giving holidays stress me out. It is not something that comes very naturally to me.

And on occasion being given gifts that just really speak to someone knowing you well and their thoughtfulness are really touching, but often I just feel kind of awkward receiving gifts. But I put that I like receiving gifts more.

I like and dislike things about both.

Giving makes me super happy when I find something meaningful and unique for someone I really care about. It's just nice to do something that makes someone feel good and that isn't just any old thing but rather something that makes them feel known. I deeply dislike the pressure to get presents for people on certain occasions, though. Much as I'd love to always have something ready for a birthday or Christmas or whatever, often I just haven't found anything when those dates roll around and then I feel bad. I'd rather just give stuff whenever I actually come across something that really feels right. Giving is also stressful because I rarely have any extra money to get anything for anyone whatsoever.

Receiving makes me happy when it's something really personally meaningful or that I've truly wanted a lot. I mean... it's nice to have stuff, duh. 😂 It can also make me feel kind of guilty and ashamed though since, as I say, I can rarely reciprocate. Even if I know the other person isn't expecting me to, I'd rather I could. I already feel like enough of a financial burden when it comes to everyday life, so I feel like maybe nobody should give me 'extras'.

I prefer giving gifts

I guess my thing about receiving gifts is that my family don't put effort or thought and tell me to just to get what I want, which just feels like I am getting them myself

I'm not really a fan of either. It feels like there's a lot of unspoken social rules about both, and I'm always worried about screwing something up.

I do like the Sinterklaas game, which is where everyone buys a couple of gifts, they go in a pile, and then you play a dice game to win some.

Generally neither. If it was a random, one-off sort of thing that wasn't somewhat an expectation, and it was simply because "Oh, I saw this and thought of you", that is okay..

Depends on the circumstances and depends on the gift.

I know someone who hates the gift giving ritual of birthdays and Christmas because it becomes about reciprocity and duty. He much prefers spontaneous giving at random points of the year because it makes for a better surprise and doesn’t have the same baggage attached. I think he has a point.

i dont like receiving gifts. if ppl actually gifted me money instead of some random crap, i'd use these to get something cool for myself.

and giving gifts is my love language, so if i like someone, i often get them something like their fave sweets, and something special (and often expensive) for their birthday.

Giving. Receiving for whatever reason ways makes me feel awkward? I can't even explain why it does. I never really had much growing up and during Christmas time my mother would take what we could around to the children's hospital or the homeless shelters. Giving has always felt natural.

Like if you walked past the lego store, and daveb was in town?

Or you walked by the train store and j. Van deijck was in town?

Or you walked by the banana milk store, and someone who liked banana milk was in town?

It depends. I love receiving really thoughtful gifts and things I know I’ll get a lot of use out of.

I also really like giving gifts, especially when I have a good idea of what someone wants.
This year, my grandma mentioned that she couldn’t get a dollar tree calendar last year and that it’s been bothering her all year. The dollar tree in the city closest to us has calendars, so I was able to find one for her. Getting that gift for her felt really good

I always feel awkward receiving gifts. I don't have very big reactions naturally, so I have to fake being super happy and thankful so I don't look ungrateful. It's tiring.

On the other hand I love giving gifts. Making others happy makes my life feel meaningful. 😌

Can you imagine that my mom even told me not to buy gifts? I would feel awkward giving nothing, so I bought an elegant tea box for her and her husband. And also, I admit, something akin to "transitional gift"* - I had bought myself sport knee socks which turned out not to reach the knee at all. OK, one pair was tried on, but I took the other two pairs and they will be a gift for her - I hope that they will be useful as skiing socks. They don't have to necessarily reach the knee, it's just that I wear this kind of socks as a bit of compression due to my varicose veins.

I still feel awakward knowing that the gifts for me - bought by myself with my mom's money - are worth much more than that tea and socks...

*A transitional gift in the strict sense is a gift you didn't like, so some time later you give it away to someone else...

I like it to be mutual. It's good to give, but when the other party doesn't give anything back, then what and who are you spending money for?

  • 1 year later...

This poll is being locked and moved to the read only Census archive for it's respective year. As part of ongoing Census organisation, and in an attempt to keep the demographics of the polls current with the active user base at the time, the polls will last for one year from now on. However, members are allowed and even encouraged to restart new polls similar to the archived ones if they like them.
