Does anybody have any f/f media recommendations?

Books, movies, TV shows, anything. I've realized I have read/watched very few f/f romances. Obviously bonus points if one or both are asexual, heck bonus points if anyone can recommend any polyamorous romances.

I've read a good portion of f/f romance, so I'll pull up my favorites.

 

1. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston (very popular but definitely worth the hype imo)

 

2. Outdrawn by Deanna Gray (this is a lesser-known novel but features two Black main characters and is honestly just perfection)

 

3. Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake (first book in a trilogy!)

 

4. Astrid Parker Doesn't Fail by Ashley Herring Blake (second book and my favorite so far)

I loved 'Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko' 'Ayaka-Chan wa Hiroko-Senpai ni Koishiteru'. It's a Japanese show in which a girl desperately tries to get her coworker to understand that she likes her in a gay way, but coworker is like 'Naaahhh I'm sure she's straight, oblivious and just trying to be friendly, I should keep a level head about this, oh no why is she so cute help'.

 

I also loved the shit out of the Filipino miniseries Marahuyo Project, which features the L,G,B,T and I, but not the A. Femme gay guy with an activist streak arrives on a conservative island and shakes things up along with a merry band of fellow queer folks, who all have their own romantic subplots.

 

And this f/f Korean miniseries, 'Our Love Ended Before It Began' is adorable.

 

'Koisenu Futari' isn't gay, but it is the best ace rep I have ever seen anywhere, and I strongly recommend it: https://v2.dramacool.ba/drama-detail/koisenu-futari-2022

 

'The Owl House' is an animated show that is one of my favorite pieces of queer media. There's lots of magic and silliness but underneath all of that is a statement about fighting for nonconformity.

 

There's also the 'Reverse 4 You' (Thailand, 2024) in which a lesbian with the power to reverse time has to choose between being with her soulmate and keeping her sister alive.

 

And 'The Secret of Us' (Thailand, 2024), in which a doctor's superstar ex-gf wants her back, blabla parents forced them apart, lots of flirting and jealousy and angst.

If so, I recommend 'Our Flag Means Death' (US, 2022) about a prissy rich man who wants to go on an adventure and hires a crew of pirates. The ship becomes a sort of queer safe haven. It's an exploration of toxic and non-toxic masculinities.

 

'The Way He Looks' (Brazil, 2014), about a blind high school boy who is worried he'll never be accepted or have romantic love, and his bestie who would beg to differ.

 

'The Eclipse' (Thailand, 2022), in which a high school serves as an allegory for society and queerphobia. A school prefect (cop) with lots of internalized homophobia can't help but fall for the rebel trying to topple the system.

 

'I Feel You Linger in the Air' (Thailand, 2023), in which a guy accidentally time-travels to 1940's Thailand and falls both into a complex web of power and lies, and in love with a prince-like dude. There's also a lesbian couple but they're not the focus.

 

'Triage' (Thailand, 2022), in which an ER doctor gets stuck in a timeloop that resets every time this one guy (eventual love interest) dies, and he has a whole hospital conspiracy to figure out before he can save everyone. Best use of a time loop I've ever seen.

 

And also the book 'Peter Darling' by Austin Chant, which is a twisted re-telling of Peter Pan.

 

 

And I can't not mention the film 'Nimona' (US, 2023). It's not primarily a romance, but it is very queer and silly and it's main purpose is flipping the narrative of monstrosity upside down, and I love it to bits.

I haven’t consumed that much f/f media, but one of the works I’ve enjoyed the most is Bloom into you (Yagate kimi ni naru) an anime and manga that, even though it never explicitly uses the terms “asexual” or “aromantic”, it explores these through its main character, Yuu Koito, and her relationship with the other main girl, Touko Nanami, as Yuu thinks she doesn’t understand love or isn’t capable of reciprocating romantic feelings. [In the hidden content there are Spoilers, be aware]

One of the best moments of the series for me is when Yuu talks about love and relationships with Seiji Maki, a character who’s very heavily implied to be aroace. He doesn’t want a relationship for himself, but enjoys seeing others being happy with it and helping them to grow and overcome their relationship issues. He concludes that Yuu is similar to him, but not fully like him. So Yuu actually experiences some form of attraction to Touko.

 

Where does Yuu fit in the sexuality/romantic spectrum is up to the spectator to determine, but honestly, as a straight asexual dude, she’s one of the characters I’ve resonated with the most. Also I’ll give it bonus points for the lack of so-called “fan service” and actual development of characters and story, without making the story unnecessarily long. These are complaints I have with other manga and anime which are not present here.

What I meant about the m/m ones is that when I read/watch queer stories it's mostly about queer men. While those stories are great I want to read/watch more stories about queer women. I don't know how I made such a typo.

My go to recc for this is "Perfect Rhythm" by Jae ... which is both f/f and has one person in the main pairing be ace. There is also an aro side character in a QPR with an allo person. It does have a sex scene in the story but the relevant chapter begins with a warning that the scene is in that chapter (and the scene isn't a "And now the ace person is cured" scene - the ace person remains pointedly ace for the whole book). The author herself isn't ace but she wrote the book because she had so many ace readers tell her they wished they could be represented that she decided to do some research and give them a story, which I think is quite sweet.

 

For f/f more generally, I generally like most of Jae's stuff (my fave by her is actually "Under a Falling Star" but if you want one with no sex scenes at all, "Shaken to the Core" has no sex and is historical fiction about the SanFran earthquake. I think "Something in the Wine" doesn't either but I could be misremembering). Hayley Cass also has some good books - I particularly like "Those Who Wait" and "On the Same Page but they do both have explicit sex scenes. The latter, interestingly and surprisingly, has some discussion over whether one of the main characters is aro and has one person in the main pair believe for much of the story that the other is not ace but is either aro or is functionally aro and treats that as a very valid thing.
