Yep, got that as well by now.

Yeah, bad joke.

See, I knew all the words just fine but it took me asking someone else and talking it out to be certain what the meaning was. So you're doing fine for someone whose first language isn't English.

Thank you. I try my best, mostly get along just fine in English. And then occasionally I completely miss a word and feel like I just dropped right through thin ice.

The other f word that has been discussed quite extensively earlier today is also one that I just never happened upon. And so it has no connotation whatsoever for me. Apparently quite different for a significant part of the world population.

Oh, and no worries @Windmills of My Mind, it’s super hard to offend me.

The fastest way to T me off is for someone to play dumb yet think they’re being smart or coy. 🙄

You did neither of those and it became funny across the posts. Ceebs the Canuck had to ask Tele the Pom to translate what Traveler the Yankee was sayin’. That’s funny! 🤣

Whoa whoa whoa what?! Is that an American term for a British person?! I've never heard it.

'Fanny' I think? Convo was over in the TMI confessions thread. It means... ladyparts... in the UK.

I recall telling this story before, but it was way back in the day when I was living in Japan. I was in a bar with an Aussie, a Kiwi, a Pom, and a Canuck…..yeah, it’s one of those stories!

The Aussie started talking about their Dickie. I was suitably shocked and had no idea what they were on about. The Pom said, “Aw, come on, you know, their banana hammock!” Me 😳, haha. (Still no idea) The Canuck said, “Ya know, Trunks, eh! For swimming?”

Me…. 💡 (We call it a swim SUIT here 🙃)

Lots of English-to-English translation that night. Don’t get me started on “pissed”. 😬🤣

'Fanny' = Aussie term for the Brits?

Spoiler

Don't take me seriously here. I can be more than a bit dense, but by now I got that it refers to lady parts

PLOT TWIST: So as my ex -- an American -- is living with me again for a bit here, I just asked him if he knew the term 'trunks' before moving to Canada. He said yes but that he wouldn't have used it personally, but he knew what it meant and his mum used the word. Maybe it's an east coast thing? Have you always lived in California? His family is all from the New York State/New Jersey area and he mostly grew up in Massachusetts (with a short stint in New Mexico when he was really little).

Yeah that's what my ex just said he'd call them and I think that's pretty interchangeable with 'swimming trunks' in my head, for male swimwear.

Female swimwear I would call a bathing suit.

Oh god that reminds me that when I was in the UK I learnt they say 'swimming costume', which sounds hilariously formal to me.

Further update: I just found a forum discussion about it and someone said 'in BrE we just say trunks (for men)'. Do Brits say 'trunks' like us, then? Tele's gone to sleep, I can't ask him. 😂

Well geezz, you can not wake up your partner for stuff like this? I mean, this is important.

😂 I'm tempted but he's been sick with a case of head goo (a nasty ear infection) for a few days (finally got some antibiotics this morning) so I'll let him rest haha.

Well OK, fine for now then. But don't let it become a habit.

Don't worry, I'm consistently doing my spousal duty of being as lovingly annoying as possible. 😁

Re-reading some of the above, just making sure if I did not accidentally miss something among the derailing.

Or, alternatively, anything else that can be taken out of context.

You never told us that your ex is a nudist.

That's entirely fair. 😁

It's not like I've escaped retaliation. The puns, oh my god. For someone who isn't a father, Tele has enough dad jokes he thinks are witty to mortify a whole classroom of children. And I get to hear them. And he's ruined me because now I make them too.

I mean... his parents met on what was basically a hippie commune (an 'experimental town') in the southwest United States, despite both being East Coasters. So you never know what could happen.

So very happy he remains clothed around me, at least. That ship sailed a very long time ago...

In the USA, "trunks" is used to disambiguate what kind of swim suit we're talking about.

"Banana hammock" (or brief-cut, or male bikini, or "German/Quebecois/Mediterranean beachwear," or "Olympic-style") is the other type.

But 99% of the time there's no need to disambiguate 'cause most American het-men wouldn't ever wear the other kind.

Beyond that, "trunks" is a marketing term. Ads, catalogs and retail displays can't just call it a "suit" for some reason.

I'm with the American het men on that, like if I was a dude. I'd never wear something that tight. As a woman, I don't even like swimsuits meant for women. 😅 Never worn a bikini in my life and haven't worn a one-piece since my early 20s. I mean I also don't go swimming regularly, so there's that. Last time was in a lake with my ex-girlfriend in 2019 and we were in T-shirts and underpants (semi-public area so wearing nothing would've been a very bad idea). After that I decided I wanted to do more lake swimming and bought a pair of bike shorts and top meant for working out in... but I haven't been since. 🥲

You can tell I'm not American then, as I do tick the box for het-man. When possible I much prefer to swim in the nude. I'm all for traveling light and at times I combine running with swimming halfway. Aka "run-dip-run". When this is at a place where nudity is disapproved of, the alternative is to carry the least possible weight while running. That would be Olympic style. For practical reasons I find it is the next best thing to nothing at all.

This is what you read when you've been around Ceebs for too long.

I know you did not write it like that - blame the filthy part of my mind, which filled it in like so.

No, as I’ve a bit of wanderlust. I’ve lived in 4 countries across the years.  I also took a year to travel around Asia, including India before getting serious about life. Eventually, I returned to Cali for reasons I’m still unsure of. Family? Um, 😬

My lack of language skill displays my ignorance I suppose. Bathing suit though, is a yes. I also use that for a one piece for women.
