marieatsplants Posted November 6, 2023 Share Posted November 6, 2023 I grew up in a more rural, car-dependent area where I developed a lot of nostalgia for cars. I wish I could own a car, but it's too expensive/unnecessary for where I live now... not to mention using public transportation where possible is the more conscientious option, especially because car rentals/sharing is pretty prolific where I am. I maintain my opinion that, as a potential very bad driver, I'm making a responsible decision by not being a driver at all, and I want people who make such decision to be praised for their responsibility and not condemned as suckers because supposedly every adult should drive. But still, I have a vehicle. Muscle-powered. My bicycle. I wish I could live somewhere where I could walk to a bus stop or use a bike lane. I loved living at college because I could just walk to my classes or the library or the store. If I lived somewhere with better bike paths and better public transit, I don't know if I ever would've pushed myself so hard to learn how to drive and eventually buy a car. I had a car that I owned outright until the last 6 months because my car needs had become more than the car was suitable for. oldgeeza Posted November 12, 2023 Share Posted November 12, 2023 I have a car and a motorbike, my daily commute is around 30 miles each way, I work shifts and the public transport in general is pretty poor and expensive, you would think that working in a large industrial area there would be a transport service to and from the area, I've never seen a bus apart from ones that companies supply and I haven't got a clue where the nearest train station is, I've owned my car since 2011 and my motorbike since 2005, I also drive for a living Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maybe if they ever come out with self-driving cars and let us own them (which part of me doubts) then I possibly could. I do not like cars very much for a variety of reasons (personal, environmental, costs). I can’t deny that cars make it easy to get around, especially in cold months, and carry lots of stuff. I have just learned driving, getting my license in a couple months and then I plan to get one by the end of this year. Never thought I would say this before starting 2024, but well, here I am now. I live in the suburbs with no public transportation and very few sidewalks. One decent taxi company, a couple gypsy cabs and their equivalent Lyft. Lyft has frequent cancellations if they get a more expensive trip, is 3 times as expensive as the taxi, and will not schedule in advance so you know you can get to an appointment on time. We do have a volunteer senior van that will take you to medical appointments for free, but they are booked up if you don't reserve them at least a month in advance, so I only use them when I need to go to specialists at a distance and with little to no parking nearby when I get there. Penalty for living in an area with grass, trees, birds, small animals (squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks), cleaner air, and lower crime. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
