ei-hvað Posted May 31, 2023 Share Posted May 31, 2023 If you are interested in Icelandic TV, I can recommend the 2007 one season TV series "Næturvaktin" (the Night Shift). It's a huge cultural institution in Iceland, and probably the best media to watch if you want to understand authentic Icelandic culture in the mid 2000's/early 2010's. It's a dark comedy about three employees working the night shift of a gas station in a Reykjavík suburb. One of them is a guy in his early 20's who's rich parents are trying to push into studying medicine, but he's trying to figure himself out. Another is a guy in his mid 30's who's kind of an aloof idiot who's kind-hearted but also wants people to like him (he's very much of an Icelandic stereotype). The third is their megalomaniac boss, a communist who views himself as incredibly smart because he has five degrees and constantly bullies his employees because his life is otherwise complete shit. He was played by our most beloved comedy actor, Jón Gnarr, who became president of Reykjavík in 2010 and was one of Zelenskiy's main inspirations. It had two sequel series which both lasted for one season (and got even darker). Dagvaktin (the Day Shift) in 2008, and Fangavaktin (the title is a spoiler) in 2009. A movie prequel was made in 2010 which completely smashed audience records for movies in Iceland (including Titanic and Avatar) but is virtually unknown outside of the country (even compared to other Icelandic "foreign films"). 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

iff Posted June 1, 2023 Share Posted June 1, 2023 (edited) On TV series. I particularly liked recently: I really enjoyed the German drama "faking hitler" about the forged hitler diaries. Currently watching "kleo" on netflix. I quite like it. I recently watched "Munich games" which was very good, until the last half hour. Hopefully there will be a second season to set things right. Bad Banks, a German financial drama was also terrific. Lying life of adults was very good too, as an adaptation of an elegant ferrante novel. The Swedish series Witch Hunt was terrific, not only because the heroine was an accountant. It deals with anti money laundering and such Edit - I forgot the terrific Los Espookys, so funny about a person who with his interest in horror and gore, decides to set up a business with his 3 friends to specialise in creating scares. Ronaldo, (the horror fan) there is some debate on whether he could be ace which I wish could have been delved into more. A woman returns home after her father had a heartattack to help him recover. While there, she gets back into the local rowing team. I really liked it. Warning: some strong language. One film that I found surprisingly easy to understand was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan's_Labyrinth (old news, I know ). This was good news because normally natural spoken Spanish was unbearably fast for me and impossible to follow. I tried doing the same with subtitles. It was then that I discovered that subtitles are indepenent from the original audio and even short subtitle equivalent can use a different expression. The Magnificent Century (Muhteşem Yüzyıl) is the historical TV series about the reign of sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, and it's in Turkish language. a little annihilation Posted March 11, 2024 Share Posted March 11, 2024 i tried watching blue is the warmest colour which is in french, but my god it was so long and boring and painfully slow. it was filmed as if everything was happening in real time to some random normal people and i couldn't even get halfway through. i started watching call me by your name which if i recall is in italian or something? and then i noped out when i realized that the romance was between an adult and a minor.
