Can a movie director be asexual?

Recommended Posts

I think yes because as for music and other arts, there are so many different genres of movies, but I don't know because there are a lot of movies that contains sex, love, kiss scenes.

What do you think about it? Can a director be asexual and a romantic, not interested in love and sex?

Also for other art like music? I know that in reality there are a lot of artists that are asexual, and also artists are more present as asexual than other professions like scientists, athletes etc so what do you think about it?

@Marko9999 Hi

I think the question might have to be asked differently, because obviously any type of person could be asexual, so maybe more along ..

What would make someone asexual not want to be a director?  Is it hard to become a successful director if someone is asexual?

Hey! I am a film student in my final semester of school and I think definitely. I think directing is a very broad job and involves a lot. You can also co-direct and in scenes where there would be sex or kissing there is also often an intimacy coordinator on set to help actors feel comfortable. For some aces/aros maybe it would be more difficult to direct these scenes but overall though anyone can direct something even if they haven't experienced it. And there are many many movies and films that don't involve sex or romantic subplots at all.

This is like asking if a bus driver can be asexual. Your sexuality doesn't determine your job.

There are plenty of movies that don't contain sex etc. and even if they did an asexual person is perfectly capable of directing those scenes otherwise they, presumably, wouldn't be in the profession.  Also, filming a sex scene for a movie is notoriously the least sexiest thing anyone will ever do. Most (decent) directors are perfectly objective and are too busy thinking about lighting/framing, so their interest or lackthereof in sex won't even come into it.

Of course they can. You don't need to experience something to direct it in a movie, or there won't be directors at all.

Yes, I can understand and if you are a film student you are the proof that an asexual can be a director. I also think that it's the same fora director who wants to speak about a disease that he never had but maybe he documents about it and take other people knowledge something like speaking about psychopatic people. So, it can be the same for a director who never experienced sex. There are asexual filmmakers: https://asexualartists.wordpress.com/asexual-filmmakers/

I can say with certainty I have no idea what the sexual orientation is of any given Hollywood director.

Now, would it be hard to become a successful director while forgoing sex and/or romance in movies? Yes, because those two things tend to sell tickets and home movie purchases. But it's not an absolute... a really well-done movie with a solid plot can sell without sex or romance, and too often they're added to mediocre or bad movies to make them sellable.

You act like directing a movie means you need to be in love with the actors or something. Which is nonesense.

Also Ace does not equal sex repulsed. Some asexuals can just be indifferent to it.

Artists also draw nude models, it does not mean they trying to bang the models. It means they trying to figure out how to accurately portray the human body.

The fact you believe Nudity and Sex in Art is the same as enjoying those things for sexual pleasure is the same thing and thats absolute nonesense.

I also would go as far to say one can be good at Sex and intimate activities without being into them. For example I am asexual and had many partners who wanted to do activities. I am able to tease and excite them but I mostly going off cognitive empathy. Like I not there with them but I can figure out what they find fun. I could also see an asexual who is not repulsed possibly being decent as say a stripper or porn star. So yeah your idea of sexuality determining occupation is just so off base.

I would have thought that would certainly be possible; however, @awadama says it's not allowed, so I guess not.  👎

If the goal is to become a movie director, it seems reasonable to act like a person who fits the demands of the film industry and not to be open about being asexual. However, I think many directors are motivated to make movies by a particular perspective that they want to express or emphasize. The difficulty comes when it is the perspective of asexuality.

“Can porn film directors be asexuals” yeah

”can porn stars be asexuals” yes

I think there’s no barriers to any profession based on sexuality.  Many, many years ago, it was, plenty would discriminate and many would remain jobless who would be Homosexual and/or Transsexual, the 80s for example where harsh times even if you just ‘looked remotely gay or trans’ during the AIDS crisis.

Anyhow I’m AroAce and make specific Mobian fetish fictosexual written journals and virtual photography for the last 2 years. There’s a few that has questioned the sexuality and gender and age of the characters and writer however.  That’s also coming from other Asexuals… in the same sexual kink communities.

I would like to go to university to study cinema in September.

I've always wanted to work in this environment despite the fact that I'm generally disgusted by sex (there are things that leave me indifferent).

Being a director is part of my projects (the profession of screenwriter and actress also interests me).

I live in France, so the way French cinema works is different from American cinema, but romance (which I don't particularly mind) and sex are also present (where I find certain scenes are unnecessary in certain films).

I'm still young, so I could probably change my mind about my career choice. But if I go into directing, I don't think I'll talk about sex in my films, unless I'm making one about asexuality.

In this case, I will have to be really comfortable shooting scenes where there will probably be sex (but I have time).

Afterwards, will my films be successful ? I don't know, I'm not looking for fame either. But I know that a good film is not because of sex scenes, a film can be bad whether there is sex or not, like a film can be good with sex or not.

For some reason, it reminds me of this Cinema Therapy video, the one that ranks couples in Love Therapy. At some point in it, Alan explains (at 25:50 if you want to hear him) that sexual things are the worst and the least sexy thing you can imagine. So I don't think that allo/sexual people are more comcortable than asexuals filming these.

I also think that having this in a professional context change everything. It will be about directing actors sure, but also about the light, the camera, etc, and I think it helps to detach from the sexual aspect.

Well, I thought the argument was that the asexual director wouldn't be able to get the light, camera, etc right because they didn't have the experience they were trying to capture in film.

Though, OP didn't say that, so maybe I'm just projecting.

Maybe.

But I don't think it really matters anyway cause except if the sex scene has no purpose, there are other things that the director tries to capture within the sex scene : the intimacy, or the fun, etc. And I think that it drives the direction more than the act in itself.

And anyway I don't believe that you need to experience something to "capture" it. Not to brag, but when I was a teen and did theater, we did an exercice where we all said a romantic text to each other, and I can say from their reactions that I did the best performance. I am still completely aro; but I noticed how people talk when they are in love and I just reproduced the tone. I didn't need to feel it to fake it.

Absolutely. Usually, the director is trying to help tell a story. The story is a product for an audience, and it can be told regardless of the director's orientation.

Absolutely not. No, movie directors can never, ever be asexual. We all know the ONLY relevant qualification for movie directors is to be super horny. The hornier, the better. On the application form, you have to list every person you ever had sex with. They call it "body count". If the number is lower than 10, your chances are already low, but you still have a chance. If the number is 0, it's definitely game over. They will also connect you to a strange device, the Sex-o-Meter (patent pending), to measure your arousal. This is standard industry procedure. Obviously. Because the only kind of movie that exists is pr0n. Other genres aren't real, they are figments of your imagination. Every movie is pr0n, even those that don't seem like it. You all think being a movie director is about movies. Fat chance! In reality, the entiry movie industry is just a giant allosexual sex orgy ring disguising as a business. It's called HollyWOOD for a reason. The conspiracy goes deeper than we all like to admit.

I ever thought that the majority of the asexual people are scientists because they work with immaterial things and are very focused on their works, but in reality the most famous scientists who were asexual were Nikola Tesla and Isaac Newton.

I also thought that because artists speak more about sex and love with music, movies, books etc they couldn't be asexual but when I search for asexual artists, as I've done for rock musicians and filmmakers, there comes so many of them, so I think it is different.

I also remember about Einstein who has different lovers.

So, maybe is more common in artists because of their particularly to have difficulties in socialization maybe, and because art is a way to express emotions

Maybe not everything is connected by thin straight lines based on hand-picked stereotypes from individual bubbles of culturally relative perceptions, and therefore asexual people can love art while some scientists love to fuck, without there being conflicting facts.
