This is sort of related to my 'vote aven' thread, although it's a little more constuctive, so it deserves its own thread:

okay, so there's a website called Acronym finder:

...and we're not listed. So I submitted it yesterday. This wesbite is connected to dictionary.com, so it might be useful to somebody someday.

If anyone had a problem getting this site an Axisymmetric Vectoring Exhaust Nozzles mixed up, you now know who to thank.

Then there's the Paris underground, whose acronym is RATP...

When the Reform Party of Canada first tried to merge with the Progressive Conservative Party, they initially announced the merged party would be known as the Conservative-Reform Alliance Party... The Canadian press had a field day with that one, and the party quickly changed its name to the Canadian Alliance...

Under US President Carter, it was reported in the media that the newly independent 'education ministry' was to be called the Department Of Public Education.

Sadly, it turned out only to be unofficial government grumbling that had leaked, but it was a fun one or two days... and under Carter, it was eminently believable that someone really would have tried to name a department that.

The word 'laser' is an acronym that stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". There's a slight technical error there: lasers actually involve "Light Oscillation", not "Light Amplification" - but the latter makes a more preferable acronym.
