Starting another topic like this since the last one was in 2010 and has been archived. Which one are you? Also the landscape on Marvel vs. DC has changed big time over time. A Marvel or DC fan? Or both?

I'm a Marvel and DC fan, I love movies from both sides, with a preference for Marvel movies and DC shows, DC shows because they tend to run longer, and it isn't like I don't like Marvel TV shows, I just don't like that they are usually over in like 12 or 13 episodes then you have to wait for the new season. Although I do like that Marvel does put out way more movies.  ^_^

As for comics, I don't read comics.... so yeah.

DC are kinda weaker on the movie front as of nowadays.

Although as far as gaming  goes, I have to say I loved Injustice 2 (1 as well but 2 is more modern).

Marvel's Avengers the game for me was also excellent, I played it to the nth degree, although the only hero I really enjoyed playing was Thor, I did enjoy Iron Man too but after playing an overpowered hero like Thor, I couldn't stick with it playing Iron Man, I should have done it the other way around, Thor sort of just spoils you. 🤣

That's good to know! I never played any of the games, a little unsure what they'd be like.

I remember hearing about Arkham Knight a couple times and it seemed to have mixed reviews (though I heard the soundtrack was good).

Arkham Knight is awesome if you're into those kinds of games, I'm not so I haven't played any of the Batman games.

I'm certainly looking forward to playing both Spiderman and Spiderman Miles Morales once the PS Plus Extra launches at the beginning of June (as that's the tier I will be going for) on my PS5, I played the older Spiderman game and finished it back in the day on PC and really enjoyed it. I know that just the way Spiderman moves allows for a wonderful game to be made centered around him, and also I've heard great things both from players and critics alike, it will be really cool having something like Game Pass for my PS5 (I do have Game Pass Ultimate for my PC and Xbox Series X).

Those do sound like they would make fantastic games!

I haven't that much experience with either, a bit though

With marvel, I watched Wandavision, moon Knight, and eternals, I really enjoyed both moon Knight and Wandavision, eternals was OK but I feel it dragged a bit. I've never seen any avengers movie though i might watch the brie larson one because she's brilliant

Dc wise, again I do not think I've seen a whole lot. I did watch peacemaker series and enjoyed it (despite every episode going downhill after the opening credits. The big all ages all races dance number was brilliant in the credits). I also have seen the harlry quinn animated show. I really enjoy that, really like poison ivy in it.

Movie wise, I did see the Chris nolan/ Christian bale batman movies. I also liked the harley quinn movie and that second suicide squad (haven't seen the first. Yes, I am not a completist) joaquin phoenix's Joker is brilliant. It is unhinged, deeply unsettling cinema, a truly great psychological thriller.

I went with dc in the poll

I didn't like Wandavision, but I really really enjoyed Moon Knight. It is among my top Marvel shows ever. As for the movie Eternals, I enjoyed it since I like the action a lot, however, it did feel like it was.... missing something, something magical that the other Marvel movies based off of the comics have. I'm certainly looking forward to the She Hulk show coming in September. Btw I am supposed to be going to the cinema to watch the latest Dr. Strange movie so I hope that will be good. One of my friends who saw it said he didn't enjoy it, otherwise I've heard good things.

I haven't seen Peacemaker and Harley Quinn, and I haven't seen the Suicide Squad movies even though I intend to, might watch them this evening. The Batman movies have all been excellent, although I haven't seen the latest one. And I've never really liked The Joker as a character so I can't say any one who has played him has been someone who's performance I admired.

And to clarify, you can vote for both DC and Marvel, which I did, in the poll, since I like both. :)

I enjoyed Captain Marvel (I didn't totally understand some of the criticisms it got).

The second Suicide Squad was, in my opinion, better than the first one so I think it's a-okay that you didn't see it yet. I forgot all about Birds of Prey! That was one of the better DC movies in recent years.

My favorite DC movie of all time still has to be Green Lantern, although I do have a special place in my heart for the Wonder Woman movies.

Captain Marvel is supposed to be more powerful than Thor now, which is why people were unhappy I think. I thought the latest Captain Marvel movies were great personally though, I really don't mind a woman being more powerful, physically than a man. I mean it doesn't bother me and I don't understand why so many men feel threatened by that. Maybe it's because I have a thing for tom boys? 🤷‍♂️

I love superhero stuff. Overall I have always leaned more towards DC characters, in that I prefer Superman and Batman, but film wise I am much preferring the Marvel films. "The Batman" was utter rot, a waste of 3(?) hours. I love Spider-Man these days, and have enjoyed all of the Marvel films I have seen, though there are many I have not (I haven't seen any of the Captain America films for example).

I don't read comics, not do I play any video games related to superheroes (I only play 4X/Grand Strategy games).

The Wonder Woman movies were fantastic! Though, my favorite movie is probably the Teen Titans one...mostly for nostalgia. I've never seen Green Lantern but I've heard Ryan Reynolds roast himself for it.

Yeah, I don't really get it either. I honestly love that she is more powerful, mostly because so many movies try to make women weak (not necessarily talking about DC or Marvel, just an annoying trope I've seen). It's a trope I won't follow with my own superhero stories I hope to write.

For a while Marvel was way better on all fronts except TV shows but DC has stepped up their game. It's pretty even for me.

Out of the DC TV shows I have enjoyed Black Lightning, The Flash, Teen Titans and Star Girl. I used to watch DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow but no longer. I definitely don't like what they did with Naomi, boooooring. Batwoman I haven't tried yet so don't know if it would be good. Watchmen put me to sleep as well. I also don't know how good Superman & Lois is as I have never tried it.

I also want to one of these days give the game Guardians of the Galaxy which just came out a try, I've heard great things about it. :)

Speaking of Marvel TV shows, I tend to like almost every single TV show Marvel puts out, like 99% of the time. The only one I think I didn't like and didn't finish was Wandavision.

Oh and btw, @WanderingPurpleDragon, Loki was not received well by most people because of how weak he was in comparison to the female version of him in the show, a lot of people think that Disney is emasculating men and making them look weak by making women who are stronger than they are, but I mean, why? I don't get it again, I mean why can't there be stronger women, while there also are stronger men? It just doesn't make any sense. I guess a lot of men feel that if their best attribute, their physical strength, is taken away from them, then they have nothing left. This notion should not be one they should hold I believe.

Which is interesting because Loki is usually perceived as weaker in the movies to the superheroes as well as Thor (which is why he relies on his cunning to gain an upper hand). I think it makes sense that she was stronger because she had to fight for her survival since she was a child versus Loki. But yes, a lot of men probably do feel that it's a slap in the face...which moreso shows how fragile their perception of masculinity is.

Sometimes I think that women could actually in fact be the stronger sex, as opposed to men. I mean.... (and this is not going off topic because a lot of people are swearing off the new comics and movies that Marvel is now making for two reasons, 1) LGBTQ+ being more embraced in them and 2) emasculating of men supposedly that is going on) me and a friend were talking about this, men are sort of like very very very VERY hard substances that BREAK if enough force is applied, like the oak that snaps in the wind, while women are like willows who bend and twist with the wind, soft yet EXTREMELY malleable.

One of the reasons people say behind every successful man is a woman.... although for the sake of LGBTQ+ we will say that it can be behind every successful whomever is a someone.... because if you think about it, as far as allo relationships go anyway, women for the most part, rule the world, but they don't mind letting the man think "Oh I came up with that plan" or "Oh I did it all by myself!" if you catch my drift. Women even in tough times will not completely get bamboozled like men, they will say do whatever they have to do to survive, whether that be sleeping over at a friends place since they can't afford to pay rent and are looking for a place for a while during a rough patch in their lives, or for example they will be with a partner they hate but just tolerate him because he can provide for their kids.

Men CAN NOT do this, which is why me and my friend deduced in our minds, anyway, that must be why the suicide rate for men is 7-8 times higher than women. Women are driven by emotion while men thrive on respect and pride, if a man loses everything, he just doesn't want to live anymore, while a woman will find a way. If a man's image is ruined he would rather die most times than face the music, and I as a man know this all too well (I have attempted suicide more than once, thankfully unsuccessfully as my life is 1 BILLION times better today, I had to get through the dark times to get to the good times). And.... so.... in that way I think men are actually the weaker sex. At least emotionally and mentally. Men may be physically stronger for the most part, but hey, it is 2022 and personally I believe it is better to be a woman today than to be a man. There was a time when physical strength meant success, today, you can survive in this world without it.

Which is why, to this day, I've always asked myself, why oh why didn't God make me a woman? I mean I'm not gay (except for @alsjeblieft  ) and I'm not pondering being trans or changing my sex in any way, I love being me, but I still ALWAYS wish I was a woman, my life would be OH SO MUCH easier.

But... as they say.... if wishes were horses beggars would ride. Looks like I'm stuck with my joystick till death do us part! 🤣

I'm of the belief that there is no sex that is inherently stronger or weaker. However, I do think it's true that there are a lot of things that women are generally more likely to do in order to make it through difficult situations. And I think it has to do with how women have generally been brought up in society.

However, I do think that it depends on person to person. I know I'm glad that I've been born the way I am though there are a lot of things that are terrifying about it too which have made me wonder if it would be the same if I was born male instead. But I do think that things are slowly shifting for the better, as shown with these newer films and characters that are just as or even stronger than the male characters and having more representation in general.

Yeah, I mean did you see the uproar when they made Superman gay? It was ridiculous! Here is a pic from the comic issue in case you missed it lol.

I'm sure @alsjeblieft would wanna be with Superman now? I mean, am I right or am I right? 🤣

My point exactly, I'm chatting with a friend who is of the mind that what Disney is doing with Marvel is wrong, and his argument is you don't need to put men down to make women look better, but my argument is it is not putting men down, but rather it is simply empowering women, men are still strong, but personally I still feel like men feel threatened. Allos anyway. Threatened and insulted.

I agree. And I think that they show that people have varying strengths and ideas, which doesn't make any one person less valuable either. I mean, even though Captain Marvel is extremely powerful, Nick Fury and her best friend had a lot to offer as well.

Indeed.

But.... I'm going to play devil's advocate here.... let's give them the benefit of the doubt, Loki was kicked in the bollz like over 9000 times and you wouldn't say... make a male character should the roles be reversed punch a woman in the boobs over 9000 times, however, it still stands to reason that I think the people making these shows have pure intentions, they're just new at making strong women characters. Which is why the stories feel weak. They will get better at it. It's something has never been done before, and like anything that's never been done before it takes some polishing.

One thing I do agree with my friend on with, and this is worrying, the people writing these stories are leaving behind a formula, that is tried and tested, and has worked for generations, they are not looking to old comics, to put that "spark" into the shows and movies they are making. Rather, they are trying to re-invent the wheel if you will. Should they not change this, I do agree with him that things could go in the wrong direction. Personally I think this is the main issue, which is instead being identified as "the movie sucked because they put a gay character in the movie" or "because they put a really strong tom boyish girl in the movie" instead of looking at the ACTUAL problem which is more subtle that is in fact THE MOVIE SUCKED BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LEAVING BEHIND THE SOURCE MATERIAL!!!!!! WHICH HAS WORKED FROM TIME IMEMORIAL! I mean, if Stan Lee could see what is going on now!!! I bet he is rolling over in his grave at this point. They show the behind the scenes and they are like "Why does a character need to have any weaknesses?" and they even say things like "Why does there need to be a villain?". WTF is this shit???

Hard to say. I'm like a half assed comic book fan. I think mainly why I'm such a half assed fan is because what intrigues me about comics is how they're the modern day manifestation of what old world mythology was. They mainly play to everything that's engrossing about old world mythology. Stories of morality, good vs evil, battles for the fight junkies. It's fascinating to me that they serve the same function.

So, as for DC and Marvel, I'm not a die hard to either. I watch stuff in sprinkles and take my pick on what I like.

I can understand that, though I also don't fully agree with that. For one thing, male writers have been writing men getting kicked in the nads (for comedic purposes and otherwise) well before it happened to Loki. I do think that they will get better at writing these characters as time goes on though.

I'm always on the fence between source material and adaptations. Considering that a lot of these characters were made in different times, but the movies are being made now, I think it makes sense that the characters and stories would be updated. I do think that characters without weaknesses can make for weak writing. However, it seemed like Stan Lee enjoyed a lot of the adaptations so I'm unsure how he'd feel about the more recent ones.

One thing though, I think what the writers don't understand is that we want a strong man and a strong woman not a strong man and a strong woman without a pee pee. If ya get me. Basically they think that if they make super hero women like super hero men minus the member then they have made a strong woman. This is actually wrong. The qualities that make a woman a woman, should be left intact. Sure, give her laser vision, super strength, invisibility, what have you, but don't just super impose a man onto her, make her still be feminine, make her gentle, warm, intuitive, etc. I think this would be accepted more readily than say a female super hero who tries to be masculine. For example, look at Sarah Connor, bad ass mom, but still a woman. I don't think many would disagree she was tough, but she was still a woman for crying out loud.

Another point I'd like to raise is that in the interim while you were away I thought about it and figured out that basically I get why people were so mad about Superman turning gay. Some people are inclined to believe that being gay or anything on the spectrum is right, and they are entitled to their own beliefs, whether it be for religious reasons, or that they are just straight up homophobes but still these people, mostly allo people, some of them grew up with Superman as their idol, as their role model even, imagine how their lives were flipped upside down when the comic made him gay? That would be like someone forcing sex onto an ace. Totally wrong, well not literally - but it's along the same vein even though the example itself is a bit extreme.

So I mean instead of making Superman gay, what they could do is preserve what that hero represents for hundreds of millions around the world, while simultaneously embracing the LGBTQ+ community and creating a new hero that was just as powerful as Superman, maybe Superman's brother, or cousin, heck even his uncle, and say he was gay. That way we can have our cake and eat it too. Now I know this is still rather controversial because in being part of the spectrum you're allowed to change and morph as you see fit and change your title and sexuality as you like, but I mean, this is one way I think that we could make both camps happy, it isn't a perfect solution but it is a solution, one that would ruffle or rather would have ruffled way less feathers in it's implementation.
