StarryNightTogether
I've been adding anime series to my list to watch and I want to watch one of the Fullmetal Alchemist series. I'm not sure which one I should watch. Both series are 50+ episodes, so I don't want to watch the same story twice. Coming from people who have seen both series, which one do you recommend and why? Zagadka
They are both good, but I think most people would say Brotherhood. There were elements of the first one I preferred, but overall, the second has "more" and is more refined. Edit: and go subs. Some of the tone is totally different in dubs. argar
Brotherhood over the original. There is more character development in Brotherhood, as well as some new interesting characters, and some very intense scenes.
bad_apple
Definitely brotherhood. I'd say watch FA first and then Brotherhood in order to appreciate the differences, but not everyone has as much free time as me :3 The two answers above mine pretty much summarize my reasons. argar
Although truthfully at some point, which I don't remember exactly, the original and brotherhood go in completely different directions. I also feel, for some reason. that Brotherhood had more content.
Zagadka
Brotherhood definitely goes different directions, and on a more epic level, addressing character issues etc. I think I like some things from the original better because I generally dislike power creep and such, and Brotherhood gets... rather insane, but there is definitely more character development in Brotherhood. AceAnimeFan
I say watch both, but watch the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist first. If you only want to watch one then I say watch FMAB
Kurokuma
When I was younger I watched both thinking that brotherhood was a continuation of fma but later on i found out that fma came out before the manga finished and brotherhood follows the manga more accurately since it came out after it finished I think so I would recommend brotherhood. (Also I cant remember which one I liked since I watched them around the same time and it was years ago so im just recommending based on manga accuracy rather than preference)
Calliers
Watch both if you can, they're both good. I don't know, but it seems you're really into anime so you should be happy to watch both. Otherwise Brotherhood.
Epitaph
It's been a long time since I watched either but they're both honestly great in their own ways. I think brotherhood had more screentime than the first animated series, which lended more time to develop characters. It ends up spanning into more of an opra esque epic. The first series though, if I remember right has much darker tones and ends with more of a somber gut punch. I believe they made a follow up movie, but I never got a chance to watch it, so beyond that I know nothing.
denchikchyb
I really liked "The Alchemist of Steel.

FMA is it's own original story. Brotherhood is based off the manga. They both are identical at the beginning but then go different ways. WATCH BOTH But watch FMA FIRST! Then watch Brotherhood FMA has a much more emotional beginning, especially with a certain character and his dog and daughter. Because of this Brotherhood assumes you've seen FMA already or read the the manga and it condenses some very important and emotional parts into like one episode which I think was a bad idea. They are both WONDERFUL The similarities are for like ten or so episodes I think then they go their separate ways with a few similarities between them. The characters may have the same goal in both trust me, the stories are both REALLY good! There's also a movie that completes the first series called Conqueror of Shamballa. I've seen both series at least twice each. I highly urge you to watch both starting with the original FMA. Trust me you won't regret it!

But FMA develops a few characters that are rushed in Brotherhood. Which was really sad considering one character in FMA is a main character but hardly got any screentime in Brotherhood. Also because of how some of the villains are, both FMA and Brotherhood have completely different character development for them.
DuskFire
I've watched both of these series recently so my mind is very fresh on the details. I know everyone is recommending Brotherhood and I do as well, but watch FMA FIRST! I think one reason people may not appreciate the original is because it's story is quite different from the usual "big bad evil" that most stories like Brotherhood have.
