Young and asexual in a hyper-sexual society: a template analysis

We would like to invite you to take part in our research study. Before you decide, we would like you to understand why the research is being done and what it would involve for you. If you have any questions about the information provided, please contact the researcher Erin Surtees (u1950662@unimail.hud.ac.uk), or their supervisor Sarah Daly (s.daly@hud.ac.uk).

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of young asexual people who live in what has been referred to as a hyper-sexual society. There is a considerable amount of literature that has explored the impact of growing up in a pornified and hyper-sexualised culture (see Dines). Research has also explored the effects of porn and sexual media on young people’s sexual behaviours and attitudes. However, the existing literature has yet to explore the impact that porn and sexual media can have on young asexual individuals.

Can I take part?

You can take part if you are aged 18 to 25 and consider yourself to be asexual or identify as asexual.

What will the study involve?

There will be one face-to-face interview in which you will be asked a range of questions about your experiences with sexual content in the mass media, the internet, and pornography.

The time it may take to complete the interview may vary between participants, but the interviews could last around 30-60 minutes.

Are there any risks or benefits of taking part?

This study will involve participants discussing intimate details about their sexuality and sexual experiences. Therefore, there is the potential for previous traumatic or distressing experiences to be brought up within the conversation. Participants have to the right to stop the interview at any time and can refuse to answer a question if they choose to do so. Participants will also be provided with information to seek professional help and guidance in the debrief after the interview has concluded.

Do I have to take part and will my involvement with the study be kept confidential?

All of the data that you provide will be stored in confidential conditions. You will also be allocated a pseudonym to be used in place of your real name in the final report if you wish to use one. You will be able to withdraw from the study before or during the interview at any time. You will be able to withdraw your data from the study after completing the interview, but only up until the 01/02/22.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

The interview transcripts will be analysed using a template analysis to identify the main themes that arise within the interview. The results of this analysis will be discussed in my final report of my dissertation and the presentation of the study’s findings. Your identity will kept confidential throughout all reports of the results.

This study has been approved by the Project Team.
