I tried to listen to Biden's speech, but I can only take so much nationalistic, egoistic self-adulation before my eyes involuntarily roll back in my head.

I'm tired of politicians saying how flawless and perfect and world-renowned the US is. It's like, no, we're facing the same issues many other nations have faced or are currently facing. We're not the chosen ones blessed by God. We're not immune.

T-rump is dangling pardons for the Jan 6th insurrectionists if he’s reelected. Disgusting!

Yay to Mary Peltola beating rotten Sarah Palin for the Alaska house seat.

He didn't say any of that.  But there's a good reason he's sounding positive now:  to try to cheer people up so they'll vote in the mid-terms for non-rightwing candidates.  Progressives have been pretty depressed during the Trump years, many thinking there's no point anymore to voting.  If they don't, we are toast, because the DeSantises and Cruzes will take over.  Trump isn't really the problem anymore.

Mixed feelings on this one...

I feel like a person's rights should remain intact until they are convicted as a general rule, but for certain offenders I think there's a justification here to override that. For violent crime indictments (I include sexual offences in that) it makes sense, but not so much for the guy on his third strike for selling dope or who just shoplifted a lot.

An interesting legal defense strategy... I'm intrigued to see how much this prompts discussion in the courts

I think there are a couple of reasons the previous guy wants to run again. One is ego. Another is an attempt to avoid legal problems. I don't think it's going to turn out the way he wants.

Honestly though, it's been 2 years. I am all for being thorough and I get that there has been multiple investigations but seriously, how has he not been convicted of anything yet?

Honestly, I don’t think Trump wanted to run. I had the news on for part of the announcement and he was pretty pathetic. It didn’t look like he wanted to be there: it looked like he knew he had to be. Fox is not supporting DeSantis, and people are avoiding Trump on the right because he’s why they didn’t have a large red wave.
I think he’s just desperately trying to avoid being convicted of anything.

What else is he going to do?  By the time the investigators and prosecutors get through with the Trump Organization, that'll be gone and he'll need a venue in which to do his scamming.

So apparently the Colorado shooter identifies as non-binary. Anyone else questioning whether this may just be an attempt to avoid hate crime charges? Either way, they are a disgusting human being and will hopefully rot in prison for life.

An even more interesting and somewhat nsfw twist the shooter's family is somewhat famous. Dad was a pornstar who went by "Dick Delaware" and grandpa is a Jan 6th backer Republican from the California State Assembly.

Question for people who know US politics. My understanding is you need to be a resident of a state for 2 years to run for Senate. If Walker lives in GA BUT he is listed as a resident of Texas on his tax form, does he live in Texas? If so, how can he be running in GA?

Also, if you need to be born on US soil to run for Prez, how can Cruz run for the nomination?

Re Walker:   Here's what the Constitution says: Article 5, section 3 stated, “Every member of the Senate shall be . . . at the time of his election, a resident of the state from which he shall be chosen.”

So the question is whether Walker is actually a resident of Georgia.  I don't know how or by whom that can be determined.

Article 2 requires that anyone holding the presidency be born a citizen of the United States -- either born on US territory or, if born abroad, the child of at least one US citizen.  Thus Cruz would qualify (unfortunately).

Interesting, thanks Sally! I guess residence is difficult to determine as, I mean, technically if you own more than  one property and spend time in both them, where is that person a resident? To me, personally, if Walker filed for taxes last year in Texas, hes a Texas resident. Also, if I was  a GA resident, I might be peeved that someone wanting to represent my state does not pay taxes there. But again, thats just me.

Yeah, but that would logically pit him against Cancun Fled Cruz, and that's not allowed. So, he drank the GOP and became an American God sittiong on the Right Hand of Emperor Trump the Orange.

Probably depends on the definition of residency in the states in question. I'm guessing he's legally a resident of Georgia because of his main living address and filing taxes in Texas for a different reason. Paying taxes in Texas may just mean he owns taxable property or runs a business there. It's similar to someone living on the Texas side of the Oklahoma-Texas border and working across the border in Oklahoma. They'd be taxed on wages as though they lived in Oklahoma even though they legally reside in Texas, but they'd pay Texas property taxes as well.

Makes sense. I guess to me it's just odd because like, to me, if you pay taxes in a state and own property in that state, that should be your state?

In 1992, Joe Biden was one of only 6 senators who voted in favor of railroad workers. Now that a labor strike would embarrass him as president, he's switched sides. It doesn't have to be this way. He could make the railroads accept the labor demands, yet instead he is siding with big business. While it's true that a strike would damage the economy, losing the right to strike is making people quit. That short term desire to stop a strike at all costs will make things worse in the long run. See the source image
