Mine were from very close to there, a tiny village a little more to the south, closer to Timisoara. My grandparents and mom and aunt have actually gone back and found some cousins who still live there (and some who lived there during Communist rule and moved to Germany when the wall fell). Actually later one of their kids came to visit the states and I met her. I've seen pictures of the Romanian village and it's funny that it looks almost identical to the towns and areas in North Dakota they moved to.

Daaang, the parallels get crazier. I tracked down and got in touch with a couple of distant cousins too -- literally found them in the German white pages and banked on the fact that they had a very unusual surname. Thankfully, they embraced the connection! My dad and I were able to visit them when we went on a business trip to Munich a couple of years back, and they had so many stories of living through the batshit insanity of Ceaușescu's reign, and similarly only managed to flee to Germany around 1990-91.

(Hahaha, I hope we're not hijacking the thread too much! Just so cool to encounter someone with the same background. I almost never hear Danube Swabians mentioned, they're such a weird little niche footnote in Europe's history.)

(Dutch)

I can just about work out what this says. Dutch and northern Germanic languages like Danish/Norwegian have a lot of similarities 😊

Well this explains why I struggled so much communicating with the locals in my basic German when I backpacked through that part of the world! 🤣

😅 yep! As I told you my dialect is very strong and far away from Standard German. Though sensible people (like me😝) would talk to you in Standard German if they notice you're not from there

We actually have a lengthy recording of my great-grandmother being interviewed by one of our cousins in 1965, just two years before she died. She mostly speaks in Swabian German with some broken English interspersed, and even sings the Hungarian national anthem. I'd love to be able to have it translated sometime.

D'you know what? That sounds really interesting and I'd love to give it a go. PM me if you're interested.

It's one of the things I love about language! I started out learning Dutch so when I began Norwegian earlier this year it all came so naturally! I'd also suggest checking out old English videos on YouTube, as soon as you speak just one other Germanic language it becomes uncanny how familiar yet distant it sounds.

I’ve noticed exactly the same with Latin based languages as well. Like with fluent Spanish and a tiny bit of Romanian knowledge I can understand quite a lot when it’s written. I’m sure it’s the same the other way round too 😊

I've noticed that when you know the rules of how things are pronounced (or hear it) than yes they become quite intelligible which is super fun!
