It's already over like, 50,000 words long though and that's just the first rough draft with fill-in chapters that still need to be written (to join scenes together and expand on events and stuff). It got away with me and now I'm feeling really overwhelmed, but I want to start writing properly eventually (I have already had non-fiction published - articles mostly, but I mean like an actual creative work from my own mind) and I figure this is good practice for the story-building process and the discipline it takes and things. I decided to aim to publish it on Ao3 rather than any of the other fanfic sites just because it's very violent and sexually graphic, with a lot of body horror etc, so it needs to be somewhere that will allow for those things without removing it!! Yes there are very advanced filters so you can remove all explicit and sexual tags etc, I have the opposite experience in that soooo much of it is young adult and very tame (maybe a kiss or two, lol), so I have to use the filter to find the explicit stuff aimed at adults (which often older people are writing so the story is aimed more at adults rather than teens and young adults, even if I skip the sex stuff I can usually get more out of the story) Link to post Share on other sites

Maybe there's some kind of filter? AO3 has an amazing tag and filter system. It is very easy to not find any explicit fics at all if the authors have rated and tagged it in the right way. Avoid everything rated M and E, and you should be fine . Though fics rated M don't necessarily always have sexual content, but are rather rated that way because it discusses "mature" topics. Your safest bet will be T and G, and don't click on anything tagged with pwp... 😛 Link to post Share on other sites

I have been following their series on Enola Holmes and am glad to see that at least someone thinks like me and likes to emphasize (perhaps over-emphasize) sibling relationships! I can't stand explicit sexual content, and generally dislike how 99% of fanfiction is filled with stories about characters hooking up in all possible ways. I mostly wrote about characters from whatever I was reading/watching at the time just hanging out and sometimes making references to their franchises. It didn't occur to me until years later that people mostly used it to have characters "hook up" (among other things). Fics filtered under the category "Gen" shouldn't have (too much) shipping in them. And if properly tagged, X/X usually indicates relationships, whereas X&X is reserved for friendships You also need a bit of luck. I've read some great fics that were tagged with a certain ship, but turned out to be proper novel length thrillers/dramas, where in the end the relationship was pretty much on the back burner Link to post Share on other sites

If anyone read it they would judge me heavily and/or be scarred in the process. Given the nature of it, I'm amazed that I get the occasional 'kudos' and comment on there from people who love it... it is well written and has good dark humor, but uh... that darkness. lol.
