Sex scenes ruin books for me

I stared listening to a book recently and it was great. Then forty pages in the main characters had sexual relations. They did this to show how deeply they loved each other. When I started hearing this part my stomach dropped and i felt cold and hot inside. I wish that I wasn't at the age where authors seem to think that every book should have sex.

As a reader and writer, forty pages in is...pretty rushed, honestly. I agree with you: I don't think every story should have sex. It's a stigmatization that needs to be burned. I'm sexual, and I don't really like sex scenes in books, mostly because they're written in such a cringe-y way.

When I read a book, I find that characters loving each deeply is better translated in the subtle connections, not in the bedroom.

I've been skipping over sex scenes in books for years, and I always thought the same thing - they were just too boring. Nothing meaningful happens while they're getting it on. (I guess I should have managed to figured out I was ace ages ago 🙄)

I know you're talking about books here, but sex-scenes ruin most movies for me too. More than sex scenes in books actually.  😅

I always skip those scenes because I find them somewhat disgusting. I'm not anti-sex though, I just don't wanna watch people having sex.

Sex scenes ruin everything. Can't even watch TV or movies anymore.

When a book is not even related to any romantic plot or themes, what’s the point of shoehorning sex anyway.

It is better than when the main character has sex for no reason. The book I'm reading now is full of that. Male and female character = sex. It is annoying.

I go through phases of being squicked out by sex scenes and then phases of being able to handle them. I tend to read a lot of paranormal romance so obviously the genre is rife with sex scenes. For the most part, I can get through them so long as they aren't overtly explicit or full of metaphors for genitalia (which in general make me cringe). Though, you said "listened" to a book... and I must say I do not think I could handle listening to someone reading out a sex scene.

Sexual content is part of reason I don't watch Rated R or TV-MA content. I can read sex scenes, but I cannot watch them.

I used to come across sex scenes all over the place when I read fanfiction more often. At a certain point, I got tired of every story that even came close to being what I was looking for always turning into written porn. It. Was. So. Boring.

I wish there was a warning on the inside cover or something so people aren't taken by surprise; we put warning labels on CD covers when there's cursing or whatever but we cant do the same for sex scenes in books/movies/TV!? Yes there's the rating system but that doesn't indicate the presence of a sex scene.

Slightly off topic, but I've seen sex scenes in novels and in manga and I can't decide which is worse; on one hand you have pictures but no detailed descriptions and on the other you have some pretty explicit descriptions but no pictures. Both cause me to feel sick as well as experience a fight or flight type of response. There really needs to be a warning!

As far as unexpected sex in movies and TV though, the mute button is my best friend - I mute it and look away.

I'm happy that I learned to scan over the pages and get a basic idea what's going on without reading it word for word,  so I quickly glance past the annoying parts and pick up the story from there. very rarely is there anything relevant to the plot except knowing that those characters just got this close. It's like fast forwarding to the next scene (yea, this was a VHS reference)

Yeah, I agree with you. I have a hard time even with kissing in movies- it always just feels icky to me.

Same, I always sit there, sighing in annoyance and think "Why?!"

Explicit sex scenes bother me more than kissing scenes actually, but I still don't know why there can't be any show or movie without any of it...

Yeah, in fanfic it sometimes comes pretty unexpected and out of nowhere...
