Let's build long-lasting friendships!

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit of an introvert so I haven't had much luck befriending people on AVEN outside of local meet ups and since the vast majority of us will be stuck indoors for the foreseeable future due to CORVID-19, I thought it might be nice to get to know each other as individuals and maybe build some new friendships.

I figure the way we could do this is by introducing ourselves with some info about our interests and hopefully we can spark a few conversations on this post or in our DMs. Feel free to include as much (or as little) as you are comfortable with.

I'll go first...

Age: 24

Hobbies and interests: drawing and making crafts, video games, biology, manga and anime, musicals, watching excessively long video essays on Youtube

Favourite foods: pretty much anything Japanese

Favourite animal/plant: Cats!

Favourite shows, movies, books, video games etc: Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Star Trek TOS, Steven Universe, Hannibal, The Good Place, Train to Busan

Currently watching/reading: Brooklyn 99

What do you value in friendships? Communication, honesty, a willingness to discuss differences and consider other perspectives.

I look forward to seeing if we can start any new friendships!

Wow I'm really glad to see some posts! It seems quite a lot of us like anime and manga which is cool. Maybe we can recommend each other some stuff?

@Ciki Age is not a problem! Also, your profile image is cute! Are you busy with school at the moment? What do you enjoy most about it?

@Strupp Welcome to AVEN, have some cake 🎂. It's cool to see another artist here, maybe we can chat about art sometime.

You say you are doing a Bachelor's degree, what are you studying? Has your dissertation been enjoyable?

@Arodash You say you like History, do you have any interesting History facts to share? What kind of anime and manga do you like?

@ArodashHave you tried watching No Guns Life? It's a sci-fi anime and manga where the main character is a cyborg with a gun for a head. I've heard good things about it.

@Ciki thank you, glad to be here! Will do so :)

@Kuraara Thanks, yes, but it's just a hobby, so I'm not that good tbh, but sure, I would love to talk about art and stuff like that, what medium do you use for drawing?
I'm studying aerospace engineering, and somehow I like my subject, but the help of my supervisor is not so great, and I really procrastinate a lot.Because of Corona, we just got an extension of the deadline, and that robbed me of my motivation, so I've done zero work in the last two weeks.
Are you a university student as well?

@Strupp I'm still learning drawing too, there are a lot of areas I'm still very weak in. I tend to draw digitally using Procreate on my Ipad. But I like to sketch traditionally, and I would like to do some more traditional medium stuff in the future. What about you?

Your subject sounds interesting! Right now I'm doing a Masters in Science Communication but I studied Biology specialising in animal behaviour for my undergraduate degree. I had problems with my dissertation too, I did my dissertation during the university strikes so I only got to meet up with my supervisor like twice in the whole semester.

I went to school for an associates in applied fire sciences

I haven't heard of that before, what does that involve?

I've been feeling extra lonely lately being cooped up inside so this seems like a fun one to join.

Age: 22

Hobbies and interests: I like art (mostly painting but I also draw, do some digital work and art journaling), I enjoy science (mostly biology-based but I like to fall asleep to random science documentaries), and I'm currently relearning how to rollerblade.

Favourite food: I will literally eat anything (as long as it's not jello). My friends call me garbage disposal lol.

Favourite plant/ animal: I have 4 pothos plants in my room so it would have to be them. As far as animals go it's a toss up between any type of parrots and goats.

Favourite shows, movies, books, video games etc.: I loved the House series, but I usually get bored with shows before I finish them. I love books with a good science element to them so I'm currently working my way through all the books written by Michael Crichton.

Currently watching/ reading: I will go on really in-depth YouTube tangents and get really involved with that. Currently it's tiny houses, but I've always loved them.

What do you value in a friendship? I like people who are easy going, make me laugh, are understanding, and make me want to try new things and get our of my comfort zone.

I would love to actually start interacting with people on here because I usually suck at initiating anything.

Its for firefighters it delves into more logistical stuff like building construction, more explained fire behavior, chemistry, fire investigation, code enforcement, fire prevention. It opens many doors into other fire related jobs than just being a response firefighter

Oh wow that's super interesting and practical! I knew firefighters often act as basically specialised detectives but I didn't know they did degrees covering the skills involved. Was there anything about the experience that particularly stood out to you?

Fire prevention and protection did. Alarm systems, sprinklers all that stuff. And actually the degree is.... kind of useless it doesnt get you any certifications which are required, like fire inspector 1 and 2.

The only thing it CAN but doesnt always get you is, the baseline NFPA requirment in the US to be a firefighter, Firefighter 1 and 2 which I took seperatley while I went to college

So I'm guessing you are aiming to become a firefighter then? What made you choose that career?

I love Cosmos, but I might be a little biased because Neil deGrasse Tyson is my favorite human. @Kuraara do you like to mix science with your art, or do you keep them separate?

I do a bit of both. I like to draw for fun but I've also done a few science illustrations. I'm currently doing a science communication Masters I want to do a science comic for my dissertation and I'd like to continue doing sciencey art in the future. :)

@Kuraara I am just doing traditional stuff tried nearly every technique, but I've got a drawing tablet and am keen to try it again :D
Is there a way you would describe your art style?

Thanks, yours too! What are you aiming to do after graduation? What was your diss on?
Oh damn and I thought mine would be bad, but the main thing is you passed! Btw Is your Username an innuendo of curare?

@xxLAURxx Are you studying biology as well? And tiny houses are the best! they always look so cute

That's awesome!! I'm in my final semester of a Biology degree but I decided to stick back a year and persue a visual art minor. I took a science communication class this semester and one of my classmates did something similar to a comic for their final project. I chose to do an interactive website, but there are so many aspects of audience and purpose you have to consider that I never really thought about.

Yes, I was originally in biomedical sciences but switched to biology in my second year because I wanted more freedom in the classes I could take. Some of the tiny houses are amazing and comparable to an actual apartment. Watching videos on alternative living makes me never want to own a home (the idea was never that appealing to me in the first place lol)

I feel like I haven't really developed a consistent art style yet. You can check out some of my stuff on Instagram, my handle is @clamdraws

After graduation I'm planning on getting a science communication job in my city and then figuring out where to go from there. My undergrad dissertation was about the foraging behaviour of male rufous hummingbirds. I was looking to see if they exhibited some obscure behaviour known as peak shift (I won't get into it unless you are interested, it takes quite a bit of explanation).

My username comes from my irl first name! Kuraara is basically how Clara would be pronounced in Japanese!

Yeah science communication is surprisingly difficult, but I've been enjoying the experience so far.

I'm glad to hear that! Science communication wasn't really a path I had thought much about before, but it seems like a really interesting and fulfilling way to go. Are you a naturally outgoing person, or do you find it difficult to approach people about your research etc.?

Did anything particularly interesting come from your research? I work part-time in an ornithology lab on campus (we mostly do research around sound analysis) but ever since I took the ornithology class I have been interested in birds. There's only one species of hummingbird around where I live but I was privileged to see quite the array when I did a study abroad course in Costa Rica last year.

I'm kind of introverted, I get especially anxious around strangers so sometimes doing science communication work can be a challenge. I found creating a sort of professional persona to adopt helps reduce some of that anxiety, but I'm still learning.

Unfortunately, my results were basically all non-significant. I think one of the issues was I was trying to look for a behaviour that has very rarely been looked at in the wild, it's commonly only seen under very specific conditions in a laboratory setting. I would recommend looking up some research into Rufous hummingbirds though. There has been a lot of study into the spacial awareness of males.

Who says no to making new friends?

Age: 23

Hobbies and interests: I love to crochet and I do all kinds of crafts. I love plants and pets and animals in general. I play some video games here and there (recently every day), and I'm always watching something on Youtube or Netflix. I like being outdoors but I am in constant battle with the bugs. I am also getting really into cooking.

Favourite foods: I love lots of foods but right now I just really want some beef and broccoli.

Favourite animal: I'm a cat person but I love most pets. I currently have a hamster and I would love to have a goat or goats one day. I also like sharks, sea otters, and birds.

Favourite plant: Of the plants I have, my prayer plant is my favourite. Just a wonderful and beautiful little plant.

Favourite shows: Greys anatomy is like the only one that I can say without a doubt I love, I have a lot of other favourites but they are not unconditional love.

Favourite movies: I am not a huge movie person but I like horror movies.

Favourite video games: Right now I am playing a lot of Hearthstone and Minecraft

Currently watching/reading: I am currently in between shows and books.

@Zeddie My roommate during uni got me to watch a bunch of starkid musicals, they were really fun! Do you have any favourites? I probably enjoyed Twisted the most.

Also cheese is amazing, where would we be without cheese to flavour own meals.

@McKayla Hi fellow cat person! I enjoy crafts too, I've done some knitting and crocheting, but I'd like to try bookbinding at some point. What kinds of horror movies do you like? I tend to steer away from overly gory stuff, but I'm a big fan of psychological and cosmic horror.

Link to post

@Kuraara Twisted is definely my favourite as well but I also love Starship and the guy who didnt like musicals. I got into them as being a Harry Potter fan I found the Potter musicals and then made my way though the rest they had done at that point. Never really got into MAMD (for obvious reasons didnt really get it) and not the biggest fan of firebringer or black friday either.

Cheese is the best, I eat way to much of it, one of the sad things of discovering when I went to uni is how much it costs
