Just Somebody
I came across this video other night: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qStTIX86mhE What did you or the people you interacted with expected of the present? What surprised you? What sociocultural, technological, scientifical, philosophical and artistical changes came true? What do you wish to come true?
Homer
I think it's just as important to look at the stuff that didn't come true.
Ailepho
36 minutes ago, Homer said: I think it's just as important to look at the stuff that didn't come true. That’s an interesting thought! One of the things I like to think about is how my life would’ve been impacted if A hadn’t happened and, instead, B did.
daveb
Or the things that weren't predicted but did make a big impact. I think people tend to extrapolate from the present, from what we know and are familiar with, which makes sense but can miss out on some of the bigger changes. Looking back to my childhood, for example, predictions of the future extrapolated things like car culture to people driving flying cars as part of their everyday lives like ground cars are currently. In reality we're still driving ground cars, but more of them are electric. And maybe autonomous cars will become the norm some day (my guess is it would happen before flying cars became as ubiquitous as they were in futures past). I think one of the biggest changes that few people predicted, if any, is the rise of smartphones and the internet and all of the impacts coming out of those.

the great acescape
I was watching a Robin Williams interview as part of the Blank on Blank series and he offered some tongue-in-cheek predictions on the state of the entertainment industry in 2020 that weren't that far off the mark (everything being absorbed under a giant corporate megalith a la Disney, etc etc) At the beginning of the video there was a really heartbreaking moment where the interviewer said, "In the year 2020, you'll be 70 years old." Robin Williams and I both said "oh, god" simultaneously.
