Well, I'll start a petition to burn Twitter. It appears people are not allowed.

Possibly the same as everywhere else: idiots with only half a brain cell between them using social media to be vile because they can get away with it. I bet most of them will be very friendly to your face should you meet them in person. The web is full of people like this.

Thanks for the warning to those who may need and use shitter, sorry meant 'twitter'.

I'm not on shitter and I view all social media, faecesbook included as big big steaming piles of poo.

That said, social media has a lot of losers who are just looking to cause trouble like you have said and whatever orientation, race, age or religion you are, it's always worth just ignoring these losers.

I’d heard about this a little while back, I’m disappointed (but not surprised) to see it’s still going on.

There's no numbers floating around, but many many screenshots of these abuse, none of which I can show because it's triggering.

AVEN members that use Twitter,

There has been an ongoing trend on Twitter involving adding known asexuals to group chats to harass, threaten, and abuse them. If this happens to you, please leave the chat, report the Twitter accounts involved, and block everyone involved. Do not react by attacking these members including insults, as asexuals have gotten in trouble with Twitter this way. If possible, choose account settings on Twitter to not allow people you don't follow to "@" you and not allow people who aren't your Twitter friends to add you to group chats or PM you.

As always, please be careful on all social media, as this is not limited to Twitter, just Twitter settings make it easier to attack asexuals in this way.

AVEN admod team.

That figures. So many people out there are out to get us. I don't blame aces for fighting back.

I chose to quit Twitter...so many reasons 🙄 Lindy West writes about the animosity and intolerance (not to mention neo-Nazism) Twitter is too afraid to take a firm stance against far more eloquently than I ever could....

It's weird to me, this world that I almost don't know exists. I've never found social media to be particularly toxic, and I do use it. Just not... I dunno. Not in a way that I've ever encountered many problems? People talk about Twitter and Facebook and Instagram and Tumblr and all that being rubbish, and I'm like, what are you getting yourself involved in?! I don't post much on Facebook. I used to participate in a lot of groups there but don't anymore, and they were never a problem. Twitter, I follow friends and news outlets and organisations that interest me and random silly shit. I've never become emotionally distressed by Twitter in my life. Instagram, I post photographs I take and share random life stuff as captions. Everyday shit, not some sort of glamorous-looking perfect life. Tumblr... never really used it much but I did have an account for a photographic project once. What are people doing on social media that makes it so terrible? Sounds like everyone makes it way too big a part of their lives -- and this is coming from someone who spends a lot of time online.

Anyway. Tad off-topic. I'm sorry for whatever is happening with harassing asexuals on Twitter. Not cool, obviously.

@CBC It sounds like you've just managed to avoid the drama, but my impression has been that there's quite a bit of it on sites like those. What I've come to understand about the internet is that there are people who think it's fun to start shit online, so I don't take anything that seriously.

Hmm...I'm wondering whether it might have to do with the fact that, in recent years, social media has given others the ability to block and report users who harass them, delete their harassing comments, etc.

Years ago, some news sites, like MSN, informed users/readers that they would no longer have a comment section (due to all of the arguments, harassing comments, etc.) But all of those same comments and drama still occurs on AOL and Yahoo news articles' comments' sections (no matter the topic, someone or others would always say something negative about Obama/blame him and other democratic politicians for why the country's current employment rate/housing market/stock market, etc. wasn't doing well, even when he was no longer the president; democratic voters; and/or Millenials, and then masses of other commenters would join in in verbally bashing them).

Basically, from what I've seen, any news/topic about LGBT+ people, climate change, the women's march, Black Lives Matter, race, terrorism, politics, sexual harassment (i.e. the #MeToo movement), etc. is where I've seen those arguments/comments the most. But, I've even seen them on other forums and news articles that don't have anything to do with these topics, like writing forums, for example (where older members would enjoy bantering with each others about Millenials, democratic voters/politicians, etc. causing all of the world's/society's problems).

I always kind of wondered where Millenials/democratic voters were during all of the bashing comments, since I didn't see or come across too many who'd point out that they didn't like what others were saying.

Since it is off-topic, put it in spoiler for easier scroll-by:

Spoiler

One factor may be whether you have a private profile or not. I'm only on facebook and twitter, so I don't know about the other platforms. But on facebook you can choose to not be searchable or contactable for anyone in the whole wide world. I used to only make myself seachable for a day or two when I just had agreed with a friend that they would add me on facebook.

I also nearly never forward or like any stuff that I know is shown to a zillion users around the globe. I don't share unless it's really really unique and meaningful and clearly not meant to just fish for likes and shares. I delete ads that show up on my timeline. I don't log in to other sites using my facebook account, and I don't use facebook-like-buttons on other sites. And my profile information is kept to a minimum, not even my job or education can be found there.

I guess, if one wanders about facebook, clicking here and there with just binary good/bad in their minds, then it will open up for facebook bringing stuff to you - and through you to your friends and friends' friends - that goes viral. And since humans have a thing for scandals and stuff, bad things seldom fail to go viral. And clicking around thoughtlessly also is what actually makes things go viral. Good = share, bad = share with outraged comment. That is so meaningless. Yes, I guess, people are taking silly stuff from strangers to seriously.

Likely. And I literally never involve myself in those, so. Not because I don't have opinions; because it seems like a waste of my time. I read almost none of it and never post about such things myself.

I save all my internet arguing for AVEN, I guess. 😂

My Twitter is public. I'm probably easily searchable on Facebook if anyone knows my surname because it's quite uncommon. I don't imagine that's the issue; it's probably more that I don't use social media to engage with serious issues.

Antisocial media...

17He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

18As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

19So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

20Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.

21As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

22The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

23Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

24He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

25When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

27Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

28A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

For Twitter specifically, Twitter users would add known asexual accounts to group chats or "@" them and threaten them, harass them, show them pictures of porn, etc. I have heard of asexual Tumblr blogs having similar issues. They open up their blog to submissions, and people fill it with porn, and they have to close submissions.  I think the main threat for any social media is when you open yourself up to outsiders. My Twitter doesn't mention asexuality once. I'm not worried about it. My Tumblr is open to outside submissions and asks. That'll probably get some heat when I hit a reasonable number of followers to be on the aphobes' radar (right now I only have 2 followers :( ).

Spoke about this with Admins, and another concern is privacy. We can blur out names and avatars, but that only goes so far. Our intent isn't to send mobs after these people, Our intent is to tell you guys to stay safe. :) And, just take my word for it. I brought it up after seeing it because if I wasn't in a good place when I saw what people were saying it'd have been triggering for me. :( Take that as you will.

I use Twitter but I try to not disclose that I'm asexual there. On Reddit, it's different story, tho.

Weird. I mean, people can be gross and abusive, so I guess it's not terribly surprising, but Christ. It's probably 90% teenage and 20-something guys who can't get laid because they're creepy jerks.
